Residents of Gbarplay Town, Gbehlay-Geh District, Nimba County, are calling on the Government of Liberia and the Ministry of Education to urgently address serious challenges affecting education in their community.
In an open letter addressed to the President of Liberia, the Ministry of Education, lawmakers of Nimba County, and other relevant authorities, citizens expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the town's public school and the severe shortage of teachers.
According to the residents, the public school building in Gbarplay Town is in a deplorable condition and no longer provides a safe and conducive learning environment for students. They say the poor state of the facility has forced many children to travel to Karnplay and other neighboring communities in search of education.
The citizens further noted that many struggling parents are unable to afford transportation and other educational expenses, resulting in an increasing number of school-age children dropping out of school and being denied access to quality education.
Residents also disclosed that only two government-assigned teachers are currently serving the entire student population, a situation they described as inadequate and harmful to effective teaching and learning.
In their appeal, the residents urged the Government of Liberia and the Ministry of Education to conduct an immediate assessment of the school, rehabilitate the damaged facilities, deploy additional qualified teachers, provide adequate teaching and learning materials, and prioritize educational development in the town.
The citizens emphasized that education is the foundation of national development and stressed that children in Gbarplay Town deserve the same educational opportunities as their counterparts across Liberia.
