Who in Charge of Criminal Cases? District Commissioner Denied Handling Legal Cases Arising in Chedepo Administrative District Due to Jarkaken Magistrate Court Absences

By Ben TC Brooks

River Gee County - [August 6, 2025] - The Chedepo Administrative District is facing challenges over who is tasked with addressing criminal cases as the Jarkaken Magistrate Court remains inactive.

The situation has intensified after the District Commissioner made a statement disavowing any role in prosecuting criminal cases.

The Jarkaken Magistrate Court has played a crucial role in upholding law and order in the district. However, some residents, who wish to remain anonymous, have accused the District Commissioner of improperly involving himself in criminal matters.

Since the magistrate court's closure and the appointment of District Commissioner Koffa Noring, there have been claims that he is interfering in criminal cases, a responsibility that residents believe does not belong to him, particularly given the absence of a magistrate for the last 8 to 9 months.

In his defense, Commissioner Koffa Noring denied these accusations, emphasizing that he understands his role and refrains from handling serious criminal cases.

"I know my responsibilities as a District Commissioner, which include managing land disputes and personal conflicts, but not serious offenses like r**e or murder, which I refer to other officials," he stated.

Nevertheless, the prolonged inactivity of the Jarkaken Magistrate Court has left both local authorities and the community uncertain. As criminal incidents continue to rise, residents are increasingly worried about the lack of judicial oversight and its potential impact on public safety.

The current situation raises questions about who is truly in charge of handling criminal cases in the district. With no clear guidance on how to proceed, many are contemplating what alternative solutions might be implemented to ensure justice is upheld amid this legal void.

Residents have voiced their concerns, noting the dangers associated with the absence of a dedicated court for criminal issues.

Since Associate Magistrate, Franklin Myers left, there has been no Magistrate to assign here for the past 8-9 to months now. This Town and district is district is big, and criminal cases activities are happening here but no proper handling because the court is closed". Said old man Peter Chea a resident of Jarkaken.

However, delays in addressing cases could result in unresolved conflicts and diminish accountability for offenders, which could erode community confidence in the justice system.

As local leaders engage in discussions to find a resolution to this situation, advocates in the community are calling for immediate action to prioritize justice in the Chedepo Administrative District.

They propose alternative solutions, such as temporary mobile courts or support from neighboring districts, to manage the increasing caseload while the Jarkaken Magistrate Court remains closed.

The situation highlights the critical need for a strong judicial system capable of effectively handling the complexities of criminal justice.

As Chedepo faces these challenges, the hope is for a prompt and thorough resolution that will restore order and rebuild trust within the Chedepo Administrative District.

River Gee Capital Lacks Intellectual Forum, Hinders Public Dialogue and Accountability of Public Officials

By: Ben TC Brooks

River Gee County - [August 5, 2025] - The absence of an intellectual forum in River Gee's Capital, Fish-Town, hampers the meaningful discussions from public officials and the sharing of ideas.

The shortfall in public discourse raises alarms about the city’s capacity to address pressing issues and inhibits the nurturing of local talent.

Establishing an intellectual platform is vital, as it would foster critical thinking and innovation while offering a space for community members, officials, and the public to engage with various experts and thought leaders.

Without these opportunities, many residents find it challenging to voice their concerns, share their viewpoints, and collaborate on solutions to local problems.

Community leaders and educators have expressed their dissatisfaction, warning that without a strong intellectual forum, the county risks falling behind in critical sectors such as education, health, and economic development.

The youth are particularly in need of mentorship and opportunities to fully explore their ideas, which this absence stifles, limiting their potential contributions to society. Furthermore, the lack of intellectual engagement inhibits collaboration across different sectors in River Gee, including academia, government, and non-profit organizations.

"It’s quite embarrassing that our county, especially the capital, lacks a place to sit down, relax, and exchange ideas," remarked esteemed local figure Jereom K. Wesseh. "How can we address the issues impacting us and plan for the future?" he questioned.

"As we reach mid-year, it’s crucial to engage our County Authority to evaluate our development progress, yet nothing is being done," Wesseh added.

He further criticized local civil society organizations for primarily attending workshops and collecting sitting fees rather than genuinely serving the community.

In response, Abu Diallo, Chairman of the Civil Society Council of Liberia for River Gee, recognized the absence of an intellectual center in the county, attributing it to the perceived disengagement of Fish-Town’s youth.

"I have urged the young people in Fish-Town to find a central location, even if it’s just a house, to establish an intellectual center. Unfortunately, there has been little progress," Diallo expressed.

“It is incredibly disheartening for us to lack a forum. We often find ourselves without appropriate spaces to meet and discuss crucial issues. As a result, we typically gather in entertainment venues or private homes for important conversations since there is nowhere quiet for us to meet," he added.

However, Diallo mentioned that he has begun initial discussions to secure a site for an intellectual center in the coming year.

