US celebrity judge and social media star Frank Caprio has died aged 88, his family has said.

Over a 40-year career in Rhode Island, he famously used compassion and humour to make judgements that took into consideration the personal circumstances of the people in the dock.

Videos of Judge Caprio presiding over cases on his hit TV show Caught in Providence have had billions of views on social media, earning him the title the "nicest judge in the world".

His death following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was announced on his official Instagram account, where he was remembered for his "warmth" and "unwavering belief in the goodness of people".

Judge Caprio had presided over thousands of cases in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, before embarking on a TV career.

His signature courtroom style produced viral clips ranging from him inviting children to sit with him behind the bench during cases, to announcing a "mini-judge" soft toy of himself.

A TikTok video showcasing his morning routine - brushing his teeth, signing his book and watching videos of his own show - has had more than 5m views.

In an 2019 interview, Judge Caprio said his courtroom proceedings "show a slice of life of Rhode Island that is very interesting, and it reflects the same issues people are experiencing nationwide".

David Caprio, his son, thanked fans for their love and support and urged people to "spread a little kindness" in his father's memory.

In an Instagram statement to his 3.4 million followers, Judge Caprio was remembered for the "countless acts of kindness he inspired".

"His warmth, humour, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him," the statement said.

During its run, Caught in Providence was nominated for three Daytime Emmys, with Judge Caprio earning two of his own nominations last year.

The company behind it, Debmar-Mercury, paid tribute to Judge Caprio's "unique brand of compassion and common sense approach".

"We will miss him dearly," co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said in a statement.

After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023, Judge Caprio said he was "fully prepared to fight as hard I can" and thanked followers for their support.

In one of his last social media posts, Judge Caprio announced he was back in hospital after suffering a "setback" in his treatment and asked his followers for their prayers.

Judge Caprio is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce Caprio, as well as their five children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

NH Collection Colombo is set to usher in a new era of elevated dining with the arrival of internationally acclaimed Chef Jimmy López, Executive Sous Chef at Anantara Siam Bangkok, for a four-night culinary residency that brings the soul of Latin America to the heart of Colombo.

A native of Cholula, Mexico, Chef Jimmy López has crafted a dynamic global career, cooking across 17 countries and refining his art in prestigious kitchens from Barcelona to Bangkok. Currently helming culinary operations at Anantara Siam, Chef López is known for blending traditional Latin flavours with contemporary finesse and visual storytelling. His menus are immersive and evocative — turning time-honoured recipes into bold, beautifully plated experiences that connect culture, memory, and modernity.

From 13 to 16 August 2025, guests will be invited to experience a rare showcase of Latin-Mexican cuisine — a genre not often explored at this level of refinement in the city’s luxury hospitality scene. In what promises to be a standout moment for Colombo’s evolving food culture, NH Collection Colombo positions itself at the forefront of experience-led gastronomy with this exclusive collaboration.

Crafted exclusively for NH Collection Colombo, Chef Jimmy López’s menu is a dynamic showcase of flavour, fire, and finesse — a culinary narrative that traverses continents with bold sophistication. Each dish is a conversation between cultures: earthy Creamy Mushroom Soup infused with Truffle & Porcini, briny depths captured in a refined New England Clam & Shellfish Chowder, and the comfort of Italian indulgence reimagined in Penne alla Vodka and Pistachio Pesto Penne topped with Sous Vide Salmon.

Latin vibrancy comes alive through Braised Lamb Tacos, Grilled Hanger Steak with Chimichurri Verde, and a Mexican-style Seafood Cocktail bursting with citrus and spice. From the subtle heat of Sous Vide Jamaican Jerk Chicken to the theatrical sweetness of Miso-glazed Pineapple finished by torch, the menu dances between restraint and boldness. With chilled contrasts like Classic Andaluz Gazpacho and a refreshing Cucumber Verde, the experience is designed to awaken the senses and ignite curiosity. Complemented by live stations and rare pairings, this is not just a dinner — it is a momentous culinary immersion, crafted by a chef whose global journey is plated with precision, soul, and storytelling.

This event marks a significant step in NH Collection Colombo’s journey to curate experience-led dining that engages the senses and sparks cultural connection. In collaboration with Chef López, the hotel is crafting a culinary series unlike anything Colombo’s fine dining audience has seen in recent memory, where each evening offers more than a meal, but a narrative brought to life through flavour.

