🍂THE KAIST HERALD NOVEMBER ISSUE IS OUT NOW!🍂

For our News Spotlight, KAIST was named Korea’s most outstanding university in the 2025 INUE–Korea Economic Daily University Evaluation, reflecting strong public confidence across generations. Undergraduate early applications reached 6,991 for a fourth straight increase, while graduate applications have grown ~9.5% annually over four years, with international applications up 193%.

For this month’s Feature, “How the World Continues Its Fight Against Cancer,” we examine early signs and prevention, groups most at risk, global awareness efforts, and innovations reshaping treatment.

On September 16, KAIST’s College of Engineering signed a memorandum of understanding with National Instruments (NI) and received 600 software licenses valued at 2.7 billion KRW. Experts and engineers from NI’s headquarters and Korean branch showcased NI tools in high-speed aerodynamics, LEO satellite communications, and computational guidance for reusable launch vehicles. KAIST and NI plan to strengthen cooperation through industry-academia partnerships, joint R&D projects, and professional manpower training.

🎃THE KAIST HERALD OCTOBER ISSUE IS OUT NOW!🎃

The October issue brings campus updates and a wide range of stories from across the world.

First, KAIST has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with National Instruments (NI) and received 600 software licenses, valued at around 2.7 billion KRW. The tools are expected to support work in areas such as high-speed aerodynamics, low Earth orbit satellite communications, and computational guidance for reusable launch vehicles.

On the other hand, Professor Jin-Soo Kim donated 85,000 ToolGen shares (approximately 3.4 billion KRW) to launch a plant-based carbon capture center. Set to open in late 2025, the center is aimed at addressing global “climate and food crises.”

For this month’s Feature, we examine how protests take shape, including times when they succeed, when they don’t, and the role young people play in pushing societies to change.

AI 2027, a paper written by AI Futures Project, outlines a near-future scenario where superhuman AI disrupts our daily lives at a pace no one can keep up with. Although it is a work of speculative fiction, it provides a strong reminder that the question we should be asking isn’t whether AI will change the world, but rather whether we’ll be ready when the time comes.

KAIST is undergoing one of its largest development initiatives to date, with 16 construction projects scheduled for completion by 2029. Spanning the 4 different campuses, the projects include cutting-edge research centers, expanded learning spaces, and even a Hanok-style exchange hall.

The hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters has become one of the most-viewed movies in Netflix history. However, beyond its catchy songs and vibrant visuals lies the revival of Korean shamanism in pop culture.

Once seen as relics of the past, this traditional belief is finding new life among the younger generations by reemerging across films, dramas, and various digital media. While many turn to shamanism for comfort in times of uncertainty, its rising popularity has also blurred the line between belief and business, raising concerns about misinformation and exploitation.

On September 8, mass protests led by Nepal’s Generation Z turned violent after a growing public frustration over corruption and a controversial social media ban.

The initial peaceful demonstrations spiraled out of control as police opened fire on the crowd, resulting in 72 fatalities and the resignation of the former prime minister. At the same time, a historic event occurred after former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed as Nepal’s first female interim Prime Minister.

As the elections approach, the nation now stands at a turning point. Will this youth-led uprising lead to meaningful political reform?

☔️THE KAIST HERALD SEPTEMBER ISSUE IS OUT NOW!☔️

In the first publication of Fall 2025, we tackle major changes that have occurred around the campus.
First up, KAIST is embarking on its most ambitious campus expansion yet, with 16 major construction projects planned through 2029. The future of KAIST is slowly being built brick by brick starting from state-of-the-art research facilities to the expansion of student spaces such as the Creative Learning Building.

KAIST has also rolled out a brand-new student ID card design for the first time in 17 years. The new design emerged from a student competition, showcasing a new vertical layout that brings a modern look to a campus staple.

Finally, in this month’s Feature, let’s all take a step back from academics and step into something more vibrant: KAIST’s festival culture. From the Spring semester’s Strawberry Party to Fall semester’s KAMF, these events serve as a vital reminder that KAIST is more than just labs and lectures. They’re where we celebrate student life and create memories that outlast the semester.
