Sri Lanka welcomed almost as many tourists in July 2026 as a year earlier, but tourism earnings remained noticeably lower. The next stage of recovery may depend less on arrival numbers and more on who visits, how long they stay and how much value the economy captures from each trip.

What the numbers do suggest is that the industry's next challenge is becoming more commercial: attracting visitors is one part of recovery, but extracting greater economic value from each trip is becoming just as important.

The EU–India FTA has not yet entered into force, giving Sri Lanka a valuable preparation window. The real challenge is not losing EU access, but protecting competitiveness as Indian exporters gain stronger tariff advantages.

On 24 August, the Export Development Board confirmed that it had discussed the potential impact with consultants engaged by the European Commission, with particular attention given to apparel, preferential market access, rules of origin and the use of Indian inputs in Sri Lankan production.

Here is what Sri Lankan exporters can do before the agreement takes effect. 👉🏻 https://lankabiznews.com/eu-india-fta-sri-lanka-export-position/

Sri Lanka is moving towards attracting investors for Mannar Basin gas development. The resource could improve energy security, but success depends on commercial viability, environmental safeguards and ensuring gas supports rather than delays the renewable transition.

Mannar Basin natural gas could strengthen Sri Lanka's energy security and reduce fuel exposure. But commercial viability, methane, ecology and investment terms matter.

Sri Lanka currently shares a 10% US Section 301 tariff with several apparel competitors. But Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia have been promised a pathway to Section 301-free quotas that Sri Lanka does not currently have.

The White House directed the US Trade Representative to establish three-year tariff-rate quotas, or TRQs, for those four countries. Specified volumes of qualifying textile and apparel goods linked to purchases of US cotton and textile inputs could then enter the United States without the additional 10% Section 301 charge. Sri Lanka was not included in that mechanism.

Islamic finance has grown into a US$4.4 trillion global industry, yet many businesses still misunderstand it as simply “banking without interest”.

Sri Lanka already has the foundations of an Islamic financial ecosystem:

🏦 Amãna Bank operates as the country’s fully fledged non-interest-based licensed commercial bank, providing Shariah-compliant banking and business-financing solutions.

📊 LOLC Al-Falaah offers alternative financial services through structures such as leasing, trade finance and profit-sharing investments.

🌱 Vidullanka PLC marked a capital-market milestone by issuing Sri Lanka’s first listed sukuk, raising up to LKR 500 million through an asset-backed structure connected to renewable energy.

Islamic finance is not limited to Muslim customers or religious investment. It can offer businesses alternative ways to finance machinery, trade, infrastructure and expansion while potentially connecting Sri Lanka with investors across the Middle East and wider Islamic capital markets.

The opportunity is real, but attracting serious investment will require stronger awareness, consistent regulation, transparent structures and commercially viable projects.
