Citizens Condemn Jungle Energy Power for Unfair Charges and Exploitation of Customers
Ganta, Nimba County, November 6, 2025

Citizens of Nimba and B**g Counties are expressing serious grievances over what they describe as unfair billing practices and customer exploitation by Jungle Energy Power (JEP). Customers have raised strong concerns about being charged unnecessary taxes and high fixed fees, even when they do not use electricity for months.

A recent electricity receipt from a customer in the Ganta Deakehmein Community reveals troubling evidence of these practices. The receipt, dated November 6, 2025, shows that the customer had not purchased electricity for two months, yet was charged a fixed fee of US$4.50, in addition to other deductions. Out of US$10.00 paid, the customer received only US$5.50 worth of electricity, while US$0.50 was taken as tax, leaving nearly half of the amount consumed by non-usage charges.

Citizens describe this as exploitation, questioning why they should pay such heavy deductions when they are paying for a commercial service that should be based solely on consumption.

“We are paying for current, not for taxes or fixed fees we don’t benefit from,” said one angry customer. “How can we carry US$10 and receive only US$5.50 worth of electricity? That’s exploitation, not service.”

Despite the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) recently approving a 12% reduction in electricity tariff for Jungle Energy Power customers, from US$0.25 to US$0.22 per kWh effective January 31, 2025, customers say the reduction has brought no real relief. The introduction of a monthly fixed charge of US$1.25 and continuous 10% tax on every transaction has effectively canceled out the benefit of the tariff cut.

Residents argue that these deductions are especially unfair for people who may not purchase or use electricity regularly. They demand that JEP and LERC explain why customers who have not used current for months are still being charged as though they did.

Citizens are calling on both Jungle Energy Power and the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) to:

1. Immediately review the fixed charge and tax system to ensure customers are billed only for the electricity they actually consume.

2. Refund or credit customers who have been unfairly overcharged or taxed without usage.

3. Establish transparency and accountability in billing to prevent continued exploitation.

4. Engage with community representatives to find a fair and sustainable solution that reflects the economic realities of local consumers.

The people of Nimba and B**g Counties acknowledge the government’s efforts to ensure affordable electricity but believe the current billing structure imposed by JEP undermines those goals. Until these issues are addressed, customers say they will continue to view the company’s actions as unjust and exploitative.

Learners of the shut down PYJ Polytechnic University in Ganta are requesting transfer papers to pursue their studies at other colleges. The institution has stayed closed for over a year following the passing of its founder, Senator Prince Y. Johnson.

The entrances of PYJ Polytechnic remain sealed, and the lecture halls deserted. Since the death of its founder in 2024, the school has not resumed operations, leaving students doubtful about their educational future.

Dissatisfied learners are urging the management to release transfer credentials so they can register at different institutions. Without those papers, they warn that years of academic effort could be lost.

Intensifying their concerns are reports that the university has allegedly been purchased by a private individual, who intends to convert the campus for non-educational purposes. Students say this development reinforces their fear that the institution may never reopen.

For three straight terms, learners have anticipated communication from school authorities but received none. Many feel neglected and describe the situation as a denial of their right to learning.

Observers contend that the prolonged closure and reported sale illustrate the rapidly fading legacy of the late Senator Prince Y. Johnson, once seen as a dominant political figure in Nimba County and popularly known as the “Godfather of Nimba.”

Up to now, the administration of PYJ Polytechnic has not provided any official clarification concerning the alleged sale or the appeals of the students.

Liberian-American Barbara Lewis Calls for National Reflection on Youth Unemployment

By Wonder P W Gborwee Jr

On Monday, July 14, 2025, Liberian-American advocate Barbara Lewis appeared as a featured guest on the talk show “Liberia in Focus”, aired live on Radio Kergheamahn 94.5 MHz. The program, which continues to serve as a platform for dialogue on key national issues, hosted Lewis for an in-depth conversation on one of Liberia’s most pressing challenges: youth unemployment.

The topic for discussion, titled “Youth Unemployment in Liberia: A Social Burden and a Spiritual Responsibility,” struck a chord with many listeners both in Liberia and across the diaspora. During her appearance, Lewis highlighted the growing economic and psychological impact of youth joblessness in the country and emphasized the urgent need for collective action.

“We cannot ignore the weight of this issue any longer,” Lewis stated during the broadcast. “Unemployment among young people is not just a number on a report — it’s a reality that affects our homes, our communities, and the moral fabric of our nation.”

Lewis, who has lived in the United States for over a decade, said she continues to follow the situation in Liberia closely. She described the widespread unemployment of youth as a dual crisis — one that impacts not only the economy, but also the nation's spiritual and moral foundation.

“When young people lose hope, the nation loses its future,” she said. “This is not just about jobs. This is about dignity, direction, and destiny.”

Throughout the hour-long segment, Lewis called on government leaders, civil society, religious institutions, and especially the Liberian diaspora, to take a more proactive role in addressing the issue. She urged unity and a renewed sense of national responsibility.

In one of the most powerful moments of the broadcast, Lewis reminded listeners of the importance of national identity and pride. Her message was clear and heartfelt:

“Love Liberia as a Liberian. Love who you are.”

According to Lewis, such love should be expressed not only in words, but in action — through mentorship, job creation, education, innovation, and investment in the country’s youth.

Listeners from across Liberia called and texted into the program, expressing support for Lewis’s message. Some commended her for speaking boldly and calling attention to the spiritual dimension of the youth crisis, which is often overlooked.
