Over 700 labourers, primarily tappers are protesting unfair working conditions at Salala Rubber Corporation in Weala, District-5 Margibi County a company owned by the UK-based Socfin group.

The plantation workers are demonstrating through a go-slow action against the unfair deduction of 20 percent from wet rubber weight which has grossly impacted their ability to meet the monthly target of 1,700 kilograms.

The tappers are also protesting inadequate medical care despite the labour-intensive nature of their jobs as they complained of only being given prescriptions by the company's medical staff.

Attempts to directly speak with affected workers were unsuccessful due to fears of reprisals from management even though the worker union has yet to make an official public statement.

Jallah Mensah, the HR Manager of Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC), stated that the management has received a communication detailing the workers' grievances and will address them as soon as possible.

SRC is currently being managed according being managed accordingly by two Indian nationals reportedly involved in bad labour practices

Despite unfair labor practices, the UK operated Socfin owned company has been accused of sexually exploitation women woeking in the plantation as well as land grabbing.

SRC has not just come under criticism for alleged unfair labor practices but also accusations of sexually exploiting women working on its plantations couple with serious allegations of land grabbing.

These claims highlight significant ethical and human rights concerns surrounding Socfin's owned company operations in Liberia.