Creating this forum could inspire a new generation of leaders to advocate for their communities. By promoting a culture of inquiry and open dialogue, River Gee County can harness the wealth of ideas and creativity among its residents, although no initiatives have materialized yet.

Establishing an intellectual forum would not only benefit the county but also empower its members to tackle challenges with innovation and assurance. It is essential for River Gee County to make the creation of such a forum a priority.

By fostering collaboration and open dialogue, the county can unlock its full potential and lay the groundwork for sustainable development and progress, a collective effort that could provide lasting benefits for future generations.

Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence has vowed to intervene following public outrage over John F. Kennedy Medical Center’s new policy ending free care for children under five and increasing delivery costs.

“We have started to intervene in this,” Lawrence said. “No woman in labor pain should have to pay a deposit before admission at any government hospital in Liberia. Services should be provided immediately upon arrival. Delivery is an emergency.”

Her remarks come amid concerns that the policy could worsen child mortality in a country where nearly one in ten children die before their fifth birthday.

“Liberia is not for CDC and UP,” Journalist Yates Calls for a New Option from The Opposition But Not Weah

Journalist Charles Yates writes ✍️ 👇

“Liberia is not for CDC and UP. It is time that the consciousness of the people wake-up to the political reality of the day. From all indications CDC and UP are presenting themselves as the only alternative we have. This is a country of multiple political parties and we need to consider those other options. Until we can try another political party apart from CDC and UP, those two parties will continue to abuse this country and think that we cannot do without them.

No matter what UP folks will do, Weah should never be an option for Liberian again. If Weah is the only option, I rather Joseph Nyuma Boakai remains in power . It is time for us to consider looking in the opposition community for a better and new option and let's put CDC and UP away from Liberia's political leadership space. Liberia is bigger than CDC and UP and we have more good people outside of these two parties.
I rest my case. Happy Sunday.” Journalist Charles B. Yates

The Deputy Director General for News Media & Rebranding at the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), Mr. D-Flow Flomo, II, has publicly called out Commissioner Patrick Honnah of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) for splashing cash amid public outcry of increased unemployment, hardship, and rising prices in Liberia, which President Boakai admitted to in his recent Independence Day’s speech.

Mr. Flomo breaks his silence, calling for a cut in the huge salaries and benefits of Commissioner Honnah and others in government. “It is time that Patrick Honnah and his like salaries be cut to give some to those in the discussion: city officials, teachers, police officers, etc.,” LBS Deputy Director Flomo asserted.

This is a developing story.

“90% of City Solicitors Not on Payroll,” Gov’t Prosecutor Criticizes LTA Commissioner for Splashing Cash

Monrovia, Liberia - [July 3, 2025] - An Assigned City Solicitor at the Ministry of Justice has raised alarm over what he describes as a growing sense of injustice and economic neglect within the country’s prosecutorial arm, taking particular aim at Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) Commissioner Patrick Honnah for allegedly flaunting money during a public celebration.

In a statement issued over the weekend, Garpue K. Wonlue, who is currently assigned at the Omega Magisterial Court, condemned the Commissioner’s lavish display of wealth during the recent birthday celebration of Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah.

According to Cllr. Wonlue, the extravagant financial gestures by Commissioner Honnah are tone-deaf and damaging in a country where, he says, “90% of City Solicitors and Prosecutors are not on government salary or payroll.”

“In a poor country where many struggle financially especially state prosecutors who are volunteering their services without pay this kind of display can be perceived as insensitive and hurtful,” the City Solicitor wrote.

Wonlue warned that such actions could breed discontent and erode public trust, particularly among unpaid public servants.

Growing Frustration in the Justice Sector

The City Solicitor’s statement adds to growing concerns about the lack of compensation for legal professionals serving in local courts across the country. While Liberia continues to grapple with budgetary constraints, legal practitioners like Wonlue say they feel neglected and undervalued despite playing a vital role in the justice system.

He outlined three major concerns arising from public displays of wealth by government officials:

1.Exacerbating Inequality: The stark contrast between high-ranking officials and struggling civil servants could deepen social divisions and provoke frustration.

2.Social Tension: Flaunting money publicly, especially during celebrations, may appear disrespectful to ordinary Liberians and could lead to unrest.

3.Undermining Governance: Wonlue warned that such behavior contradicts the image of a serious government striving to regularize the payroll and improve conditions for all public servants.

“This attitude does not only create divisions within the communities, but it also embarrasses a serious-minded government that is struggling to place all its volunteers on salary and increase the wages of those earning less,” he emphasized.

A Call for Responsibility

The Prosecutor called on Commissioner Honnah and other government officials to exercise greater empathy and discretion in their public conduct, particularly in light of the country’s economic hardships.

“It’s essential to be mindful, Commissioner Honnah, of the impact of your actions on others,” he urged. “Let us promote a sense of empathy and understanding.”

Cllr. Wonlue’s remarks have since circulated across social media and local platforms, fueling fresh debate about wealth inequality, governance ethics, and justice sector reform in Liberia.