“We believe it’s time to reshape Colombo’s culinary rhythm,” said Yann Decaix, General Manager of NH Collection Colombo. “Our vision is to move beyond menus and introduce curated experiences that leave a lasting impression. Chef Jimmy López embodies everything we champion at NH Collection Colombo —assion, authenticity, and creative finesse. This residency sets the tone for what’s next: globally inspired gastronomy, rooted in story and elevated in execution”

09/08/2025

Travel often feels like an experience reserved for those with deep pockets and plenty of time. But for Sri Lankan couple Tharika and Dilan, travel is something much simpler and more inclusive: an opportunity to discover the beauty around us, without breaking the bank.

With nothing more than a smartphone and a shared passion for exploration, this couple has carved a unique space on TikTok with their handle , helping thousands of Sri Lankans see that the magic of travel is not in lavish expenses, but in curiosity, authenticity, and local adventure.

Their story is not about exotic destinations or luxury resorts, but about the hidden waterfalls, peaceful hikes, affordable guesthouses, and local street foods that make Sri Lanka special and accessible. And through TikTok, they’re turning this vision into reality for a growing community of budget travelers.

The Roots of a Shared Adventure

Before TikTok and the travel videos, Tharika and Dilan were just two people with a curiosity for the road less traveled. They didn’t come from the travel industry, nor did they set out with plans to become influencers. Their journey began quietly, born from a shared love for discovering the places others might overlook. “We just loved to find the spots that aren’t on the usual map — places where you can relax, enjoy nature, and experience real Sri Lanka.”, they say.
What started as weekend excursions soon turned into a mission. They began documenting their travels not for fame, but to keep memories and share tips with friends and family. Slowly, this evolved into content - sharing their discoveries with the world.
The appeal was clear: for many, expensive trips are out of reach, but the desire to explore is universal.

The Care Behind Every Recommendation

What separates Tharika and Dilan from many travel creators is their commitment to authenticity and responsibility. They don’t just share photos or second-hand tips; they personally visit each place they feature.

This means thorough research and on-the-ground exploration: checking room conditions at guesthouses, tasting the local food themselves, confirming prices, and talking to owners and locals to get the full picture.

“Our viewers trust us to give them honest advice,” says Tharika. “We take that seriously. If a place isn’t good, we don’t recommend it, no matter how picturesque it looks online.”

This dedication has helped them build a reputation as reliable voices in the budget travel space, turning casual viewers into loyal followers.

Why TikTok? A Platform Built for Authenticity

When it came the time to share their experiences with a wider audience, Tharika and Dilan chose TikTok for its unique advantages. Unlike other platforms that often favour polished, high-budget content, TikTok celebrates authentic moments, raw creativity, and quick, relatable storytelling.

“TikTok felt like the perfect place to share quick, honest travel tips,” Dilan explains. “It’s where people come to learn and be inspired, not to be overwhelmed.” Their videos, often under a minute, capture the essence of each location: the sound of rushing water at a waterfall, the sizzle of street food on a grill, the laughter shared on a nature trail.

The platform's format allowed them to connect instantly with viewers who wanted practical budget options, not just pretty pictures. And it gave them the freedom to experiment, try new storytelling styles, and respond directly to their audience.

A key reason behind their success is how accessible and versatile TikTok is. With just their phones and the platform’s intuitive in-app editing tools, they can easily film, trim, and polish videos on the go, sharing fresh and engaging content whenever inspiration strikes. The extensive library of sounds, effects, and trending music helps them add atmosphere and personality, transforming simple clips into immersive stories that resonate deeply with their audience.

Beyond creation, TikTok’s community features encourage meaningful interaction — from comments and duets to direct engagement — fostering a close-knit following that feels less like an audience and more like a supportive community. Coupled with TikTok’s hashtag system and discoverability tools, their content reaches people genuinely interested in budget travel and Sri Lanka’s hidden gems, amplifying their impact far beyond what they might achieve elsewhere. In this way, TikTok isn’t just a stage for their adventures but a creative partner that enables them to connect, inspire, and grow every day.

In this way, TikTok isn’t just a stage for their adventures but a creative partner enabling them to connect, inspire, and grow every day.

