Old Polythene Bag Manufacturing Process 1. Raw Material Preparation • Polyethylene granules (plastic pellets) were the base raw material. • These were typically Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) or High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE). • The granules were mixed with additives (like color masterbatch, stabilizers). 2. Film Extrusion (Blown Film Method) • The pellets were fed into an extruder machine, where they were melted. • The molten plastic was forced through a circular die to form a thin tube of film. • Air was blown inside to expand the tube → forming a “bubble.” • The bubble was cooled by air rings and pulled upward by rollers. • It was then flattened into a continuous sheet (roll form). 3. Printing (Optional) • Old printing was done by flexographic printing machines using solvent-based inks. • This allowed company names, logos, or designs to be added on the film. 4. Bag Cutting & Sealing • The flat polythene film roll was fed into a cutting and sealing machine. • Heat bars sealed the edges and bottoms of bags. • Bags were cut according to the required size (carry bags, grocery bags, etc.). 5. Handle Making (for shopping bags) • In older systems, handles were either: • Punched out manually with a die (for T-shirt type bags), or • Attached separately by heat sealing. 6. Packaging • Finished bags were counted, bundled, and packed for distribution.⸻⚙️ Characteristics of the Old Process • Labor-intensive and slower compared to today. • Less automation → more manual cutting, sealing, and stacking. • Solvent-based inks → higher environmental impact. • Recycling and waste handling were minimal.
