Geebeor Town, Grand Bassa County-At least one person has been confirmed dead, while four others are in critical condition following a truck accident near Geebeor Town in District #4, Grand Bassa County.

The accident occurred Sunday night when a green truck loaded with planks from the River Cess side overturned while attempting to cross a dilapidated log bridge.

As of the time of publication, the identity of the deceased has not been confirmed. The names of the injured victims are also unknown.

Eyewitnesses said six people were on board the truck, including the driver, the conductor, and four passengers. According to local residents, four people were seated in the front of the truck and two at the back.

Witnesses further reported that the conductor advised the driver to spend the night in Geebeor Town and wait until daylight before crossing the bridge because of its poor condition. However, the driver reportedly insisted on crossing.

This is the second truck accident at the Geebeor Town bridge within two weeks.

On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, another truck carrying planks from River Cess also crashed at the same bridge, leaving one person dead.

Residents say the bridge poses a serious danger to motorists and are calling on the government to urgently rehabilitate it.

They warn that more lives could be lost if no action is taken.

GARPU TOWN, Grand Bassa County: August 3, 2026 — The roar of heavy machinery echoed across Garpu Town last week as 225 hopeful Liberians gathered with one goal in mind: securing a job operating the equipment expected to help transform Liberia's roads.

By the time the dust settled, only 56 candidates had earned employment, proving that the recruitment exercise was as competitive as it was transparent. Among the successful candidates were three women who broke into a field traditionally dominated by men—two qualified as excavator operators and one as a compactor operator, marking a significant milestone for women's participation in heavy equipment operations.

The practical testing, held from July 29 to 31, was conducted by the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) and the Special Presidential Projects Coordinating Committee (SPPCC), with support from a three-member Grand Bassa County team comprising Thomas Davis, Momolu S. Johnson, and Othello Teah.

While only 48 applicants had officially submitted their names through the Superintendent's Office, another 177 people joined after hearing about the opportunity, reflecting the strong demand for employment across the county. County Administrative Officer Hon. James Dwen officially launched the exercise, encouraging participants to remain determined while assuring them of a fair process.

The recruitment was designed to reward competence rather than connections. Of the 225 people who turned out, 209 completed the practical assessment, but only 81 qualified for the theoretical and verbal interviews held on August 1 and 2 before a 13-member panel representing the MPW, SPPCC, and Grand Bassa County. Seventy-seven candidates appeared for the final interviews, and only 56 met the standards required for immediate employment across ten professional categories, including excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader, compactor, motor grader, truck and low-bed operators, as well as auto mechanics and auto electricians.

Truck operators accounted for the largest share of successful candidates, with 26 truck drivers and two low-bed operators hired. The process also revealed how closely contested the competition was, with some candidates separated by just 0.20 points during the practical assessment.

Despite the successful recruitment, vacancies remain for one backhoe operator and one motor grader operator after insufficient candidates qualified. For Grand Bassa, the exercise was more than a hiring campaign—it showcased a merit-based selection process while demonstrating that women are increasingly breaking barriers in professions once considered exclusively for men.

More than half of all cybercrimes reported across Africa is now AI-enabled, according to a new report by Interpol. The African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026 says cybercrime-related financial losses have more than doubled since 2024, rising from $192 million to $484 million. Online scams are the most frequently reported form of cybercrime. Financial services, telecoms and government institutions are the hardest hit sectors. The report also reveals that criminals are now using AI to create synthetic identities that bypass biometric verification systems. Scam centers have been reported in 72% of surveyed countries, with the highest concentration in Southern and West Africa. Four Interpol-coordinated operations in 2025 led to more than 1,500 arrests and the recovery of over $100 million.

As a journalist and closed follower of the Liberian Agricultural Company-LAC, I firmly believe that constructive criticism plays an important role in promoting accountability and continuous improvement. No responsible institution should shy away from criticism, and LAC is no exception.

Let me begin by acknowledging a simple truth: everything is not roses at LAC. There are still challenges that require attention, and the company continues to work diligently to address them. We do not claim perfection.

However, what is concerning is the growing trend of some individuals deliberately taking photographs of old housing units that are already scheduled for renovation or replacement, while ignoring the significant improvements that have already been made across the plantation. Such selective reporting creates an incomplete and unfair picture of the company's progress.

To those who genuinely care about the future of LAC and the well-being of its workers and surrounding communities, I respectfully ask a few questions:
1. Is LAC still the same in its entirety as it was years ago?
2. Have there not been visible and meaningful improvements across the plantation?
3. If those improvements exist, why are they not being published alongside the areas that still need attention?
True objectivity requires presenting both the successes and the shortcomings.

Having personally visited many sections of the plantation, I have witnessed firsthand the remarkable changes taking place. Significant improvements have been made and continue in communities such as Ceeko Camp, Three Old Camp, Gorzohn Camp, Six Houses, Dry Bin Camp, Fifteen Houses, Complex Camp, Beabea Camp, and many other camps too numerous to mention. These developments are visible to anyone willing to look beyond isolated images.

Beyond improvements within the plantation, LAC continues to invest in neighboring communities through the rehabilitation of roads, the provision of safe drinking water, infrastructure development, healthcare support, vacation employment opportunities for students, assistance to local farmers, scholarships for Liberians, and the nurturing of future professionals by providing practical career development opportunities for graduating students from universities and colleges under the guidance of the company's qualified staff.

These initiatives may not erase every challenge overnight, but they demonstrate a genuine commitment to progress and community development.
Criticism is healthy. It encourages institutions to do better. But criticism should also be guided by objectivity, fairness, and truth. Let us point out what remains to be done while also acknowledging what has already been achieved. That balanced approach serves the interests of workers, communities, the company, and Liberia as a whole.

Our collective goal should not be to promote one-sided narratives but to encourage continuous improvement through honest, fair, and responsible public discourse.

The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Margibi County Detachment has arrested a 26-year-old man identified as Dau Sheffi for allegedly transporting a large quantity of tramadol into Grand Bassa County.

The arrest took place at about 6:30 p.m. on July 30, 2026, at the Cotton Tree checkpoint in Harbel, Lower Margibi County. According to the LDEA, the suspect, a Liberian of Bassa ethnicity and a resident of Grand Bassa County, was traveling from Monrovia to Grand Bassa when officers intercepted him after he allegedly attempted to bypass the checkpoint.
Authorities say officers discovered 28 boxes of tramadol in his possession.

The drugs have an estimated street value of 560,000 Liberian dollars, equivalent to approximately 2,947 United States dollars.
Following his arrest, Dau Sheffi was investigated, formally charged, and forwarded to court. He has since been remanded at the Kakata Central Prison pending trial.

Speaking on the arrest, LDEA Margibi Detachment Commander Alfred Jlopleh reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that all suspected drug traffickers are prosecuted. Commander Jlopleh recalled his pledge during Liberia's 179th Independence celebrations in July that anyone arrested for drug-related offenses in Margibi would face the full weight of the law.

Commander Jlopleh also commended officers assigned at the Cotton Tree checkpoint, members of the Joint Security, and citizens who continue to provide information leading to drug-related arrests.

He is urging residents of Margibi County and the country at large to continue working closely with the LDEA in the fight against illegal drugs, stressing that protecting Liberia's younger generation from substance abuse is a shared national responsibility.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has pledged to donate $250,000, to support flood victims in Ghana'. Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the full amount will be transferred to the appropriate authorities as soon as it is received. Meanwhile, Ghana has already released some $29 million from its national contingency fund for emergency flood relief and long-term mitigation measures. On June 29, flooding affected seven regions and displaced thousands of residents, causing widespread damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure.
