⊙ Lack of Safety Awareness Causes Tragic Accidents
Recently, news of people who passed away or were injured due to lack of safety accidents has been constantly heard, and views about safety awareness have resurfaced.

On October 15th, a worker of an SPC Group-affiliated bread factory in Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do died as she got trapped in a sauce mixing machine.

On another day, October 26th, at around 6 P.M., a burial accident occurred at the first shaft of the zinc mine in Bonghwa, Jaesan-myeon, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

At 10:15 P.M. on October 29th, a massive casualty accident occurred at an alley near the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, killing 156 people and injuring 195 people.

Why can our society not prevent repeated safety accidents? Accidents occur repeatedly even though prevention of recurrence has been kept mentioned. Korea is not a safe society yet.

In No.454, the Dongguk Post will take a closer look at a system in which foreign universities with student exchange agreements are dispatched for one or two semesters to continue their studies, and learn the language and culture of the other country. Through the exchange student system, students can also receive credits at their school, allowing them to enjoy life in other countries. While they are dispatched as exchange students, students pay tuition to their school, and listen to classes at the other school where they are sent and live in the same status as students at the other school. Before entering the college, everyone might have dreamed of becoming an exchange student at least once. Since face-to-face classes have resumed, students were able to see many foreigners at school. ⊙Citizens Are Suffering From Price Rise

When going out, people will be able to feel that the cost of various things has risen sharply compared to before. Consumer prices, which have recently risen sharply, are burdening citizens. The World Bank says soaring food and energy prices will continue for more than three years, bringing a crisis to households.

According to a report by Statistics Korea on April 29th, 2022, Korea’s consumer prices rose 4.8 percent in April compared to the same month last year. The global pandemic of COVID-19 has shrunk the economy and caused prices to rise. Also, the war between Russia and Ukraine has affected inflation. As a result, prices of food materials, including cooking oil and flour, and energy resources have risen significantly.

After COVID-19 has swept across South Korea and the world, the gap in habits between people is deepening. “A gap in habits” means a gap between people who are holding so-called “good habits” which help make their life healthier and more productive and people who are holding so-called “bad habits” which lead them to be more unproductive. This gap in habits has been deepening during the COVID-19 situation, and it will make a big difference in living the post-COVID-19 life.

The Dongguk Post conducted a survey about habits of Dongguk University students, and there are some questions about their habits such as “Do you have regular habits or unregular habits?” or “Which habits do you currently have?”.

There were some people who had maintained “bad habits” and keep feeling lethargic, and people who had been living their life with developmental habits. “Corona-blue,” the name for depression during COVID-19, has occurred especially into teenagers and college students. This “Corona-blue” has also affected the Dongguk University students who are living through the COVID-19 situation. On the other hand, some people established the habits for self-improvement and improved themselves during the same COVID-19 situation.

Also, the reason we keep maintaining our “bad habits” and the ways we make our habits better are important. There are no absolute answers to the habits. It would be best if you look back on your current habits by categorizing which ones are resulting in positive effects and which ones are causing negative effects and sustain the positive habits or get rid of the negative habits.

⊙Buddha’s Birthday Event Held Two Years After COVID-19

Dongguk University held various Buddha’s Birthday events this year, which could not be held before due to COVID-19. Many students had no time to come to school as the classes were switched to non-face-to-face, and the event ended with regret due to many restrictions according to situations.

In April, the lotus lantern festival and light beacon hanging event were held and many students participated. Also, the Bongchuk lighting ceremony was held to commemorate Buddha’s birthday and club OPUS attended to play the piano and classical quartet.

On February 22nd, the 2022 entrance ceremony was held both online and offline at the same time under the slogan “Separately But Also Together” to celebrate the admission of over 3,000 first-year students. It was a much-awaited offline entrance ceremony that had not been held for the last two years. Someone graced the ceremony as an alumnus of Dongguk University. She is Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) announcer Lee Jung-min, a class of 1999 of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, and the longest-ever female anchor of “KBS News Plaza,” the longest morning news program of KBS.
