The farmers market has been transformed into a large-scale community kitchen in Beirut, now serving more than 3,500 meals every day to displaced people. As the number of displaced continues to rise—surpassing one million across the country—the need for daily support has become increasingly urgent. At the heart of this effort is a strong network of volunteers, whose time and dedication are essential to keeping the kitchen running and ensuring that thousands receive warm meals each day.

Displaced families sheltering along the Beirut Waterfront have been forced to reinforce their tents as a storm moves across the area, bringing strong winds and a dust plume that has turned the sky yellow and filled the air with sand. Despite these efforts, several tents have already been damaged or partially torn by the wind.

What felt like an escalation because of the evacuation orders issued outside Beirut’s southern suburbs is, in reality, a continuation of where Israel left off in 2024. The two buildings targeted today were in fact the same ones that had already received evacuation warnings in the final round of strikes before the 2024 ceasefire.

According to the UNHCR, more than 800,000 people are now displaced across Lebanon. Many families who fled their towns have found temporary refuge in collective shelters, schools, or rented apartments. But for thousands of others who could not secure a place indoors or afford rising rents, the Beirut Corniche has become an improvised refuge. For many, the Corniche felt like one of the few places left that was visible, public, and therefore safe. But that sense of safety was shattered when tents were hit there last night, reminding those sheltering by the sea that even the spaces they believed would protect them are no longer guaranteed to do so.

More than 500 000 people have been displaced across Lebanon amid the ongoing escalation. They have fled their homes, primarily from southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, and Beirut’s southern suburbs. Over 100 000 displaced people are staying in 500 official collective shelters, while many others have sought refuge in public spaces across Beirut.
