ECOWAS Delegation Arrives in Liberia to Combat Drug Abuse and Mental Health Crisis Among Youth.

A high-level ECOWAS delegation has arrived in Monrovia, Liberia, to spearhead a regional sensitization campaign addressing the growing threat of drug abuse and mental health issues among West African youth.

This initiative, which precedes the August 7 โ€œSay No to Drugsโ€ Awareness Rally, is part of a broader partnership between the ECOWAS Parliament and the Liberian government. Led by Bomi County Senator Edwin Snowe, the delegation aims to harmonize regional drug laws and strengthen preventive and enforcement measures, particularly in Mano River Union countries.

During their visit, the ECOWAS team held meetings with key Liberian ministries and agencies, including Health, Education, Gender, and the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, to promote inter-agency coordination and community-based solutions. Officials like Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Nyei and Health Minister Dr. Louise Gboto praised the initiative and President Boakaiโ€™s leadership, while also acknowledging the need for more political commitment and institutional support. Monrovia Mayor John Siafa highlighted the urgency of protecting vulnerable youth, especially teenage girls, from the drug epidemic.

The delegation, which includes lawmakers and health advocates from across West Africa, is also engaging directly with affected youth, rehabilitation centers, and civil society groups. Their mission will conclude with a national rally and dialogue on August 7, where youth, government leaders, and stakeholders will unite in a show of solidarity. The ECOWAS Parliament, represented by figures like Cape Verdean MP Orlando Pereira Dias, is emphasizing the need for youth empowerment through job creation, emotional support, and rehabilitationโ€”signaling a unified West African response to a regional crisis.

MINISTRY OF POSTS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Clarification on Recent Moringa Issue

Monrovia, Liberia - August 4, 2025 โ€“

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications is compelled to address the recent discussion on the OK Morning Rush program hosted Monday morning, August 4, 2025, regarding the Moringa issue. We extend our appreciation to OK FM for their diligent efforts in keeping the Liberian public informed on national issues. However, the Ministry wishes to categorically state that under the current administration, we have not been involved in posting or accepting any items similar to Moringa.

For the public record, these Moringa allegations ignited with the past administration, which prompted an investigation by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) in August 2018. According to the LDEA's findings, as communicated in their letter dated September 27, 2018; the substance in question was tested and found to be negative of any narcotics or harmful substances.

The LDEA's letter, a copy of which is attached to this release, provides conclusive evidence of the Ministry's transparency in this matter.
Following our recent tour of various postal facilities in and outside of Monrovia, and in the spirit of rebranding to rekindle customersโ€™ confidence, we identified the need for renovation and disposal of overstayed mailable items that have spent over six (6) years including the Moringa.

This initiative was undertaken to improve our working environment, as the accumulated overstayed mailable items were causing unpleasant odor and other operational challenges. Considering the fact that the Moringa in question had no real value due to spoilage from improper storage since 2018, coupled with the lack of clear ownership of the item, the Ministry categorized it as debris needed to be disposed of.

Consequently, out of fear that this item could have resurfaced on the local market, the Ministry requested the Department of Maintenance to dispose of the Moringa under question to avoid hazard and create an enabling working environment for the employees with offices near the place it was kept.

As a Ministry, we are committed to transparency and accountability. We believe it is our obligation to provide information to the public when allegations surrounding integrity issues arise. In line with this commitment, we are providing this clarification and attaching the relevant documentation for public scrutiny. We are open to providing further updates and clarification on this matter and encourage the public to reach out to us for more information.

Our contact details are provided below.
The Ministry remains focused and committed to serving the people of Liberia void of sentimental distractions. We appreciate the public's understanding and support as we continue to work towards the betterment of our country.

Note: 1. For further information, please contact the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. 2. A copy of the LDEA's letter is attached for reference. 3. The Ministry is committed to transparency and accountability in all its operations.

Signed: ______________

Liberian House Calls for Suspension of Key Traffic Services Amid Investigation

MONROVIA, LIBERIA โ€“ August 4, 2025 โ€” The House of Representatives has formally requested President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to place a temporary suspension on key components of the governmentโ€™s concession agreement with the Liberia Traffic Management (LTM) company.

In a resolution passed during its regular session on Monday, the House urged the Executive Mansion to immediately halt LTM's involvement in the issuance of vehicle registrations, drivers' licenses, and license plates. Lawmakers say the suspension should remain in effect pending a full-scale investigation and comprehensive review of the agreement governing the controversial traffic deal.

The decision follows a series of concerns raised by members of the Legislature over the transparency, implementation, and financial arrangements tied to the contract awarded to the Lebanese-operated firm. Legislators cited repeated failures by the companyโ€™s leadership to appear before House committees, despite multiple formal summons, as a major trigger for the move.

โ€œThis is a matter of national interest,โ€ said Representative Clarence Gaye of District #5, Montserrado County. โ€œUntil we are satisfied that this agreement serves the best interest of the Liberian people, particularly in terms of accountability and revenue sharing, the implementation of these services should be suspended.โ€

Several lawmakers echoed concerns that the contract lacks clarity on oversight mechanisms and could infringe on the responsibilities traditionally held by the Ministry of Transport and the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA).

Mondayโ€™s resolution is expected to be forwarded to President Boakai with urgency, as the House seeks executive cooperation in restoring public trust and ensuring due diligence in all government agreements.

Meanwhile, civil society groups and transport unions have welcomed the move, with many calling for broader scrutiny into all private-public partnerships affecting national infrastructure and services.

