Greek Chicken Gyros Recipe 🥙🌮
Ingredients
•For the Chicken Marinade:
500g (1 lb) chicken thighs or breast (boneless, skinless)
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 3 garlic cloves, minced
• Juice of 1 lemon
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 1 tsp ground paprika
• 1 tsp ground cumin
• ½ tsp ground coriander
• ½ tsp salt
• ½ tsp black pepper
For the Tzatziki Sauce:
• 1 cup Greek yogurt (full fat)
• 1 cucumber, grated and squeezed to remove excess water
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tbsp fresh dill or mint, chopped (optional)
• 1 tsp lemon juice
• Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gyros:
• 4-6 pita breads
• 1 cup lettuce, shredded
• 1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced
• 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
• Feta cheese (optional)
Instructions
1. Marinate the Chicken:
. In a bowl, combine olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, oregano, paprika, cumin, coriander, salt, and pepper.
Add the chicken and coat it thoroughly in the marinade.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight for more flavor).
2. Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce:
. In a bowl, mix the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, dill or mint, salt, and pepper.
Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
3. Cook the Chicken:
. Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat.
Cook the marinated chicken for 5-7 minutes per side, until fully cooked and slightly charred.
Let the chicken rest for a few minutes, then slice into strips.
4. Assemble the Gyros:
. Warm the pita bread in a dry pan or microwave.
Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce on the pita.
Add sliced chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and feta cheese if desired.
Fold or wrap the pita to create the gyro.
