Living Continuum – Malabe, Sri Lanka | By D S M A

Living Continuum by DSMA explores the seamless relationship between living and creative practice within a compact urban site. Designed as both a residence and a design studio, the project reflects a flexible architectural approach where daily life, work, and gathering coexist naturally.

Organized around a series of courtyards and open-to-sky spaces, the design brings natural light, ventilation, and greenery deep into the interior, creating a calm and climate-responsive environment. The architects also emphasize material honesty by incorporating reused and locally available materials, forming a simple yet resilient architectural language.

Through its adaptable spatial planning and thoughtful integration of nature, DSMA creates more than a house or studio—Living Continuum becomes a living framework that supports everyday life, creativity, and collaboration.

The arched timber window commonly seen in Sri Lankan walawwas originated from European colonial architectural influence, particularly introduced by the Portuguese Empire and later refined during the rule of the Dutch Empire. These colonial construction techniques, especially masonry arches and shuttered windows, were gradually adapted by local builders and integrated into traditional Sri Lankan manor houses, creating the distinctive architectural character seen in many historic walawwas today

Bothale Pahala Walawwa, located in Bothale, Mirigama, Sri Lanka, is a historic manor house believed to be over 150 years old. Once owned by former Brigadier Jayawardana, the walawwa preserves a rich legacy through its collection of antique furniture and a pair of traditional carts estimated to be more than a century old. Reflecting the timeless character of Sri Lankan monsoon architecture, the residence features a beautiful internal courtyard that brings light, air, and rain into the heart of the home. Renovation work has recently begun under the ownership, with the hope that the restoration will carefully preserve the walawwa’s historic and cultural value for future generations.

Haritha Retreat, located in the dense urban setting of Pepiliyana, is a private residence designed to reflect the client’s personal needs while responding to its congested surroundings. Created for an extended family, the design centers around a lush, internal courtyard and pool, offering framed forest-like views that block out the external concrete landscape. The multi-level layout seamlessly connects spaces like the open-plan living and dining areas, double-height living room, minimalist bedrooms, and cozy recreational zones. Thoughtfully placed courtyards, balconies, and a green roof terrace enhance the sense of calm, while the landscape—designed with a rainforest concept—brings tranquility and harmony to everyday living

Perched at the highest point of a cinnamon estate in Ahangama, the Round House Estate Bungalow by Perera is a poetic dialogue between architecture and landscape.

Conceived as a circular forest clearing within 12 acres of dense plantation, the bungalow opens to breathtaking 360° views over surrounding paddy fields while quietly merging with its natural context. The inner edge is defined with intention, while the outer edge dissolves organically into the trees — allowing the structure to feel discovered rather than imposed.

Zoned into asymmetrical solids and voids, the spaces mimic the experience of walking through a forest: distant vistas framed by trunks and canopies, ever-changing perspectives from every angle. A central banyan tree anchors the clearing, envisioned to one day intertwine with the home’s timber columns — blurring the boundary between the built and the grown.

Crafted entirely in natural timber, the lightweight structure gently hovers above the land, preserving its contours and minimizing its footprint. Skylights filter sunlight like a forest canopy, casting shifting pools of light that animate the interiors throughout the day.

Here, architecture doesn’t dominate the landscape — it belongs to it. 🌿
