The Golden State Killer: The Mystery That Took Over 40 Years to Solve
For decades, California was haunted by a mysterious criminal who seemed impossible to catch.
Between 1974 and 1986, a man committed a series of burglaries, sexual assaults, and murders across different parts of California. Because investigators initially believed the crimes were being committed by different people, he became known by several names, including the East Area Ra**st, the Original Night Stalker, and eventually the Golden State Killer.
The attacker was terrifyingly careful. He often stalked neighborhoods before striking, entered homes at night, and left very little evidence behind. Despite hundreds of investigators working on the case, the suspect managed to disappear without being identified.

However, investigators had one important clue that technology couldn't fully use at the time: DNA evidence collected from crime scenes.
In 2018, detectives decided to try a groundbreaking approach. Instead of searching criminal DNA databases, they used genetic genealogy a method normally used by people researching their family history.
Investigators created a DNA profile from the crime-scene evidence and compared it with profiles in a public genealogy database. They didn't find the killer directly. Instead, they found distant relatives.
By building enormous family trees and tracing generations of relatives, investigators gradually narrowed the search. After months of work, one name stood out:
Joseph James DeAngelo
A former police officer who had been living a quiet, ordinary life in California.
Detectives secretly collected DNA from items he had discarded and compared it to the crime-scene evidence.
The result was a match.
On April 24, 2018, DeAngelo was arrested, ending one of the most infamous cold cases in American history.
In 2020, he pleaded guilty to multiple murders and kidnappings and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
