ECOWAS Delegation Arrives in Liberia to Combat Drug Abuse and Mental Health Crisis Among Youth.
A high-level ECOWAS delegation has arrived in Monrovia, Liberia, to spearhead a regional sensitization campaign addressing the growing threat of drug abuse and mental health issues among West African youth.
This initiative, which precedes the August 7 โSay No to Drugsโ Awareness Rally, is part of a broader partnership between the ECOWAS Parliament and the Liberian government. Led by Bomi County Senator Edwin Snowe, the delegation aims to harmonize regional drug laws and strengthen preventive and enforcement measures, particularly in Mano River Union countries.
During their visit, the ECOWAS team held meetings with key Liberian ministries and agencies, including Health, Education, Gender, and the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, to promote inter-agency coordination and community-based solutions. Officials like Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Nyei and Health Minister Dr. Louise Gboto praised the initiative and President Boakaiโs leadership, while also acknowledging the need for more political commitment and institutional support. Monrovia Mayor John Siafa highlighted the urgency of protecting vulnerable youth, especially teenage girls, from the drug epidemic.
The delegation, which includes lawmakers and health advocates from across West Africa, is also engaging directly with affected youth, rehabilitation centers, and civil society groups. Their mission will conclude with a national rally and dialogue on August 7, where youth, government leaders, and stakeholders will unite in a show of solidarity. The ECOWAS Parliament, represented by figures like Cape Verdean MP Orlando Pereira Dias, is emphasizing the need for youth empowerment through job creation, emotional support, and rehabilitationโsignaling a unified West African response to a regional crisis.
