President Ranil Wickramasinghe underscored the imperative of integrating modern technology, including artificial intelligence, into the healthcare sector. Addressing a gathering at the handover ceremony of the "Accident and Emergency Treatment Unit" at Point Pedro Base Hospital, built under the Dutch government's DRIVE relief loan system, President Wickramasinghe highlighted the challenge of retaining trained medical professionals in Sri Lanka, with a significant proportion leaving the country annually. He emphasized the collective responsibility to enhance the country's healthcare services, renowned for their quality, and to bolster the economy effectively.
To address the shortage of medical personnel, President Wickramasinghe announced plans to increase annual recruitment at Sir John Kotalawala Defense University and facilitate necessary infrastructure enhancements for medical training. He also granted teaching hospital rights to the Faculty of Medicine at Green University and acknowledged a similar request from Lyceum Campus.
President Wickramasinghe expressed gratitude to the Dutch government for their support in providing advanced medical facilities to Jaffna and Point Pedro. These facilities include an Accident and Emergency Unit, Primary Care Unit, Radiology Department (equipped with X-ray, ultrasound, and CT scanners), Intensive Care Unit, Operating Room, Premature Baby Care Unit, Surgical and Maternity Wards, Sterile Care Unit, Dialysis Unit, and Laboratory. The development, funded through a 4 billion rupee concessional loan, aims to modernize healthcare delivery in the region.
During the ceremony, President Wickramasinghe inaugurated the Emergency and Emergency Treatment Unit, interacted with hospital staff, and presented tokens of appreciation to key figures including Mrs. Bonnie Horbach, the Netherlands Ambassador to Sri Lanka, and Mr. Paul de Bruin, Managing Director of VAMED.
State Minister Mrs. Sita Ambepola commended the milestone achieved in healthcare progress in the Northern Province, attributing it to the support of the Dutch government and embassy under the DRIVE project.
Northern Province Governor P. emphasized the efficient utilization of these modern healthcare facilities for the benefit of the populace, urging health authorities to collaborate effectively.
Ambassador Bonnie Horbach highlighted the significance of equitable access to healthcare in fostering reconciliation, referencing the Dutch government's assistance in hospital development projects.
In another development, President Wickramasinghe presided over the launch of the "Farm to Gate" web application at Palali Air Force Base. This platform aims to empower farmers and small enterprises by facilitating direct access to markets, bypassing intermediaries.
Notable attendees at the event included Minister Douglas Devananda, State Ministers Angajan Ramanathan and Cader Mastan, Member of Parliament Dharlingam Siddharthan, former State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran, and senior government officials.
