Being a female in a male-dominated arena like politics cannot be easy. But hats off to 'iron lady' who fires back at the recent unnecessary sexualisation of her breasts, putting the objectification right back in its place. Swipe right to see her statement 💪🏼💙

Our experiences may look different. Our support structures may not be the same. But for each one of us, there will be that area we wished that we had more support in.

For me it was breastfeeding, and yes I mourned how unnecessarily difficult the process was as a result. But it also birthed The Milk Coach, and my desire to help even just ONE mum to feel supported where they previously were not.

So for each one of you, you may feel disappointed or even angry, you may wish that it was different, and that you had more support in that one area (or two or three!) I'm sending a big hug to you 🤗 But you can also use your experience to make sure that with the next mum you come across, you know how to support them.

It takes a village.

Please feel free to reach out if you just need to hear some supportive words, I'm here 💙💧

My friend has a motto - "When in doubt, whip it out". It has definitely been my life hack on many occasions with my two boys (Resisting sleep? Fallen off the sofa? Crying nonstop at the visa office? Fluey? Breastfeeding got my back!).

But do you know that science actually backs this up? A study on babies undergoing blood tests (the dreaded heel lance) showed that babies who were being breastfed showed 91% less crying and 84% less grimacing than babies who were not being breastfed. What's even more fascinating is that 11 of the 15 breastfed babies did not cry or grimace at all - suggesting the pain had not even started. The study also showed that breastfeeding prevented the normal rise in heart rate associated with pain.

Now realistically you may not be comfortable whipping a breast out at the hospital at vaccination time, but some breastfeeding soon after can help with the pain!

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The messages we receive around feeding and becoming a food source can be challenging to navigate. Though well intentioned, sometimes they can invoke feelings such as shame, guilt, and that gut-wrenching question of, “what’s wrong with me?”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This month isn’t to shame choosing or needing an alternative method of feeding your child. It’s to recognize that breastfeeding can be beautiful and it can also be brutal at times. It is meant to educate and empower parents to know their options and make the best possible choice for their family.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
SUPPORT is best.

What is something that you wish you knew about breastfeeding before having your baby?

To all the ammis Pumping... Breastfeeding... Bottle feeding... Feeling like an endless supplier of milk... Happy M-Udders Day!! Very soon there will come a time when your days of feeling like a cow are far behind you! But today remember that your efforts, they are all worth it 💦💙

I jumped on a great Zoom call the other day with Kerri of & Serena of .gently. We all hailed from different backgrounds and trainings, but it was so beautiful to see the shared heart for "how can we support Sri Lankan mums to have better prenatal, birth and postnatal experiences?" The future looks brighter ❤️

Despite Sri Lanka’s increasing female employment in crucial sectors, we still have a long way to go in terms of wage parity, working conditions and labour standards. Women are also still learning to stand up for their rights as mothers, defaulting to being apologetic for it.
Did you know that a significant amendment to the Shop and Office Act was passed in 2018 mandating the “provision of nursing intervals for nursing mothers” (previously only mandated in the state sector, although sometimes practiced informally in the private sector).
This may have been a small step for mankind, but it was a giant leap for Sri Lankan mothers! 🚀
So… these are your current breastfeeding rights in accordance with the provisions of Maternity Benefits Ordinance No.32 of 1939 (amended in 2018):
- You are entitled to 2️⃣ paid feeding breaks per working day until your child is 1️⃣ year old.
- Your employer should provide nursing facilities. The duration of each nursing break is 3️⃣0️⃣ minutes if a creche or other suitable place is provided by the employer; otherwise it should not be less than 1️⃣ hour.
- Nursing breaks are provided in addition to the meal or rest break provided and they are regarded as time worked.⏲️
I have often said this - long-sighted employers are those who recognise that working mothers are raising their future employees! Giving these children the best start to life ensures healthy, happy, well-adjusted employees in a couple of decades… not to mention healthy, happy, well-adjusted mothers on staff now. It is crucial that companies count the cost with this long-term thinking in mind, and that big corporates get on board and pave the way.

At some point in your breastfeeding journey you will find the need to drop one feed, or more – either when you start partially weaning your baby onto solids*, or when returning to work**.
What you want to avoid when dropping a feed is going cold-turkey… this can lead to painful engorgement, blocked ducts and even mastitis. To avoid this (and assuming that you have the luxury of time!), it is best to tackle one feed at a time, decreasing the time spent on each breast gradually, in increments, one side at a time. It is also wise to pick a day to start when both you and your baby are feeling healthy and well-rested, to ensure that the transition goes as smoothly as possible. If you’re getting ready to go back to work, start the transition at least two weeks in advance.
An example of how to drop a feed which would usually last 20 minutes (10 minutes per side) is to go step-by-step, as follows:
- Day 1-2: 10 mins on the left side, 5 mins on the right (followed by bottle/solids)
- Day 3: 10 mins on the left side only (followed by bottle/solids)
- Day 4-5: 5 mins on the left side only (followed by bottle/solids)
- Day 6: Only bottle/solids
* WHO recommends starting solids at 6 months+
** I know the idea of expressing milk at work can be daunting, but it’s not impossible - if you would like to give it a go, please do reach out and I can share some tips for your individual workplace set-up/practices.
