From the Road to New Opportunities: Motorcyclists Embrace Scholarship Program

For years, many young Liberians have relied on commercial motorcycling as a means of survival, navigating difficult roads daily to support themselves and their families. Today, for several riders across the country, that journey is taking a new direction.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has unveiled a scholarship list for motorcyclists to attend the Monrovia Vocational Training Center (MVTC), providing beneficiaries with an opportunity to acquire technical and vocational skills that can open doors beyond the transport sector.

The initiative aims to empower young people through education and skills development, helping them build sustainable livelihoods and expand their career prospects. For many of the selected riders, the scholarship represents more than training—it is a chance to transform their future.

As beneficiaries prepare to begin their studies, the program reflects ongoing efforts to invest in youth development and create pathways to economic empowerment.

For these motorcyclists, the road ahead is no longer defined only by the miles they travel, but by the opportunities that await them.

Students & Education Observers Raise Concern Over Science Teacher Shortage in Grand Kru

By Staff Writer

Senior high school students and education observers in Grand Kru County are expressing concern over what they describe as a shortage of qualified science teachers, particularly in Physics, in some schools across the county.

According to several students who spoke on condition of anonymity, the lack of consistent Physics instruction has made it difficult for many learners to adequately prepare for national examinations and pursue science-related studies at higher institutions.

The concern resurfaced following the commencement of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), where Physics was the first subject administered to candidates on June 1, 2026.

Education observers and community members told this reporter that some schools have faced challenges in maintaining qualified science instructors over the years. They noted that the situation has contributed to gaps in science education, especially in Physics and other related subjects.

Observers cited Barclayville Central High School as one of the institutions affected by the challenge, noting that the school has reportedly experienced difficulties in securing a dedicated Physics teacher since the departure of former instructor George Toh, who now teaches at Sasstown High School.

Students who spoke to this newspaper said they often rely on self-study, classmates, and limited classroom instruction to prepare for science examinations. They called for additional support and the deployment of qualified science teachers to schools across the county.

Education stakeholders believe strengthening science education will help improve students' performance in national examinations and increase their chances of pursuing science-related disciplines at colleges and universities.

Efforts to obtain comments from local education authorities were unsuccessful prior to publication. However, stakeholders continue to call for increased investment in science education and the recruitment of qualified teachers to address the reported gaps.

Gbanken Mayoress Raises Concern Over Safe Drinking Water Shortage in District #1, Grand Kru

By Leo Heinz Wreh
Reporter

The Mayoress of Gbanken City, District #1, Grand Kru, Esther Plee, has raised concerns over the lack of access to safe drinking water in the city, calling for the rehabilitation of damaged hand pumps and the construction of additional water facilities.

Speaking to Verity Online News on June 1, 2026, Madam Plee said Gbanken, which comprises about five zones, currently has only two functional hand pumps serving its growing population. She noted that many residents are forced to rely on wells and other unsafe water sources for their daily needs.

According to the mayoress, at least four hand pumps in the city are damaged and require urgent rehabilitation. She warned that the shortage of safe drinking water poses serious health risks to residents, especially children and other vulnerable groups.

Madam Plee is appealing to the Government of Liberia, humanitarian organizations, and development partners to intervene by repairing the damaged pumps and constructing additional hand pumps to improve access to safe drinking water in the city.

She said access to clean water remains a basic necessity and is critical to protecting the health and well-being of residents.

47 Grand Kru Citizens Compete for Yellow Machine Operator Jobs Ahead of Equipment Deployment

By Staff Writer

Forty-seven citizens of Grand Kru County have taken part in operator competency testing as the Government of Liberia prepares to deploy 285 pieces of road construction equipment across the country.

The assessment, held in Maryland County on June 1, 2026, was designed to identify qualified individuals who will operate the heavy-duty machinery expected to support road construction and maintenance activities in Grand Kru and other counties.