BREAKING: Court Orders CDCโ€™s Immediate Eviction from Party Headquarters

In a landmark decision, the Civil Law Court โ€˜Aโ€™ has ordered the immediate eviction of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) from its national headquarters in Congo Town. The ruling, delivered Monday by Resident Judge George Smith, affirms that the 4.23-acre parcel of land in question legally belongs to the Barnards family estate.

๐Ÿ” Court Confirms Legal Ownership

The court's decision stems from a summary judgment granted in favor of the Barnards estate, which has long claimed rightful ownership of the disputed land. Judge Smith upheld the validity of a sale and purchase agreement between the CDC and the estateโ€™s administrators but emphasized that the ownership of the land was never legally transferred to the party.

This judgment aligns with a 2016 ruling from the Supreme Court of Liberia, which had earlier confirmed the Barnards family's claim to the property. The estate is currently administered by Mr. Ebrima Varney Dempster.

โŒ CDCโ€™s Motion to Enforce Sale Denied

Just days before the eviction order, CDC lawyers filed a motion seeking to compel the estate to sell the land outright to the party. However, Judge Smith dismissed the motion on Friday, citing a lack of legal grounds to enforce such a sale.

The CDC has since filed an appeal to the Supreme Court, requesting an intervention by Justice in Chambers, Her Honor Cieana Clinton-Johnson.

โš–๏ธ Legal Foundation of the Ruling

The ruling was issued under Rule 56 of the Liberian Civil Procedure Law, which allows courts to grant summary judgment when there are no genuine disputes over material facts and the law clearly supports one side. In such cases, the court is empowered to issue a ruling without proceeding to a full trial.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Whatโ€™s Next?

With the order now in effect, the CDC must vacate the premises immediately unless a stay is granted by the Supreme Court. The development marks a significant legal and political setback for the party, which has used the property as its operational base for over a decade.

As the case heads for further review, political observers are watching closely to see how the eviction will impact the CDCโ€™s organizational capacity and presence in the capital.

Original Country Man
Dr. Tweh writes

I write to express strong professional and ethical opposition to the recent release dated July 24, 2025, from the JFK Memorial Medical Center mandating that all patients undergoing Caesarean section (C-section) must make full deposits for specific services prior to surgery.
While we recognize the challenges of maintaining financial sustainability in healthcare service delivery, the implementation of such a policy violates key provisions of the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) Act, contravenes principles of medical jurisprudence, and poses serious risks to maternal and fetal health.
The LMDC Act of 2010, mandates all licensed medical practitioners to uphold the ethical standards of care, placing patient welfare above personal or institutional financial interest.

It specifically mandates that โ€œno medical practitioner shall refuse or delay medically necessary care to a patient in critical condition on the basis of inability to pay.โ€
A woman in need of an emergency C-section is, by definition, in critical condition. Requiring prior financial deposits for surgery delays care and creates a system that discriminates based on socio-economic status, directly violating this statutory obligation.
Any delay in surgical intervention due to non-payment may lead to maternal or neonatal morbidity or mortality, which amounts to gross medical negligence.
Patients must not be denied life saving interventions on financial grounds. Instituting a mandatory deposit system inherently privileges the affluent and undermines equal access to emergency obstetric care.
The Supreme Court has emphasized that the stateโ€™s duty to protect life and ensure reasonable access to emergency care is a fundamental responsibility of health care professionals.
Similarly, in Doe v. Redemption Hospital (2021), the Liberian Medical and Dental Council reprimanded medical administrators who required advance payments for emergency maternal care, reinforcing the idea that emergency obstetric services must not be withheld for financial reasons.

Healthcare is a human right. No woman should have to choose between life and a ledger. The current policy, if implemented, will cost lives, violate the law, and expose practitioners to disciplinary action and litigation.
I strongly urge that this release be withdrawn or revised to reflect the ethical and legal obligations of the medical profession in Liberia.

BREAKING NEWS: Former Liberian President George Weah Condemns Ouattaraโ€™s Third-Term Bid, Criticizes ECOWAS Silence

Monrovia, Liberia โ€“ Former President of Liberia, George Manneh Weah, has strongly condemned Ivorian President Alassane Dramane Ouattaraโ€™s decision to seek another term in office, labeling the move as โ€œunconstitutionalโ€ and a threat to democratic stability in the West African region.

In a statement issued Monday, Weah described President Ouattaraโ€™s intentions as an โ€œinstitutional power grabโ€, warning that such actions undermine democratic governance and set a dangerous precedent across the region.

โ€œAs long as ECOWAS tolerates unconstitutional acts, it paves the way for life presidencies, military takeovers, and violence,โ€ Weah asserted. โ€œWe cannot denounce military coups while turning a blind eye to constitutional abuses.โ€

Weah also expressed disappointment in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for what he characterized as a troubling silence in the face of political overreach.

โ€œThe credibility of ECOWAS is at stake. Its silence in this matter speaks volumes. The organization must act in the true interest of West African citizens by upholding democratic values and constitutional order,โ€ Weah emphasized.

He urged regional leaders to ensure that principles of democracy and rule of law are applied consistently, warning that selective enforcement could erode public trust and fuel instability.

President Ouattaraโ€™s announcement to run for another term has reignited controversy and concern within and beyond Cรดte d'Ivoire, as critics argue it violates constitutional term limits. The situation adds to growing tensions in the region, where democratic backsliding and political unrest have increasingly become points of concern.

As regional and international stakeholders watch closely, Weahโ€™s remarks may signal rising frustration among former and current leaders over the handling of governance challenges in West Africa.
