Former Minister of State Nathaniel McGill wrote this:

The Government must demonstrate that it is truly committed to fighting corruption.

The Arthur Eze oil deal will be thoroughly vetted. It is unacceptable that Arthur Eze reportedly earned over $200 million from Liberia’s oil deals while our country received no benefit. We cannot continue to make the same mistakes or approve bad concessions. The time has come to correct the wrongs of the past.

Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture must account for the $200 million allocated under the Star-P and RETRAP projects intended to empower our farmers. There must be full accountability. As we have returned to session, we will not rest until the Liberian people receive the truth and the transparency they rightfully deserve.

Lawmakers Launch Major Investigation into Corruption and High Fees in Liberia’s Shipping Sector..

Liberia’s House Committee on Maritime Affairs, led by Representative Austin B. Taylor, has launched a full-scale investigation into alleged corruption and mismanagement in the nation’s shipping and port sectors, following complaints of arbitrary fees, non-refundable deposits, and weak oversight.

Testifying before lawmakers, Innis Zogar of the Customs Brokers Association of Liberia (CBAL) described rampant exploitation by shipping lines that arbitrarily hike fees without justification and ignore proposals for a digital system to manage container deposits leaving millions unaccounted for. The committee has demanded a comprehensive report on port bottlenecks, demurrage practices, and regulatory failures, pledging to uncover systemic abuse and push for reforms to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in Liberia’s maritime operations.

Senator Konneh alarms over Liberia high borrowing rates, says Liberia’s total debt has reached US$2.7 billion, about 57 percent of the country’s GDP.

Senator Amara Konneh, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts and Audit, has raised concern about Liberia’s growing debt and weak financial accountability, warning that it is hurting the economy and eroding public trust in government.

Speaking during Tuesday’s Senate session, Senator Konneh revealed that Liberia’s total debt has reached US$2.7 billion, about 57 percent of the country’s GDP. He said the domestic debt alone is US$1.1 billion, which limits private sector growth and strains national resources.

“This level of borrowing crowds out private investment and reduces funds that should go to health, education, and infrastructure,” Konneh warned.

He cited a General Auditing Commission (GAC) report showing that 88 percent of domestic debt claims were rejected due to missing documents and unsupported payment requests, describing it as “a serious lapse in financial management.”

Konneh said despite efforts to improve revenue and strengthen debt control, off-budget spending and weak oversight continue to undermine the national budget.

“Budget credibility in Liberia is a major challenge, and we must fix it to rebuild public confidence,” he said.

The Senator pledged to work with both the Legislature and the Executive to improve transparency, ensure proper debt management, and restore public trust.

Boakai Submits 8 Offshore Oil Blocks to Legislature for Approval

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has sent eight offshore oil contracts to the Legislature, marking Liberia’s first major oil deals in over a decade.

The deals involve two companies, TotalEnergies and Oranto Petroleum, each getting four oil blocks along Liberia’s Atlantic coast.

The agreements could bring over US$17 million in bonuses and fees and are part of Boakai’s plan to create jobs and boost the economy.

Lawmakers have started reviewing the contracts and are expected to report back in two weeks.

If approved, these will be Liberia’s first active oil projects since 2013.

Widespread Corruption Deters Foreign Direct Investment in Liberia – U.S. Report Warns**

Widespread corruption deters foreign direct investment in Liberia, according to the U.S. State Department’s 2025 Investment Climate report. The report highlights that foreign investors often have to pay bribes just to meet with government officials, creating a business environment where unethical practices are the norm. Government officials are seen as prioritizing personal gain over long-term economic partnerships, further discouraging legitimate investment. The lack of transparency in contract awards and weak legal protections only deepen distrust among international investors.

Additionally, the report criticizes outdated investment laws, restrictions on foreign ownership, and a shortage of skilled labor as further barriers to doing business in Liberia. Political favoritism and interference continue to undermine fair market operations, prompting some investors to seek more stable and transparent markets elsewhere. Despite efforts to market Liberia’s potential, the gap between promotional promises and the reality on the ground remains wide. The report concludes that without meaningful reforms, Liberia’s reputation as a risky and corrupt investment destination will persist.

Former Speaker Koffa Urges USD 25 Million Social Safety Net Fund to Help Vulnerable Liberians

Monrovia—Former Speaker J. Fornati Koffa has announced that he will present a letter on the floor this Thursday advocating for the establishment of a USD 25 million Social Safety Net Fund aimed at assisting vulnerable Liberians in paying school fees and rent.

Speaking on the pressing economic hardships faced by the population, Rep. Koffa emphasized that “when the town is hard, the government must intervene.” He referenced social support programs in the United States such as food stamps as examples of how governments can provide relief to struggling citizens.

To finance the proposed fund, Former Speaker Koffa suggested reallocating resources by cutting benefits, reducing foreign travels, limiting vehicle purchases, redirecting funds from the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), and borrowing from the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP).

He stressed the urgency of action, saying, “Our people are restless and crying for relief. The town is hard, and we must act now!”

The former Speaker’s proposal highlights growing public demand for government intervention to ease financial burdens amid current economic challenges.
