Flooding Hits Several Communities in Montserrado District # 2 as Residents Cry for Urgent Help

Montserrado, Liberia—August 19, 2026_
Residents of several communities in District #2, Montserrado County, are calling for urgent assistance after heavy overnight rainfall caused severe flooding leaving families displaced and disrupting daily activities.

Many residents were forced to move their belongings from flooded homes in search of temporary shelter, while rising water levels have prevented schoolchildren from attending classes and made it difficult for workers and motorcyclists to move around the affected communities.

Some residents have resorted to paying young men to help them cross the flooded areas in order to access their workplaces and conduct their daily businesses.

The situation has also sparked criticism of local authorities. Residents are calling on District #2 lawmaker Hon. Sekou S. Kanneh to take action against the alleged blockage of major drainage systems across the district.

They specifically cited the major waterway in the Peace Island community, which they allege has been blocked by a cement and steel company, worsening the flooding situation.

One resident told the media that flooding has become increasingly severe, saying communities now experience major flooding after relatively short periods of rainfall.

Residents are appealing to the Government of Liberia, particularly the Environmental Protection Agency, disaster management authorities, humanitarian organizations, and philanthropists to urgently intervene and provide relief to affected families.

“Her Voice, Her Future” Health Clubs to Be Launched in 50 Schools Across Five Counties by First Lady’s Office

Buchanan, Grand Bassa—August 19, 2026_
The Office of the First Lady of Liberia is set to launch the “Her Voice, Her Future” Adolescent Reproductive Health Clubs in 50 schools across five counties, with Grand Bassa County among the first beneficiaries.

Mr. Varfee Holmes, Media and Communications Consultant at the Office of the First Lady, said Grand Bassa was selected as one of the five counties for the initiative.

Speaking during the first day of a two-day workshop held in Buchanan, Holmes said the program aims to empower adolescent girls with essential reproductive health knowledge and encourage peer education in schools.

Participants will be trained as peer educators and are expected to share the knowledge gained with fellow students in their respective schools.
Holmes noted that Grand Bassa has been identified as one of the counties experiencing a high rate of teenage pregnancy, stressing the need for increased awareness and education among adolescents.

“To reduce this, we have to teach them about health and how they can take care of themselves,” Holmes said.

The initiative is being sponsored by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and is intended to promote informed decision-making, health awareness, and empowerment among adolescent girls in Liberia.

Liberian Government Through Commerce Ministry Advances Implementation of Liberia Trade Information Portal (LTIP) Project

By: Jacob Gardea

Monrovia, Liberia—August 19, 2026_
The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), in collaboration with the Liberia Investment, Finance and Trade Project (LIFT-P) and with support from the World Bank, has begun implementing the Liberia Trade Information Portal (LTIP) project.

The initiative is aimed at modernizing Liberia’s trade environment and making essential trade information more accessible to businesses, traders, investors, importers, exporters, and the general public.

The LTIP will provide a centralized online platform containing reliable and up-to-date information on trade laws, regulations, procedures, fees, forms, licenses, permits, approvals, and other requirements governing commercial activities in Liberia.

As part of the implementation, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, together with ECORYS UK Limited and its partner, Tribe, is engaging relevant government ministries, agencies, commissions, and other key stakeholders involved in trade regulation and facilitation.

The initiative is expected to improve transparency, simplify trade procedures, reduce the time and cost of doing business, and strengthen trade facilitation across Liberia.

The portal will also help close information gaps and make it easier for businesses, particularly Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), to understand and comply with Liberia’s trade and regulatory requirements.

Ultimately, the LTIP is expected to contribute to a more transparent, predictable, efficient, and business-friendly trade environment, while supporting Liberia’s broader economic transformation agenda and promoting investment, trade, and sustainable economic growth.

President Boakai Signs Cybercrime and Data Protection Laws to Strengthen Liberia’s Digital Security

Monrovia, Liberia—August 19, 2026_
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has signed the Cybercrime Act and Data Protection Act into law, marking a major step toward combating cybercrime, protecting personal information, and strengthening security across Liberia’s growing digital space.

Minister Sekou M. Kromah disclosed the signing on Wednesday, August 19, during a ceremony marking the adoption of new Satellite Communications Guidelines by the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA).

The two laws established a stronger legal framework to combat cybercrime, digital fraud, unauthorized system access, and misuse of personal data and other technology-related threats.

Minister Kromah said the new laws come at a critical time as Liberia expands digital technology, describing them as a major step toward protecting citizens, institutions, and national systems from growing cyber threats.

The Cybercrime Act will strengthen Liberia’s efforts to prevent and prosecute cyber offenses, while the Data Protection Act will safeguard citizens’ personal information and promote responsible data use.

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications says the laws will boost public confidence in digital services and strengthen Liberia’s digital economy. Minister Kromah also called for greater collaboration among government, private sector, and other stakeholders to address cybersecurity challenges.

Meanwhile, the government has adopted new Satellite Communications Guidelines to expand connectivity and improve access to communication services in underserved communities. The Ministry says the measures are part of efforts to build a secure and inclusive digital environment in Liberia.

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has pledged to work with relevant institutions and stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the new laws while educating citizens about their rights and responsibilities in the digital space.
