🇱🇷 The 16 Tribes of Liberia ; Who We Are and What We’re Known For
Liberia is not just a country; it’s a mix of 16 proud tribes , each carrying its own culture, food, traditions, and strength.
We may argue, tease each other, or joke about “who’s best,” but truth be told, every tribe has something special.
🧳 1. The Krahn : The Travellers
When it comes to travelling and living abroad, the Krahn people easily lead the way. From America to Europe, there’s almost no Liberian community overseas without Krahn folks in it. They’re known for helping family back home, investing in land, and maintaining strong roots despite being far away.
📚 2. The Mano: The Smart Ones
The Mano tribe from Nimba is often called one of the most bookish and clever groups in Liberia. They take education seriously , you’ll find many Mano people excelling in engineering, IT, medicine, and teaching. Their discipline in school and business is widely respected.
🧠 3. The Gio : The Fast Thinkers
The Gio, close cousins to the Mano, are sharp-minded, outspoken, and strategic. They adapt quickly and succeed in both politics and entrepreneurship. Education also runs deep in their communities.
💪 4. The Kpelle : The Backbone of the Land
As Liberia’s largest tribe, the Kpelle people are known for their hardworking spirit. They dominate farming and agriculture , the reason many call them “the backbone” of Liberia’s food supply. Patient, strong, and family-centered, Kpelle culture values community and effort over talk.

The Bassa tribe is celebrated for good food and good manners. If you’ve ever tasted Bassa pepper soup, palm butter, or dry rice with smoked fish, you know they deserve their reputation. They’re also known to be peaceful, polite, and family-oriented.

No tribe matches the Kru when it comes to stubbornness , in a good way. The Kru are bold, outspoken, and fearless. They are natural leaders, excellent sailors, and proud people who never back down easily.

Quiet but wise, the Lorma people are respected for their honesty, loyalty, and simplicity. They don’t show off, but they stand firm in truth and community unity.

The Kissi tribe values unity and respect. They are known for strong family ties, good farming skills, and a deep sense of hospitality toward visitors.

The Vai people are known for discipline, intelligence, and creativity. They even developed their own written alphabet long before modern schooling spread , a good example is a proof of their advanced cultural legacy.

The Belle tribe is small but hardworking. They farm, trade, and live peacefully, focusing on community growth rather than loud competition.

The Mandingo tribe are business-minded and strong in faith. You’ll find them running shops, transport businesses, and import/export trade all over Liberia. They’re disciplined, focused, and deeply connected to the Muslim community.

The Gbandi people are mainly farmers and community builders. Known for honesty and hospitality, they value helping one another and living clean, disciplined lives.

Krahn travel far. Have the highest Liberians abroad.
Mano & Gio lead in education with a touch of Vai people a little
Kpelle work the hardest.
Bassa & Grebo cook the best. They are multi talented, they can cook any soup with a 100% taste as if they are the original people of that county or region.
Kru never back down. They are fussy, bold😂, never keep things at heart, expressive and make use of everything required to learn.
Lorma & Gola remain honest and humble. Their ladies have the widest waist, biggest ba
