One of my favourite things about this time of year in Korea is the cherry blossoms. I love spending time at 여의도한강공원 just walking around seeing all the beautiful flowers and trees in bloom. Yeouido is perhaps the best, but also most crowded place in Seoul to see not just cherry blossoms but also azaleas, forsythia, and other spring flowers. With 1,400 to 1,600 trees in the park, you're guaranteed a stunning and dramatic viewing.

Typically cherry blossoms in Korea come out from mid March until early April. They start in the south on Jeju Island and slowly work their way up towards Seoul by early April. For Koreans, Cherry Blossoms are often seen as a symbol of purity and beauty. They have also been used in Korean pop culture (such as K-dramas) to represent true love.

When you think of busking in Seoul there is one place that comes to mind straight away. Hongdae performance culture is truly something you must experience at least once in your life. The passion they put into their art is shown in their performance, you can see them pouring their heart and soul into each and every show. Street performers can be seen showcasing different kinds of music like self-composed music, k-pop, hip-hop, jazz and more. You may even see some performers doing more traditional art such as Korean traditional music, samulnori or pansori. Performance-based art is also popular such as magic tricks, mime, bubble arts and probably the most popular being dancing. Many buskers also live stream their performances on social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube for their foreign fans to watch online.

Personally, I like to spend every night I'm free going down to cheer on and support the local artists who perform in Hongdae. As someone who has a passion for all things in the arts, I admire these performers and their dedication to entertaining and connecting with their audience. The fan service is like nothing else I've seen or experienced in any other street performance. If you get lucky you might even see celebrities performing in pop-up/surprise concerts!

One thing that's not hard to find in South Korea is delicious food, and street food has traditionally been seen as a part of popular culture in South Korea. No matter where you are there is sure to be a 아줌마 (auntie) or 아저씨 (uncle), always cooking some local cuisine nearby at their food stall on the street or in the alleyways. One of my favourite street foods is a dish called 떡볶이 which is rice cake that’s usually cooked in a sweet but spicy sauce. Another favourite of mine, whenever I'm in a hurry and need to eat something on the go is 김밥, which is like a rice roll (foreigners often mistake it for sushi, but it's not). You can also often find foods like 오뎅 which is fish cake, or 붕어빵 which is like bread (shaped like a fish) often filled with red bean paste, you can get cream and other toppings too, yum! There are so many more foods to list but I'll leave that for another time and I'll let you do some discovering of your own!

Do you have a favourite Korean street food? Leave your recommendations in the comments!

Positioned in the centre of COEX Mall in Gangnam, Starfield Library (별마당도서관) is a public space where anyone can come to sit down, chill out and loose themselves in all kinds of books. Personally, I love to hang out here and relax, grab myself a coffee, find a space to occupy, put my headphones on and write in my travel diary. Also, I was lucky enough to bring my best friend Milos with me on one of my trips and got to show him this beautiful space!

The library has 13-meter-tall bookshelves with more than 70,000 books ranging from literature to hobbies as well as over 400 types of magazines. All kinds of events are held here, such as book-themed cultural events from author talks and poetry readings, to lectures and literary concerts.

Visiting the Starfield Library during the day and at night offers two very different experiences. During the day the natural light flows in breathing life and energy into the space. Of a night the ambience is more mellow and soothing, letting you know the day is over and it's time to sleep.

Welcome, to my new South Korea travel page!

Allow me to introduce myself, 안녕하세요 my name is PJ and this is my page dedicated to all things Korea. My love for Korea started roughly six years ago when I took my first trip to Seoul. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to explain this well enough but arriving there felt like finally coming home, it was that feeling of belonging and finding my place i'm most at peace. When I’m in Korea it’s like I’m granted permission to be 100% my authentic self, no pretending, no hiding, just me. That feeling is what has kept me coming back year after year.

I decided to make this page to share with you my experiences, stories, recommendations, travel ideas, photos, favourite restaurants and more. So, if you have any questions about Korea, you hope to travel there one day or just love it as much as I do, follow me on all my socials and let’s explore South Korea together!
