Public Works Ministry Clarifies Japan Freeway Project, Condemns Alleged Intimidation.

September 4, 2026

The Ministry of Public Works has clarified that the Japan Freeway extension project from Freeport to Gabriel Tucker Bridge is supported by a grant from the Government and people of Japan.
The clarification comes following an alleged incident involving the harassment of a freelance content creator at the project site.

The Ministry said the content creator had gone to the site to livestream the ongoing road construction when some workers allegedly attempted to prevent the individual from documenting the project.
In a statement, the Ministry condemned the reported conduct and said workers employed on public infrastructure projects are expected to perform their contractual duties without determining who is permitted to document public works.

The Ministry said citizens, journalists, media practitioners, and freelance content creators have a legitimate interest in observing and reporting on public infrastructure projects, subject to applicable laws and safety requirements.
It, however, urged anyone entering an active construction site to comply with legitimate safety instructions and reasonable access protocols.

The Ministry warned that safety and operational requirements must not become a pretext for intimidation, harassment, or threats.
It has therefore urged contractors and their employees to exercise professionalism and resolve disagreements through appropriate institutional channels.

BREAKING NEWS

SUPREME COURT DENIES WRIT OF PROHIBITION

The Supreme Court of Liberia has denied the Writ of Prohibition filed by former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and other defendants in the Capitol Arson Case.

The defendants had sought the Supreme Court’s intervention in the proceedings, including concerns surrounding the jury and the conduct of the trial.

⚖️ However, the denial of the writ does NOT, by itself, mean that the Supreme Court ruled that the jury was compromised. The Court’s specific reasoning and findings in its ruling will determine what the decision means for the jury issue and the continuation of the case.

The denial means the defendants did not obtain the extraordinary relief they requested from the Supreme Court, and the proceedings may therefore continue unless another legal remedy or order intervenes.

📌 More details will follow as we review the Supreme Court’s full ruling.

FORMER WEST AFRICAN BAR ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT CRITICIZES NBA INVITATION TO GEORGE WEAH

A former president of the West African Bar Association has criticized the decision to invite former Liberian President George Manneh Weah to address the Nigerian Bar Association’s annual conference, questioning whether leaders accused of undermining the rule of law should be invited to speak at major legal gatherings.

Speaking as a panelist at the association’s 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, held under the theme “Beyond Limits,” the former bar leader called on the Nigerian legal community to reconsider inviting African leaders whom he described as dictators.

He specifically criticized Weah’s administration, alleging that it interfered with judicial independence and failed to fully implement certain judgments of the ECOWAS Court of Justice during Weah’s presidency from 2018 to 2024.

The speaker cited cases involving residents of the Madingo region and a former associate justice of Liberia’s Supreme Court, alleging that judgments involving property rights and the judge’s reinstatement and compensation were not properly implemented under the Weah administration.

“Now, that is the man coming here to talk to us about the rule of law and democracy,” he said.

He also raised concerns about Liberia’s ongoing drug crisis and referenced allegations involving former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor. Those allegations remain matters for legal authorities and the courts to establish.

The former bar president further questioned Weah’s decision to travel to Qatar to watch his son, Timothy Weah, represent the United States during an international football tournament, arguing that the former president should have remained focused on Liberia’s affairs.

Meanwhile, Weah used his keynote address to emphasize the importance of democratic institutions, constitutional governance, and an independent judiciary across Africa.

He warned that elections alone do not guarantee democracy, arguing that elected leaders can still become authoritarian when they weaken institutions and undermine judicial independence.

“A tyrant with a certificate of return is still a tyrant,” Weah told the conference.

The contrasting remarks have sparked renewed debate about leadership, judicial independence, democratic accountability, and the rule of law in Africa.

Background of Major General Daniel D. Ziankahn

Major General Daniel Dee Ziankahn, Jr. is a highly experienced Liberian military and security professional whose career spans many years of national service.

He was commissioned into the Armed Forces of Liberia in 2006 after completing his initial military training. He subsequently completed additional professional military training in Liberia and abroad.

Over the course of his career, Ziankahn served in numerous command and operational positions, including platoon leader, executive officer, company commander, brigade commander, military assistant, and Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations. He eventually became Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia from February 11, 2014, to February 6, 2018, becoming the first post-war Liberian to hold that position.

His professional education includes a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Management, a Master of Military Art and Science, and executive-level studies in senior government management and national and international security.

Ziankahn has also participated in numerous regional and international security conferences, seminars, and professional programs, giving him experience beyond Liberia’s borders. His career has included responsibility for operations, command, strategic planning, security coordination, personnel, and military administration.

He is also a recipient of several honors and distinctions recognizing his military leadership and professional service.

Why his reported LDEA appointment is significant

If the reported appointment as Director General of the LDEA is formally confirmed, Ziankahn would be entering the position with a background heavily centered on command, security operations, discipline, intelligence coordination, and institutional leadership.

That experience could be particularly important at a time when Liberia is dealing with major narcotics investigations and public concerns about the effectiveness and integrity of drug-enforcement operations.

His biggest challenge will be transforming his extensive security experience into effective drug-enforcement leadership—including strengthening investigations, protecting evidence, improving intelligence operations, holding personnel accountable, and maintaining public confidence.

The reported appointments of Precious Rue as Deputy Director for Operations and Prince Mulbah as Deputy Director for Administration would give the new leadership structure separate operational and administrative responsibilities.

One important note: I found official biographical records confirming Ziankahn’s military career and his appointment by President Boakai as Military Adviser in 2024, but I have not yet found an official source confirming the reported August 2026 LDEA appointment.

