Finally, I managed to get that photo.

This is a photograph of the International Space Station passing in front of the Sun. I captured it today from the Wadduwa area. Because the ISS travels at about 28,000 km per hour, it was visible in front of the Sun for only 0.6 seconds, less than one second.

In this photo, the black silhouettes are 9 frames I captured during that 0.6 second transit of the ISS across the Sun. The small black dots around it are sunspots.

I had previously photographed the ISS passing in front of the Moon, but when I tried to capture it in front of the Sun, I missed many chances. Sometimes the weather didn’t cooperate, and other times my photography skills weren’t enough to manage something that happens in less than a second.

Balancing the strong sunlight with the camera sensor is another big challenge. This transit happened at 12:01:31 PM, exactly when the Sun was overhead. Even though I used a filter, I was still worried about exposing the sensor for too long.

Over time, with practice, I was finally able to capture this shot.

The new Sony A7V camera sent by Sony and CameraLK was very helpful for this. Although the A7V can shoot at 30 frames per second, I started shooting about two seconds early. Because of a slight delay while writing data to the SD card, I was able to capture only about 9 frames while the ISS was in front of the Sun.

Moments like this really show the importance of using a high speed SD card, especially when working with milliseconds.

I’ll upload the behind the scenes video of capturing this photo very soon. 🛰️
