The Common Baron (Euthalia aconthea)

Beautiful nymphalid butterfly found across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. Belonging to the family Nymphalidae and subfamily Limenitidinae, it is well known for its remarkable camouflage, often resembling a dried or damaged leaf when resting. It has brownish to olive-green wings with irregular patterns and distinctive pale markings, while the underside is highly cryptic, allowing it to blend seamlessly with surrounding foliage. It is commonly found in forests, gardens, plantations, and other habitats with suitable host plants. Its caterpillars can have a spiny appearance. Its leaf-like appearance is an excellent example of protective camouflage, helping it avoid predators.

Common Yamfly - (Loxura atymnus)

Found in South Asia, including India and Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful butterfly with long tail streamers and a delicate flight pattern. They are known to consume nectar secreted from extrafloral nectaries stimulated by ants. And they have a symbiotic relationship with ants, who protect them from predators in exchange for the nectar. The caterpillars of the Loxura atymnus atymnus feed on the leaves of yam plants, hence the common name "Yamfly."

Lemon Emigrant (Catopsilia pomona) 🍋🦋

Common and widespread butterflies of the family Pieridae, found throughout Sri Lanka and much of Asia. It is easily recognized by its pale lemon-yellow to greenish underside, which provides excellent camouflage among leaves. A strong and fast flier, it is often seen in gardens, forests, and open habitats, feeding on flower nectar. Its caterpillars feed mainly on Cassia and Senna species, and during certain seasons this butterfly is known to form impressive migratory swarms across the landscape.