The exercise represents a significant employment opportunity for local residents, with successful applicants expected to play a direct role in improving road infrastructure within the county.

Officials say the recruitment and testing process aims to ensure that trained and competent operators are available to manage the equipment once it is distributed.

The planned deployment of the yellow machines has generated excitement among residents, many of whom see the initiative as a major step toward addressing long-standing road challenges that affect transportation, trade, healthcare access, and education.

Community members have also welcomed the government's decision to involve local citizens in the process, noting that it will create jobs while building a skilled workforce capable of supporting future development projects.

As authorities conclude the testing phase, residents are now awaiting the announcement of successful candidates and the arrival of the equipment, which is expected to contribute to improved road connectivity and economic growth in Grand Kru County.

The Southeastern Corridor is once again slipping into a state of serious deterioration, threatening the lives and livelihoods of thousands of Liberians who depend on this critical highway.

The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Public Works, must take immediate and decisive action to address the worsening condition of the road before it becomes completely impassable.

This is not merely an infrastructure issue; it is a matter of public safety, economic growth, and national development. Continued neglect will only deepen the hardships faced by citizens and businesses across the southeastern region.

The time to act is now. Preventive intervention today will save lives, reduce costs, and avert the severe consequences of another transportation crisis.

PUBLIC NOTICE | WASSCE CANDIDATE NUMBERS

The Ministry of Education has received reports that some schools are withholding WASSCE candidate numbers and examination information from students because of unpaid tuition or other school-related fees.

The Ministry wishes to make clear that this practice violates Ministry policy. No school is permitted to deny, delay, withhold, or obstruct a student’s participation in any WAEC-administered examination because of unpaid tuition, arrears, graduation fees, registration fees, or any other financial obligation.

With the WASSCE examination scheduled to begin on Monday, June 1, 2026, and schools closing ahead of the examination period, all schools currently withholding candidate numbers or examination information are directed to immediately release such information to eligible students.

Any school found violating this directive will face administrative sanctions, including fines, suspension of operational privileges, revocation of operational permits, and further action where necessary.

Parents, guardians, and students are encouraged to immediately report any school refusing to release candidate numbers or preventing students from sitting the examination through their District Education Officer (DEO), County Education Officer (CEO), Our Social Media DMs, the Ministry hotline (0777-212-197), the Bureau of Basic and Secondary Education, or the nearest Ministry office.

The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that no student is denied the opportunity to sit a national examination because of financial challenges.

Koffa Calls for Merit-Based Appointments, Highlights Employment Opportunities for Grand Kru Citizens

By Staff Writer

Monrovia, Liberia — Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Cllr Jonathan Fonati Koffa has underscored the importance of merit, education, and professional competence in public service appointments, cautioning against the expectation that political loyalty alone should guarantee government jobs.

Addressing concerns often raised by political supporters seeking appointments, Representative Koffa stressed that aspiring public servants must equip themselves with the necessary academic qualifications and practical skills required for the positions they seek.

According to him, while political participation and campaign sacrifices are valuable, they should not replace competence and preparedness in the appointment process.

"It would be unfair to the country and the counties we represent to appoint individuals who are not qualified simply because they participated in a political campaign," Koffa noted. "Young people must prepare themselves academically and practically for the opportunities they hope to obtain."

The former Speaker, however, pointed to his record of providing employment opportunities to citizens of Grand Kru County during his time in public office. He disclosed that Grand Kru citizens constituted the overwhelming majority of staff members in his office and among those employed through his leadership at the Capitol.

The Grand Kru County lawmaker stated that approximately 90 percent of employees in his office were from Grand Kru County, describing the effort as part of his commitment to creating opportunities for qualified citizens from his home county.

He further encouraged young people to pursue education, vocational training, and professional development, emphasizing that these investments remain essential for success in both public and private sector careers.

His comments come as discussions continue across Liberia regarding youth employment, political expectations, and the need to strengthen merit-based recruitment within government institutions.
