THE LAST PASSENGER

It was 2:13 AM when Michael Carter accepted his final ride of the night.

Rain hammered against his windshield as he drove down a lonely highway outside town. His phone was almost dead, and all he wanted was to finish one last trip and get home.

Then a new ride request appeared.

Pickup: Old Willow Bus Stop
Passenger: Emma Wilson

Michael almost declined.

The pickup location was far from the main road, surrounded by darkness and trees.

But he sighed.

“Just one more.”

He turned the car around.

When Michael reached the bus stop, he saw a young woman standing beneath the broken shelter.

She looked to be in her early twenties.

She wore a black coat and had long, wet hair covering part of her face.

She opened the back door and got inside without saying a word.

“Emma?” Michael asked.

“Yeah.”

She stared out the window.

“Where are we going?”

“142 Willow Street.”

Michael checked the GPS.

“That’s pretty far.”

“I know.”

There was something strange about her voice.

Not scary.

Just… tired.

Michael started driving.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

Then Emma suddenly whispered,

“Please… get me home before my mother finds out I’m dead.”

Michael's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

He looked at her through the rear-view mirror.

“What did you just say?”

Emma didn't answer.

“Did you say you're dead?”

She continued staring out the window.

“Just drive.”

Michael tried to convince himself that he had simply heard her wrong.

Maybe she said something else.

Maybe the rain and exhaustion were getting to him.

But a few minutes later, he noticed something strange.

Emma's coat was completely soaked.

Her hair was dripping with rain.

Yet there wasn't a single wet spot on the back seat.

Michael frowned.

He looked at the mirror again.

Emma was still there.

“Bad night?” he asked.

She nodded.

“Yeah.”

“Boyfriend trouble?”

For the first time, she smiled.

“Something like that.”

Michael smiled back.

“I have a daughter around your age.”

“How old?”

“Eight.”

Emma looked at him through the mirror.

“What’s her name?”

“Lily.”

Emma's smile disappeared.

She looked away.

“Tell her…”

She stopped.

“Tell her what?”

“Never mind.”

Twenty minutes later, they reached Willow Street.

Michael slowed down.

The GPS announced:

“You have arrived.”

The house at number 142 stood at the end of the street.

It was old and completely dark.

There was police tape around the front yard.

Michael looked at the address again.

“Are you sure this is the place?”

No answer.

He looked into the rear-view mirror.

The back seat was empty.

Michael's heart dropped.

“Emma?”

He turned around.

Nothing.

The door was still locked.

He checked the floor.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something lying on the seat.

A small silver bracelet.

It had a tiny letter engraved on it.

E.

Michael stepped out of the car.

Before he could decide what to do, the upstairs light of the house suddenly turned on.

A woman appeared behind the window.

She stared down at him.

Then the front door opened.

An older woman stepped outside.

“Can I help you?”

Michael held up the bracelet.

“Are you Emma's mother?”

The woman's face changed instantly.

She stared at the bracelet.

“Where did you get that?”

“Your daughter gave it to me.”

The woman covered her mouth.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Emma is dead.”

Michael froze.

“What?”

“She died two years ago.”

The rain continued pouring around them.

Michael looked back at his taxi.

“No… I just picked her up.”

The woman shook her head.

“Emma died on October 14th, 2024.”

Michael looked at the police tape.

Then at the house.

“Was she wearing a black coat?”

The woman slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

“Where did she die?”

The woman looked toward the road.

“At the old bus stop.”

Michael felt the blood drain from his face.

The exact place where he had picked her up.

The woman invited him inside.

Her hands were shaking as she explained what had happened two years earlier.

Emma had left the house at exactly 2:13 AM.

She was supposed to meet her boyfriend.

She never made it.

Her car was found abandoned near the old bus stop.

Her body was discovered the next morning.

Michael stared at the floor.

“Why would she come back with me?”

The woman didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at the bracelet in his hand.

“Emma wore that every day.”

Michael suddenly remembered something.

During the entire drive, Emma had never once touched the bracelet.

Because…

it had already been left behind.

Michael rushed back to his taxi.

He locked the doors and started the engine.

His hands were shaking.

He opened the ride app.

The trip details were still there.

Passenger: Emma Wilson

Pickup: Old Willow Bus Stop

Time: 2:13 AM

Drop-off: 142 Willow Street

Fare: $0.00

Michael stared at the screen.

Then the app refreshed.

The passenger profile disappeared.

His phone went completely black.

A second later, someone whispered from the back seat.

“You forgot something.”

Michael slowly looked into the rear-view mirror.

Emma was sitting there again.

But this time, she wasn't looking at him.

She was looking through the window.

Toward his house.

Michael's voice trembled.

“What do you want?”

Emma finally looked at him.

“I need you to save her.”

“Save who?”

“Lily.”

Michael's stomach dropped.

“My daughter?”

Emma nodded.

“She wasn't supposed to be there.”

Michael stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“I couldn't save her the first time.”

Michael drove home as fast as he could.

He reached his house at 3:41 AM.

The front door was unlocked.

“Lily?”

No answer.

He ran upstairs.

His daughter was asleep in her bed.

Safe.

Michael nearly collapsed with relief.

He sat beside her and watched her sleep.

Then Lily opened her eyes.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

She looked toward the bedroom window.

“Who was that lady?”

Michael froze.

“What lady?”

“The lady standing outside my window.”

He slowly turned toward the window.

The curtains were closed.

He walked over and pulled them apart.

There was nobody outside.

But someone had written something on the wet glass with a finger.

Four words.

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING ME HOME.

The next morning, Michael went to the police.

He told them everything.

They searched Emma Wilson's case file.

Then one of the officers pulled out an old photograph.

“Michael…”

He placed the photograph on the desk.

“This was taken one week before Emma died.”

Michael stared at it.

His face went pale.

Emma was standing beside a man.

But it wasn't her boyfriend.

It was Michael.

Michael shook his head.

“That isn't me.”

The officer looked at him.

“We know.”

Michael couldn't breathe.

The photograph was dated:

October 7, 2024.

Two years before he had ever met Emma.

Then his phone vibrated.

One new message.

UNKNOWN NUMBER

>> You brought me home.

Another message appeared.

>> Now I can finally leave.

Michael stared at the screen.

Then a third message appeared.

>> But there's one more passenger waiting for you.

His taxi app suddenly opened by itself.

A new ride request appeared.

Michael's hands began to shake.

Passenger: Lily Carter

Pickup: 142 Willow Street

Pickup time: 2:13 AM

Michael stared at the screen.

Because it was only 10:06 AM.

And the ride was scheduled for tonight.

2:13 AM.

The passenger was his eight-year-old daughter.

And the pickup location…

was their own house.
