At Monday’s Cabinet press briefing, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre pushed back against the United Workers Party’s public call for a stronger crime-fighting plan, labelling the criticism “disrespectful.” The UWP, through former ministers and candidates Sarah Flood-Beaubrun, Laura Jn Pierre-Noel, and Titus Preville, had held a press conference demanding more decisive government action in the face of escalating crime. Rather than address the substance of those concerns, Pierre chose to go on the offensive. Saint Lucians are watching, and they deserve answers, not deflection.

Residents in the Bois D’Orange corridor are raising the alarm about construction activity near Mt. Picard, where landfill material is reportedly being dumped into the marshland on the far side of the mountain past the Blue Rock Quarry. The concern is serious: that marshland acts as a natural flood buffer for communities from Trouya all the way to Morne Giraud. Locals haven’t forgotten when Corinth flooded, cars were swept away, and Courts containers were carried downriver. Now there are questions about who authorized a road being cut through to Trou Gascon beach and what oversight, if any, is in place. The Bois D’Orange wetland also feeds into Trou Gascon Bay and its coral reef. If the claims are accurate, the environmental and flood risk to Corinth, Marisule, and surrounding communities is not a maybe. It’s a when.

In February 2026, the Office of the Prime Minister published an official statement on govt.lc titled “Factual Clarification on Water Rate Claims.” The headline was bold: “No Water Rate Increase Has Been Approved or Implemented.” They called claims of a 32% increase “inaccurate and misleading.” Fast forward to May 2026, and WASCO is now notifying the public that new rates are coming soon. No spin. No rebranding. New rates. The same government that told you not to believe what you were hearing is now watching the water company prepare to charge you more. Saint Lucia, read the room.

The United States Embassy in Jamaica has announced an additional US$2.5 million in foreign assistance for Hurricane Melissa recovery, bringing total American support to more than US$24.5 million. The latest injection will go toward repairing hurricane-damaged homes and restoring water systems as Jamaica shifts from emergency relief into long-term rebuilding. For a region still watching how major powers show up after disasters, this commitment sends a signal.

If you share custody or have concerns about your child's travel, this is critical information. The U.S. Department of State operates the Children's Passport Issuance Alert Program, a free service that notifies a parent or legal guardian the moment someone applies for a U.S. passport for their child. It is one of the most direct legal tools available to prevent international parental child abduction before it happens. Parents do not have to wait for a crisis. Enrollment is free, and the protection is immediate.

Bermuda-based Butterfield Bank is set to acquire CIBC Caribbean, and while bank officials are assuring customers that no immediate job losses or operational disruptions are expected, one thing is clear: the CIBC name that has served this region for decades will eventually disappear. Barbados is expected to remain a key operational hub under the new structure, but Caribbean customers and employees will be watching closely to see if those assurances hold. This is a major shift in the regional banking landscape, and the full impact remains to be seen.