So for publication, I would describe the LDEA appointment as reported until the formal appointment announcement is released.

President Boakai Orders Immediate Investigation into LDEA Matter

Saturday, August 8, 2026

Executive Mansion, Monrovia:– President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has acknowledged the communication from the Minister of Justice and Attorney General regarding the recusal of the Officer in Charge of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitzgerald T. M. Biago.

Following a review of the communication, the President has directed the Minister of Justice to immediately launch a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the allegations and all related circumstances surrounding the matter.

The Minister of Justice has been instructed to submit a detailed report to the President within forty eight (48) hours.

President Boakai reaffirmed that his Administration remains unwavering in its fight against illegal drugs, organized crime, and corruption, and emphasized that no individual or institution is above the law. He stressed that the investigation must be thorough, objective, and guided solely by the facts.

Upon receipt of the investigation report, the President will carefully review its findings and determine the appropriate course of action in the best interest of justice, accountability, and the people of Liberia.

The move comes in the wake of emerging public allegations and social media reports linking a pickup truck, allegedly connected to a narcotics suspect or trafficker to the LDEA OIC’s office.

In his letter to the Minister of Justice, LDEA OIC Biago, said he was taking a recusal from his active duties and functions as head of the LDEA. This move, he noted, is aimed at preserving the utmost integrity, transparency, and public trust of the national anti-drug campaign and to ensure an unhindered, credible administrative and security investigation.

Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti Denies Drug Scandal Allegations, Says U.S. Support Strengthens Liberia’s Investigation

Monrovia, Liberia — Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, has strongly rejected allegations linking her to the ongoing drug trafficking investigation involving the seizure of narcotics reportedly valued at US$317 million.

Minister Nyanti described the accusations as “unprofessional, unpatriotic, unethical, unacceptable, misleading, and entirely false,” arguing that such claims are aimed at undermining public confidence in the investigation and damaging Liberia’s growing international reputation.

Speaking through the Ministry of Information, Madam Nyanti said the allegations represent an attempt to distract attention from Liberia’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with international partners and improve the country’s image on the global stage.

According to the Foreign Minister, the investigation has received increased attention and support from international partners, including the United States. She disclosed that the White House Situation Room contacted her following reports of the major drug seizure, with discussions focused on the ongoing investigation and cooperation between Liberia and the United States.

Minister Nyanti emphasized that Liberia’s commitment to fighting organized crime, drug trafficking, and other transnational threats remains firm. She said the government will continue working with national and international institutions to ensure that investigations are conducted professionally and based on facts.

The Foreign Minister also cautioned against spreading unverified information, stressing the importance of evidence-based reporting and responsible public discussion, especially on issues involving national security and international relations.

The allegations come as Liberian authorities continue investigations into the major drug seizure, with officials maintaining that all individuals connected to the matter must be subjected to due process and the rule of law.

The government has repeatedly stated that the investigation will follow legal procedures and that anyone found responsible based on credible evidence will be held accountable.

Rep. Mulbah Urges Gov't to Reduce Four-Lane Highway Project to Sierra Leone Border With Two-Lane, Invest Savings in Monrovia Roads

Montserrado County District 3 Representative Sumo Mulbah has called on President Joseph Boakai and the Ministry of Public Works to reconsider plans for the proposed four-lane highway stretching from Bomi and Grand Cape Mount counties to the Sierra Leone border.

In an open letter addressed to the President, Mulbah argued that the Bomi–Cape Mount corridor lacks traffic volume and population density necessary to justify a four-lane highway. He maintained that the route is unlikely to experience traffic levels requiring such expansion even decades from now.

Mulbah called on the government to reduce the road construction to a two-lane highway, noting that Sierra Leone's connecting border road is a standard two-lane highway.

The Montserrado D #3 Lawmaker explained that Liberia should adopt a similarly practical approach instead of committing significant resources to a wider road. He recommended that the government limit the four-lane expansion to the heavily congested Duala-to-Iron Gate section, where traffic congestion is most severe, while constructing the remainder of the corridor to the Sierra Leone border as a durable two-lane highway.

According to Mulbah, reducing the size of the border highway would free up financial resources that could instead be invested in major urban road projects, including the long-discussed Barnesville-to-Sinkor connection, commonly known as Kesselly Boulevard.

He said completing strategic urban road links would help ease persistent congestion on Somalia Drive and improve transportation within Monrovia.

According to the lawmaker, the extensive land clearing along the route suggests the government intends to construct a four-lane highway. While welcoming efforts to improve road connectivity to the country's western border, he questioned whether the proposed design reflects Liberia's actual transportation needs.

Representative Mulbah also raised concerns about the long-term durability of highways, arguing that heavy-duty trucks transporting iron ore from mining concessions pose a greater threat to public road infrastructure than ordinary passenger vehicles.

The lawmaker warned that allowing concession trucks to operate extensively on newly paved highways would accelerate road deterioration, potentially reducing the lifespan of costly infrastructure investments.

To address that challenge, Mulbah is proposing the development of a state-owned railway system dedicated to transporting mineral exports while also serving the general public.

Under his proposal, mining companies would use the railway to move iron ore to port facilities, reducing pressure on national highways, while the same network could provide affordable long-distance transportation for passengers and traders.

The Montserrado District-3 Lawmaker made the recommendation after recently traveling through Bomi and Grand Cape Mount counties to the Sierra Leone during a trip connected to an alleged murder investigation.
