Prominent Nimba Activist Rubbishes Senator Twayenโ€™s Anti-ArcelorMittal Rants
Yekepa, Nimba County โ€“ June 11, 2025

A respected activist in Nimba County, Armstrong Gobac Selekpoh, has strongly dismissed recent attacks against ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) by Senator Nya Twayen, labeling them as dishonest, misleading, and rooted in personal political insecurity rather than facts.

Senator Twayen on Tuesday convened a press conference to question the value of ArcelorMittalโ€™s investment in Liberia, accusing the company of failing to meet its obligations under the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA). His comments come just days after President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and ArcelorMittal Executive Chairman Mr. Lakshmi N. Mittal officially dedicated West Africaโ€™s first iron ore concentrator in Tokadeh, Nimba County.

The $2 billion Phase II expansion project includes extensive investments in railway and port infrastructure, ore processing, training, and job creation. It is expected to generate about 5,000 local jobs during its peak and position Liberia as a key iron ore processing hub in the region.

But in a sharp rebuttal, activist Selekpoh accused Senator Twayen of deliberately ignoring these accomplishments.

โ€œSenator Twayen is being dishonest and deceitful. He failed to mention that ArcelorMittal has already fulfilled 14 out of 21 commitments under the MDA. This includes the full rehabilitation of the 243 km railway, the operationalization of the Buchanan Port, and the rehabilitation and expansion of the Vocational Training Center,โ€ Selekpoh stated.

He outlined AMLโ€™s achievements, including:

Storage of documentation and regular reporting

Meeting or exceeding employment quotas

Secondment of government staff

Awarding 99 advanced scholarships, with 46% of recipients having graduated

Enrollment of over 1,080 dependents in AML-supported schools

Payment of more than $424 million in taxes and royalties

Respect for human rights and adherence to Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR)

Investments in clinics and hospitals

Commercial mining operations since 2011

Maintenance of the concession area despite encroachments

Selekpoh also highlighted six commitments that have been substantially fulfilled, including:

Regular quarterly and annual reporting

Mining of 48.9 million tons of iron ore (concentrate operations not yet started)

58% procurement from Liberian vendors

Adequate but improvable medical care

On-the-job overseas training for 54 employees

Continued educational support and school infrastructure upgrades

He noted that AMLโ€™s environmental management commitment, the only one still in progress, includes 40 quarterly reports submitted to the EPA, the planting of 150,000 indigenous trees, 25 signed conservation agreements, and ongoing biodiversity and waste management efforts across Nimba.

โ€œWe are not saying that people should not criticize AML. But no serious senator who wants development for his people would dismiss such an enormous investment as worthless,โ€ Selekpoh asserted.

He accused Senator Twayen of political desperation, saying his recent comments are motivated by a fear of growing public support for Nimba Superintendent Nelson Korquoi.

โ€œNya sees the current Superintendent as a threat to his Senate seat. The Superintendent has been engaging citizens to ensure their voices are reflected in the new MDA. Thatโ€™s whatโ€™s making Nya uncomfortable. And so, instead of contributing meaningfully, heโ€™s attacking the company,โ€ he said.

Selekpoh further recalled that during his time with NASSCORP, Senator Twayen never supported any student organization or community initiative tied to concessions.

โ€œIn July 2013, Nya defended the governmentโ€™s seizure of the Nimba County Social Development Fund to pay for damages caused by protests. At the time, he was at NASSCORP milking free money and didnโ€™t care about the people,โ€ Selekpoh charged.

He also slammed Twayenโ€™s lack of support for AMLโ€™s employment and training programs, which are benefiting thousands of Nimbaians.

โ€œAML just conducted aptitude testing for nearly 1,000 youths in fenceline communities. Based on those results, some will be admitted to the Vocational Training Center, 80+ are being processed for the Advanced Driving Training program, and over 150 are being recruited for jobs that were once hard to access.โ€

In response to Twayenโ€™s suggestion that AML's presence is a burden, Selekpoh asked pointedly:

โ€œWho will give $50,000 annually to support Nimba University when ArcelorMittal leaves?โ€

He added that in the last year alone, AML has facilitated overseas medical treatment for more than 10 of its employees, providing access to critical care that is currently unavailable in Liberia.

Selekpoh concluded by calling on Nimba citizens and national leaders to stand behind initiatives that promote development, rather than undermine them for personal political gain.

( Capitol Hill, Monrovia, June 10, 2025); The Plenary of the Liberian Senate has mandated its committee on Labor to streamline the list of work permits submitted to the Senate by Labor Minister, Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah.

Plenary decision resulted from a heated debate on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, surrounding the issuance of work permits to non-Liberians by the Ministry of Labor.

The Senate has since mandated its Committee on Labor, chaired by Grand Gedeh County Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely, to comprehensively scrutinize the categorization and issuance process of work permits across the country.

