President Boakai Appoints Retired Maj. Gen. Daniel Dee Ziankahn to Lead LDEA

Monrovia, Liberia – August 11, 2026 – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has appointed Major General (Retired) Daniel Dee Ziankahn, Jr. as Director General of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), pending Senate confirmation. The appointment underscores the administration’s push against illicit drugs and transnational organized crime.

Ziankahn, a seasoned security professional, previously served as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Minister of National Defense, and most recently as Military Advisor to President Boakai. His career spans the administrations of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah.

This marks the fourth leadership change at the LDEA since Boakai took office in 2024. The President also named Ms. Precious Rue as Deputy Director General for Operations and Mr. Prince Mulbah as Deputy Director General for Administration. All three will serve in an acting capacity pending confirmation. Former Deputy Director General Ernest Tarpeh has returned to the National Security Agency.

The new team will report directly to the President in consultation with the Minister of Justice. The appointments follow a Ministry of Justice investigative report and form part of broader efforts to strengthen Liberia’s response to narcotics trafficking.

President Boakai has identified drug trafficking as a major threat to national security, public health, and development, maintaining a zero-tolerance policy backed by stronger enforcement and interagency coordination. After a National Security Council meeting, he reaffirmed that allegations of misconduct will be handled with due process and that no official is exempt from accountability.

He urged the new leadership to work with the Joint Security apparatus, the Ministry of Justice, and international partners to dismantle trafficking networks, strengthen borders, and protect Liberia’s youth.

“Our fight against drugs is a fight for the future of Liberia,” Boakai said. “There will be no safe haven for drug traffickers or those who aid and abet them.”

Three Women Break Barriers as Grand Bassa Hires Yellow Machines Operators

GARPUE TOWN, Grand Bassa County — Last week, the dusty grounds of Garpue Town came alive with the growl of engines and the determination of 225 Liberians chasing a shot at steady work. Their mission? Master the heavy equipment that could reshape Liberia’s crumbling roads and, in the process, reshape their own futures.

When the final results came in, only 56 had made the cut — a tough but transparent outcome that left no room for favoritism. What made headlines, though, were the three women who refused to be sidelined in a male-dominated world. Two earned spots as excavator operators, while another climbed into the seat of a compactor. In a single stroke, they punched through long-standing gender barriers and proved that competence knows no gender.

The three-day practical test, held from July 29 to 31, was a joint effort by the Ministry of Public Works and the Special Presidential Projects Coordinating Committee, backed by a dedicated Grand Bassa County team of Thomas Davis, Momolu S. Johnson, and Othello Teah. What started as an official list of 48 applicants quickly swelled as word spread. Another 177 hopefuls showed up unannounced, drawn by the promise of real opportunity in a county hungry for jobs.

County Administrative Officer Hon. James Duen kicked things off with a clear message: stay focused, the process would be fair. And fair it was. Of the 225 who arrived, 209 braved the hands-on assessments. Eighty-one advanced to the theoretical and verbal interviews on August 1 and 2, facing a 13-member panel drawn from national and county authorities. By the end, 77 sat for the final round, and just 56 proved they had what it takes.

The hires spanned ten critical roles — from bulldozer and motor grader operators to auto mechanics and electricians. Truck driving led the pack with 26 successful candidates, joined by two low-bed operators. The competition was razor-sharp; some candidates were separated by as little as 0.20 points on the practical exam, showing just how high the bar had been set.

A few positions remain open — one backhoe and one motor grader operator — after not enough candidates cleared the threshold. Yet the real story goes beyond the numbers. This recruitment drive stood out for its emphasis on merit over connections. For Grand Bassa residents, it delivered more than new hires: it offered proof that hard skills can open doors once thought permanently closed, especially for women ready to operate the machines that will build Liberia’s future.

The Human Resource and Administration Department of the Liberian Agricultural Company (LAC) has approved the association’s proposal to convert the company’s existing Vacation Job Program into a formal two-month internship scheme that will place twenty university students.

The new arrangement is designed to give participants hands-on workplace experience that directly supports their academic training.

Mass Jubilation Greets Arrival of Government Yellow Machines in Grand Bassa

BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County — The first batch of government-purchased yellow machines arrived in Buchanan on Sunday, July 26, 2026, sparking mass jubilation as local leaders and residents escorted the heavy equipment through the city’s principal streets.

Grand Bassa County Superintendent Karyou Johnson could not remain seated in his vehicle. He joined well-meaning citizens marching alongside the machines, chanting “I like my Boakai business, aay yaa aay.”

Superintendent Johnson, his team, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, and residents escorted the machines along Buchanan’s main streets before proceeding to Big Joe Town, where the equipment is being stored.

Henry Costa Praises Boakai’s Crackdown on Alleged Co***ne Syndicate Links

MONROVIA — Liberian political commentator Henry P. Costa has publicly commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for taking firm action against government officials allegedly connected to a co***ne trafficking syndicate, describing the move as the decisive leadership Liberians expect when national integrity and security are threatened.

In a statement, Costa said he was encouraged by reports that individuals associated with the former Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) administration who may have facilitated the drug trade are under investigation, with the possibility of criminal indictments where evidence warrants.

ArcelorMittal Liberia to Sponsor 24 Students for Overseas STEM Master’s Degrees

ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) will send 24 Liberian students to pursue Master’s degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through its Advanced Academic Scholarship Program (AAASP).

The selected scholars, drawn from Nimba, B**g, and Grand Bassa counties, were recognized at a farewell ceremony on Friday at the Ministry of Mines and Energy before their departure.

At the event, AML Chief Executive Officer Michiel Vandermerme urged the students to achieve academic excellence and return to help advance Liberia’s development. He also restated the company’s dedication to meeting its human-capacity-building commitments under the Mineral Development Agreement.

Government representatives similarly encouraged the scholars to stay focused on their studies. The beneficiaries, in turn, expressed gratitude to AML and the Government of Liberia, noting that the selection process had been transparent, competitive, and based on merit.

Since its launch in 2012, the program has supported 99 Liberian students, 96 of whom have studied in 16 countries spanning four continents. From 2012 to 2025, AML has invested more than US$2.84 million in tuition, living costs, travel, and related educational expenses to help train Liberia’s next generation of skilled professionals.
