Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad yesterday called for fighting propaganda and supporting the Palestinian cause, Al Khaleej Online reported.

His remarks came during the 98th meeting of the Standing Committee for Arab Media and the 16th regular meeting of the Executive Office of the Arab Information Ministers Council held in Kuwait.

Al Ahmad stressed on the importance of fighting propaganda and facing off its dangers, as well as putting together a strategy to tackle it on social media.

The prince said that spreading false propaganda on social media could trigger fierce wars among nations that claim the lives of thousands of innocent people.

He called for bringing together efforts to support the Palestinian cause, as well as using a media discourse that advocates for Palestinians and defends their cause.

Al Ahmad renewed his country's support for reaching a just and comprehensive solution for the Palestinian cause in line with international laws and resolutions.

The deal supports the realisation of the F/A-18E/F entering the Kuwait armed forces as a strike fighter designed for traditional strike operations and air support. Kuwait has previously used the aircraft for homeland defence but is phasing out its fleet of Hornet F/A-18C and F/A-18D aircraft.

Work on the project includes general logistics support, logistics programme management, and logistics support to aircraft during pilot training with Sniper advanced targeting pods (ATPs). It will be carried out for three years and will help enhance targeting capabilities.

This contract will strengthen Kuwait’s capability to counter regional threats and safeguard its borders and major infrastructure, according to the US.

GlobalData’s “Kuwait Defense Market 2022-2027” report claims the Kuwaiti Government is set to host one of the largest US military airbases in the Middle East at an expected cost of $32m. The construction of the new Cargo City will enable Kuwait to enhance the operational effectiveness of its military and promote security and stability throughout Kuwait.

The 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the subsequent occupation by Iraq, which lasted for almost seven months, prompted Kuwait to focus on developing a robust defence capability. Kuwait has since used its oil and gas export revenues to fund its defence procurements.

Kuwait’s military fixed-wing market forecast is valued at $496m but is projected to reach $1bn by 2026, according to GlobalData’s report “The Global Military Fixed-Wing Aircraft Market Forecast 2023-2033.”

However, last month, Boeing announced plans to end the F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft production in late 2025.

Kuwait, Boeing, and the US’s three-way linkage go back to the 1990s, as Kuwait acquired military fixed-wing aircraft from Boeing. Currently, in Kuwait’s equipment inventory, Kuwait has 31 F/A-18C and eight F/A-18D, with both acquisitions taking place in the early 1990s following the invasion of Iraq.

In September 2022, the US announced that it had approved M1A2K tank ammunition sales to Kuwait.

Mastercard, a leading technology company in the global payments industry, has collaborated with Google to launch Google Pay in Kuwait, strengthening digital payment capabilities in the country.

Cardholders can tap to pay with their Android phones or supported Wear OS devices in stores where contactless is in operation. They can also use Google Pay to make payments online and through apps.

A seamless way to transact, Google Pay saves customers from handing over their payment cards, touching physical buttons, or exchanging cash. Security and privacy are built into every aspect to ensure data is protected. Transactions are made with a virtual card number, so Google Pay does not share the real credit card number with the business, and therefore payment information remains safe. Customers save their cards for Google Pay in Google Wallet, a digital wallet that securely stores payment cards, loyalty cards, boarding passes, and more. The Central Bank of Kuwait recently granted several banks licenses to activate Google Wallet in the country.

Fueling efforts to accelerate the adoption of high-security digital payments, the launch aligns with the Kuwait Vision 2035 “New Kuwait” and the country’s ongoing digital transformation journey.

Erdem Çakar, Country Manager, Kuwait and Qatar, Mastercard, said: “We are delighted to join forces with Google to drive digital inclusion in Kuwait as we introduce Google Pay to the country and expand the variety of contactless payments available to its people. In a new world beyond payments, Google Pay blends convenience with security to provide peace of mind.”

To set up Google Pay, Mastercard cardholders can download the Google Wallet app from the Google Play store and follow the instructions, or visit pay.google.com online. Once their Mastercard is added, they can simply choose Google Pay at the checkout, confirm their purchase, and pay.

“When we launched Google Wallet last year, we wanted to give as many people as possible access to a secure digital wallet, and we are thrilled to expand our offering to Kuwait,” said Jenny Cheng, Vice President and General Manager, Google Wallet. “Tap and pay on public transit, save mobile tickets for shows, or keep your boarding pass at hand - these are just some ways you can use Google Wallet throughout your day.”

According to Mastercard’s New Payments Index 2022, 64% of MENA consumers (compared to 61% globally) increased their use of at least one digital payment method in the last year, including digital cards, SMS payments, digital money transfer apps, and instant payment services.

Mastercard has made a worldwide pledge to bring 1 billion people and 50 million micro and small businesses into the digital economy by 2025.