Presenting a report on the current status of work permits, Senator Nimely revealed that a total of 10,117 work permits were issued under the leadership of Labor Minister Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah.

Of this number, 7,633 permits representing (75%) were renewals, while 2,484 representing (25%) were newly issued.

Senator Nimely emphasized that the unchecked issuance of work permits has serious implications for employment opportunities available to Liberians and called for urgent action to safeguard local jobs.

Senator Abraham Darius Dillon of Montserrado County, who initially raised the issue of work permits, contended that permits should not be viewed as a tool for revenue generation but rather as a regulatory measure to prevent non-Liberians from occupying jobs that qualified Liberians can perform.

He further criticized Labor Minister Cllr. Kruah for failing to include job categories in his report and recommended that the Minister be held in contempt and faces a vote of no confidence.

Senator Dillon at the same time cited disparities in labor conditions, further highlighting a specific case of Western Cluster, where 600 Liberians and 300 non-Liberians served as truck drivers under vastly different pay scales with Liberians earning $1000, while non-Liberians earned up to $5,000 as monthly salary for the same work.

The Montserrado County Legislator also argued that there are lot of disadvantages of issuing work permits to non-Liberians when Liberians are capable to do these jobs, stating โ€œ it reduces employment opportunities for qualified Liberians, specifically in sectors where local skills are available but overlooked in favor of foreign Labor. Foreign workers often receive higher salaries for the same roles being performed by Liberians, leading to unfair labor practicesโ€.

He maintained that without strict regulations and job categorization, some employers will misuse work permits to bring in foreign labor for low-skilled jobs that Liberians can easily perform.

Senator Dillon acknowledged that when work permits become a major source of Revenue generation, the issuance process may prioritize income generation over national employment policy, leading to uncontrolled inflow of foreign labor.

Senator Wellington Geevon Smith of Rivercess County agreed with Senator Nimely and underscored the importance of minimizing work permits fees to avoid creating a system that deprives Liberians of employment.

Senator Smith noted that the current setup essentially incentivizes the hiring of foreign labor, which he said runs contrary to the Senateโ€™s objectives.

Senator Bill Twehway of Rivercess County took a stronger stance, proposing that the cost of obtaining a work permit for non-Liberian be significantly increased from the current $ 1000 USD to $ 5000.

According to him, this increase would serve as a deterrent to discourage the influx of foreign workers taking on jobs that Liberians are qualified to do.

Senator Dabah M. Varpilah of Grand Cape Mount County called on the Committee to revisit and clearly identify job sectors in which Liberians are fully capable of serving, stating that priority must be given for Liberians to be employed.
Senator Augustine Chea of Sinoe County went further by acknowledging that in some supermarkets, foreign nationals are granted work permits for roles basically like standing over cashiers, which he described as an abuse of the system.

Following the extensive deliberations, Plenary endorsed a motion proffered by Senator Joseph Jallah of Lofa County mandating the Committee on Labor to streamline the List submitted with the aims of categorizing the jobs that the Ministry of Labor should issue permits for and report to the Senateโ€™s Plenary within two weeks.

Inaugural Address Delivered:
Fabius A. McCormack โ€“ President
Grand Bassa University Student Union Government
June 6, 2025

Greetings Everyone โ€ฆ!!!

Hon. Pro-temp of the Liberian Senate, Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, the Honorable Chairman, Gbehzohngar Milton Findley and members of the Grand Bassa Legislative Caucus, Honorable Superintendent, Karyou Johnson and Leaders of the County Administration, the GBU Board of Trustees, the Chief Executive Officer and Interim President of the Grand Bassa University, Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves along with the Administrative and Instructional staff; the Honorable Cllr. Mrs. Charlyn M. Brumskine-Dennis, the indomitable and progressive Student Party for Justice (SPJ), fellow Presidents of various Universities in Liberia, the Interim Student Union Government, Alumni and Students of GBU; Leadership and members of the Student Unification Party, my parents, Mr. Benjamin McCormack & Elizabeth M. Doegar, our dear family and friends who have traveled from all corners of Liberia to be with us on this occasion, members of the PRESS, distinguished ladies and gentlemen; we are honored to greet and thank you all for your presence here today.

We would like to extend thanks to the Government of Liberia on behalf of the Grand Bassa University, for their consistent support to our Institution throughout its 17 years of existence.

The significance of GBU cannot be overstated; a place where we are learning the lessons of the past, while setting our sights on the future. Thatโ€™s why it is important to recognize the priceless advocacy efforts of the Youth Leaders and Stakeholders who made this Vision a reality 17 years ago.

Distinguished Leaders and citizens, reflecting on our journey that landed us at this point of celebration, it is only essential to appreciate God for his enormous blessings, and also wholeheartedly applaud all those who supported our quest for Leadership including the Student Party for Justice headed by Cadre Prophet Abraham King-Jones as well as the students who braved the storm and made numerous sacrifices just to see us being elected. Truly, our Leadership is grateful.

