PRESS RELEASE

WAEC CLARIFIES ISSUES SURROUNDING GRADUATION CEREMONIES

MONROVIA, September 23, 2025 - The Secretariat of the Liberia National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has observed that some stakeholders in education are misinterpreting the Results for WASSCE by misrepresenting pass to imply graduation and matriculation to higher institutions of learning.

WAEC hereby informs the public that the requirements for graduation and matriculation are national policies set by the governments of member countries. It can be recalled that in 2018 when Liberia fully joined the other member countries in writing WASSCE, the Government of Liberia decided that passing any one subject was the requirement for graduation but not for matriculation.

Later by 2020, the government decided that passing three subjects was the requirement for graduation. Finally in 2022, the government took the decision for the qualification for graduation and matriculation to be passing five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

Therefore, we want to use this medium to provide the following clarifications:

1. Candidates who write WASSCE are eligible to receive
certificates if they pass in at least one subject and not
necessarily for graduation;

2. Only subject(s) passed by a candidate are being shown on the
certificate;

3. A candidate can have more than one certificate for different
diets of WASSCE, and each of the certificates will only show
the subjects that candidate made a pass in;

4. The indication of โ€œPASSEDโ€ in the remark column of the results
spread sheets and at the bottom of candidatesโ€™ individual
results pages connotes that the candidate is eligible for
certificates irrespective of the number of subjects passed; and

5. It is the governments of member countries that determine a
candidateโ€™s eligibility for graduation and matriculation.

The Secretariat is hereby encouraging school authorities to adhere to the Ministry of Educationโ€™s eligibility criteria for graduation.

We will appreciate school authorities reaching out to us for clarification about issues they do not understand.

Signed: MANAGEMENT

The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has officially announced the dedication date for the newly renovated Gompa Sports Stadium, located in Gompa, Nimba County.

After months of extensive work and upgrades, the long-awaited reopening will take place on September 28, 2025. This milestone marks a significant achievement in the LFAโ€™s continued efforts to enhance sports infrastructure across Liberia.

According to credible sources within the association, the dedication ceremony will include a full day of activities, highlighted by a series of friendly matches designed to test the new playing pitch.

The event aims to showcase the stadiumโ€™s readiness to host competitive football and serve as a hub for sporting excellence in the region. Local teams and football fans are expected to participate in what promises to be an exciting celebration.

Special appreciation goes to LFA President Mustapha Raji and his dedicated team for their commitment to developing football in Liberia.

Their leadership has been instrumental in bringing this project to life, particularly in Nimba County, where the upgraded facility is expected to boost both community pride and athletic performance.

Congratulations!!!!

Nuquay Hits Back at Political Opponents, Declares Leadership โ€œIs About Serviceโ€

KAKATA, Liberia โ€“ Margibi County Senator Emmanuel Nuquay has sharply responded to critics and political rivals, insisting that true leadership is grounded in humility and service rather than power or self-glorification.

โ€œLeadership is about service, not power and self-glorification,โ€ Nuquay said, stressing that being a leader means remaining humble as a servant to the people.

Taking a swipe at some former lawmakers and political figures forming alliances against him ahead of the 2029 elections, Nuquay likened them to โ€œwatch doctorsโ€ โ€” people who claim they can make others rich but cannot make themselves wealthy.

โ€œIf those ganging against me want to challenge me, let them contest directly and not fight a proxy war,โ€ he declared.

The Senator further accused his rivals of seeking personal gain rather than genuine representation, saying, โ€œThey are carrying their stomachs in wheelbarrows, looking for someone to sponge on, as they hold no relevance and are living in political extinction.โ€

Nuquay also questioned the developmental track records of his critics, claiming that most of the former lawmakers now forming alliances had โ€œno visible development trademarkโ€ during their time in the legislature.

Meanwhile, the Margibi Senator pledged his full support to the community leadership of Lango Town, promising that his office remains committed to working with residents for the countyโ€™s growth.