Looking Forward: Creating a Budget Traveler’s Hub

Inspired by their growing following, Tharika and Dilan are now developing a hotel booking platform aimed specifically at budget travelers in Sri Lanka.

“Our goal is to make travel planning easier and more accessible,” says Dilan. “We want to help people find affordable, trustworthy accommodation without the guesswork.” This new venture reflects their broader mission: to make travel within Sri Lanka something everyone can enjoy, no matter their budget.

Tharika and Dilan’s story challenges the notion that meaningful travel requires lavish spending or distant destinations. Through their content, they show that adventure can be simple, affordable, and deeply rewarding. They remind us that the true value of travel lies in curiosity, connection, and the courage to explore, not in the size of your wallet.

As they continue to inspire thousands on TikTok and beyond, their message is clear: the beauty of Sri Lanka belongs to all of us, and with the right guidance, anyone can discover it.

The Bar Champs 2025 Grand Finale concluded on a high note at The Hotel Show Colombo, celebrating creativity, craftsmanship, and the next generation of Sri Lanka’s bartending talent. Powered by Rockland Distilleries in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Hospitality Graduates Association (SLHGA), the 5th annual edition of the island’s premier bartending competition showcased an inspiring display of creativity and skill.

This year’s competition saw over 170 aspiring bartenders trained through island-wide workshops and regional rounds held across six major cities. After months of intense preparation and mentoring, six finalists competed in the highly anticipated finale on 30 July 2025, where their artistry and technique were judged by a panel of respected industry leaders and award-winning mixology experts.

Akash Rajapaksha, representing Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, was crowned the winner of Bar Champs 2025, delivering an exceptional performance that impressed both judges and audiences alike. Chehan Prabod from Marriott Bay Resort & Spa Weligama secured second place, while the third place was jointly awarded to Oshadi Raini of Amaya Lake Dambulla and Sahan Prabodha from Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort, following a tightly contested round.
The competition also proudly featured talented finalists Dinujaya Rashmi from Cinnamon Life Colombo and Buvani Welagedara of Earl’s Regency, both of whom demonstrated impressive skill and professionalism throughout the event.

The panel of judges for this year’s finale included Trevin Gomez, Chairman of The Hotel Show Colombo 2025; Don Ranasinghe, co-owner of Asia’s Top 14 Bars Smoke & Bitters; and Graham Merricks, Head of International Sales at Rockland Distilleries. They were joined by expert mixologists James Martil, Ashendra Hirdaramani, and Mevan Karunaratne, who brought their expertise and discerning palates to the judging process.

Dilmini Weragama, Group CEO of Rockland Distilleries, praised the competition's impact, stating, “Bar Champs is more than a competition — it’s a platform to nurture talent and uplift Sri Lanka’s beverage and hospitality industries. We are proud to be a catalyst in this movement.”

Trevin Gomez, Chairman of The Hotel Show Colombo 2025, highlighted the evolving nature of the bartending profession: “The bar is fast becoming a stage for storytelling, and this year’s finalists told some incredible ones through flavour, technique, and flair. It was an honour to host this vibrant celebration of talent and innovation.”

Patrick Pereira, President of the Sri Lanka Hospitality Graduates Association, noted the broader impact of the initiative: “We are committed to building the future of Sri Lankan hospitality, and Bar Champs is a clear example of how collaboration between education, industry, and mentorship can unlock remarkable potential. These bartenders are the future.”

Bar Champs continues to play a vital role in raising the standard of mixology in Sri Lanka by empowering the next generation of professionals with world-class training, exposure, and opportunity. As the industry evolves, initiatives like this serve as a cornerstone in shaping a modern, skilled, and globally competitive hospitality workforce.

Lasantha De Fonseka, visionary entrepreneur and founder of Tiesh Sri Lanka, has officially launched his memoir, ‘The Story Behind the Sparkle’, the translated copy of its Sinhalese version, “Minipetha Mudunata Didulana Gamanak” written by Sujith Akkarawaththa.

The book chronicles the extraordinary life, challenges, and triumphs of one of Sri Lanka’s most inspiring business figures, sharing the untold story behind the iconic jewellery brand Tiesh.

