The on-going controversy on the proposed 22nd Amendment has understandably become a show of strength between the NPP government and the joint opposition. The latter has also mobilised a powerful ally, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. As it usually happens during debates on a proposed policy or legislation, the opposition in this controversy too has been trying to take the upper hand by raising the level of the noise it makes.

Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) represented Sri Lanka at the 28th Annual Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) Conference held in Victoria, Canada, from August 31 to September 2.

The three-day conference brought together defence and military leaders from around 30 countries to exchange views on key regional and international security concerns. During the discussions, Defence Secretary Thuyacontha shared Sri Lankaโ€™s perspectives on evolving security dynamics and emerging challenges, while highlighting the importance of strengthening cooperation among countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

The 160th Police Day commemoration was held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Thimbirigasyaya Field Force Headquarters yesterday (03).

Addressing the event, President Dissanayake announced that the Government would provide the necessary facilities to transform the Sri Lanka Police into a highly respected service.

This includes introducing a proper promotion scheme, providing new uniforms by around the middle of next year, granting risk allowances to all police officers, improving infrastructure and recruiting the required human resources.

The President also commended the Police for its 160-year contribution to maintaining public peace and security, while highlighting the need to combat the illicit drug trade and organised crime.
