Nepal Faces Deadly Youth-Led Protests Over Social Media Ban
Nepal is in turmoil following a nationwide youth-led uprising, known as the โGen Z protests,โ triggered by the governmentโs decision to ban major social media platforms on September 4, 2025. Platforms affected included Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.
The protests, led by young people demanding freedom of expression, transparency, and anti-corruption reforms, quickly escalated into violent clashes. At least 19 people have died and hundreds have been injured. Protesters have stormed and set fire to public buildings, including the parliament, presidential office, political party offices, and private residences.
In response, Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli resigned on September 9, and the government lifted the social media ban. Authorities have imposed curfews in Kathmandu and other areas, and the Nepali Army has been deployed to maintain order. The government has promised compensation for victimsโ families, free medical care for the injured, and an investigation into the unrest.
Despite these measures, protests continue as youth demand systemic change and accountability, signaling that Nepalโs political and social tensions are far from over.