With a legacy spanning over two decades, Lasantha’s journey is as multifaceted as the gemstones he passionately promotes. From humble beginnings in a lower-middle-class household raised by a single mother, to becoming the driving force behind one of Sri Lanka’s largest and most prestigious jewellery houses, his story is one of grit, vision, and relentless dedication.

Before venturing into entrepreneurship, Lasantha began his career at the Ceylon To***co Company. In 1978, amid the CMU Strike, he found himself at a crossroads that would define his future. “I had to make a life-changing decision — return to the safety of my role at Ceylon To***co or take the leap into the unknown,” Lasantha recalls. Choosing the latter, he embarked on his entrepreneurial journey, founding Tiesh with a loan of just Rs. 100,000 from Bank of Ceylon.

Today, Tiesh stands as a symbol of innovation, authenticity, and Sri Lankan excellence in jewellery. Launched initially as Lakmini Ltd. in 1997, the brand has evolved into Tiesh, operating from its landmark location at No. 676, Peradeniya Road, Kandy — now home to Sri Lanka’s largest Gems and Jewellery Emporium under one roof. In 2016, the unveiling of the Gallery of Sapphires further cemented Tiesh’s status as the largest showroom in the country, catering to walk-in customers, tourists, and gem connoisseurs alike.

“Tiesh Sri Lanka is more than just a jewellery house — it is a purveyor of contemporary design and an educational destination,” Lasantha said. “Our showrooms in Colombo and Kandy are equipped with a gemological museum, testing laboratory, auditorium, and jewellery workshop. We provide an immersive experience into the intricate art of jewellery craftsmanship, especially highlighting the beauty of Sri Lankan gemstones in their natural form.”

What sets Lasantha’s journey apart is his belief in learning from those around him — particularly his employees — and his value on passion, perseverance, and integrity. “Success does not come overnight. It takes consistent effort, openness to learning, and the courage to take risks,” he shares.

‘The Story Behind the Sparkle’ offers rare insight into the world of fine jewellery — an industry often reserved for generational players — through the lens of a self-made entrepreneur. The memoir is not just a personal story; it reflects Sri Lanka’s evolving business landscape, showcasing how hard work and heart can forge dreams into brilliance.

The memoir is now available in English and Sinhala and can be purchased at leading bookstores across the island, online platforms, or by contacting 0774 381 692.

South Asia’s longest-running concert for children, the Country Roads Concert, is set to return for its landmark 37th edition this October. Organized by the Country Music Foundation (CMF), the annual event has, for nearly four decades, brought together music lovers and philanthropists in a united effort to uplift the lives of underprivileged children across Sri Lanka.

Reflecting on the concert’s many milestones, CMF President and Founder Feizal Samath shared memorable highlights, including the 25th anniversary partnership with UNICEF to retrofit courtrooms and make them child-safe, as well as the Rs. 500,000 donation made in 2014 to Save the Children Sri Lanka for mother-and-child programs on plantation estates. He also recalled the distribution of hundreds of mosquito nets to schoolchildren in Monaragala—just one of the many grassroots efforts supported by CMF over the years.

Feizal emphasized that the concert’s longevity is owed in large part to its dedicated fanbase, which has supported the event through the years. "Even as we host this year’s concert at the fabulous Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams, one of Colombo’s most iconic venues, we’ve ensured that ticket prices remain accessible, starting at just Rs. 3,000. We want true country music fans to enjoy this experience without breaking the bank."

This year, CMF also pays tribute to Ramesh de Silva, a creative force who has quietly shaped the concert’s communications for over 15 years. As the founder of boutique ad agency Firefly, Ramesh has selflessly contributed his time, creativity, and weekends to CMF’s mission—developing impactful campaigns that resonate deeply with the organization’s core values of compassion and service to children.

An award-winning advertising professional, Ramesh's accolades include recognition at Cannes Lions (Finalist, 2008), a Silver at Asia’s ADFEST, a Bronze at Ireland’s Kinsale Shark Awards, and two Bronze Effies. His creative portfolio, which can be viewed at thefireflynext.wordpress.com, stands as a testament to his commitment to both craft and cause.

As the Country Roads Concert prepares for another unforgettable edition, CMF remains steadfast in its mission: bringing people together through music to create a better world for children.

This year's Country Roads concert for children is being held on Sunday, October 19 (from 7pm onwards) at The Forum at Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams.