Our Administration is more cognizant that to succeed, we must utilize the tools of reconciliation and foster collective working relationship among our colleagues irrespective of their political or personal alignment. It is on this basis that we would like to extend an Olive Branch to our friends in the Student Unification Party to join us in serving the Student community.

To the students of GBU, election is over and it is time to focus on the common good of the student community and our noble University by using our energy to โ€œLight The Candleโ€ together. Therefore, I call on all of you to join me as your President to promote peace and transformation, instead of disunity, propaganda and violence.
Fellow citizens, we are quite aware of the huge responsibilities that accompany the authority that has been bestowed upon us; that is why we attach extraordinary significance with a commitment not to disappoint our Colleagues, the Administration and all those who believe in our Leadership.

Bearing such in mind, we are reminded each day that we campaigned on the platform of transformation under the RASP Agenda which includes; Representation, Advocacy, Sustainability and Professional Development. Be assured that our Government will explore all the possible channels to achieve these Goals for the benefit of the students and our University.

Distinguished County and National Leaders, the GBU Administration, fellow students; as a way of demonstrating our eagerness to serve you diligently with impacts, our Leadership has held couple of engagements with the County Administration through the office of the Superintendent as well as the University Authorities, students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Following these engagements, we are proud to announce that there are dependable prospects for the University and its Students- ranging from the Skill enhancement training, improvement of our facilities and inclusion of the Student Union Government in all decision-making gatherings.

Our esteemed students, we are also glad to report that through a proactive engagement with the leadership of Dr. Reeves, the students are now represented on almost 70% of the different committees at the University; an opportunity that has placed our leadership on the decision-making table.

As you may be aware, the Paynesberry campus of the University has experienced major installation of solar light in a huge quantity to enhance the electricity and security on campus; a goal that is being achieved as a result of our advocacy with the interim leadership of Dr. Reeves of which a targeted amount of solar lights needed are 250pcs that will run from our bridge and the surroundings of our campus.

Beyond advocacy, there is an ongoing crafting of Framework that will govern the implementation of all programs and development activities under our guidance; and such instrument will be unveiled before the end of 100 Days in Office, some of which are;
The establishment of the Grand Bassa University Beautification team to be guided by a policy.
Sitting capacity / Student Park within the surroundings of our campus.
A modern structured momentum of our university logo to be constructed at the entrance of our campus.
Professional and public speaking skills training within our university.
Our leadership is working closely with the studentโ€™s affairs office through advocacy for a balance tuition fees in all colleges of our university, and we urge every students to remain peaceful and civil as our leadership continue to advocate for the reduction of tuition fees since it has escalated in recent time.

Distinguished Leaders, while we are more focused on transformation, our leadership has placed accountability and transparency at the topmost part of our AGENDA; a commitment that we vow to uphold.

Particularly, we want to use this opportunity to thank the Government of Liberia for the ongoing work solely for the completion of the GBU Bridge of which our leadership have been involved with some engagements through the interim administration, to the Pro-temp of the Liberian Senate, Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, a project that is so much of a high treasure, not only to the Students and Faculty, but also the people of Grand Bassa County.

While we are here to celebrate, it is also key to remind our President- His Excellency Joseph Nyumah Boakai, our Grand Bassa Lawmakers, Ministers and County Officials including our Development Partners including ArcelorMittal Liberia who have diligently supported our university from stretch to where we are now, LAC, EPO and others; that the Grand Bassa University is the biggest source of Manpower Liberia is heavily relying on to contribute to nation building in both the Public and Private Sectors.

With this, it would require all of you joint and consistent support through budgetary allotment and support to student related programs; but more to that, it calls for intentional efforts to prioritize employment opportunities for graduates and other young Liberians.

To Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves and his Administrative team, please be assured that the Student Union Government is here to support the overall Vision of the University and will remain engaged with your leadership in taking appropriate steps to the advantage of the students.

To our faculty senate, we are aware that there exist very few pivotal concerns for the wellbeing of the teaching staff; but it is essential to maintain the dialogue approach at all times; especially at the moment the Administration had made gainful efforts and is exploring viable means to add more values to the institutional work.

To our parents and friends, we appreciate your presence here today; and we will not disappoint you.

As we retire, we would like to appreciate the interim Student Union Government for playing a great role and we implore you to assist us with your experience in steering the affairs of our University.

Again, special appreciation goes to our Lawmakers, local Authorities and other Guests for gracing this historic occasion, and we plead with you to keep your office accessible for interaction.

May God continue to bless the Grand Bassa University as we strive to keep lighting the Candle.

Thanks so muchโ€ฆโ€ฆ!!!
