🏛️ The Biggest Myth About Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is it just a "Political Story”
Many people think GDP is simply a political narrative. But that is not true. GDP is an Official Statistic.
We hear about GDP almost every day. Politicians, news anchors and TV analysts frequently talk about GDP growth. ❗️In many cases, however, we also see people discussing these numbers without properly understanding what they actually mean.
💎But what exactly is GDP?
How is it calculated?
What do these numbers really tell us?
🎯The purpose of this post series is to explain the basic concepts of GDP in a very simple way. By understanding these concepts, we can better identify how numbers are sometimes misused in political stories, social media claims and TV debates.
First, let’s understand what Official Statistics are - Official Statistics are statistical data produced by government agencies or recognised international organisations using scientific methods.
In Sri Lanka, the official agency responsible for compiling and publishing GDP estimates is the Department of Census and Statistics.
📌So, what is GDP?
GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is the total value of all goods and services produced within a country during a specific period of time (quarterly or annually).
If GDP is calculated using current prices:➡️ 1. Nominal GDP
If GDP is adjusted for inflation using constant prices:➡️ 2. Real GDP
🔍A Simple Example
Imagine a small country with a very small economy:
• A farmer sells rice = Rs. 100,000
• A tailor sells clothes = Rs. 50,000
• A software developer provides services = Rs. 150,000
GDP = 100,000 + 50,000 + 150,000
GDP = Rs. 300,000
This GDP figure is not just a “story.” It is the result of a massive data collection process involving surveys, business records, customs data, censuses, and economic reports.
📌Why does this matter?
Official Statistics are a public good.
They help citizens understand:
✔️ Whether the economy is actually growing
✔️ Whether policies improve people’s living conditions
✔️ How inflation affects the economy
✔️ Who really benefits from economic growth
❗️The problem begins when GDP figures are used without proper explanation or context.
💎That is why understanding the basic concepts of GDP is the first step toward becoming a smarter citizen and a smarter voter.
