Spanish Civil Guard officials confirmed that the two brothers were killed when their vehicle, reportedly a Lamborghini, veered off the A-52 highway in the municipality of Cernadilla and subsequently caught fire. Initial investigations suggest a possible tire blowout while attempting to overtake another vehicle led to the fatal loss of control. Firefighters were dispatched to extinguish the burning car and a spreading grass fire caused by the impact.

PSG Clinches Historic Treble with 5–0 Triumph Over Inter Milan in Champions League Final | By: TPA Sports Desk | www.thepointafricanews.com/sports

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) delivered a commanding performance to defeat Inter Milan 5–0 in the 2024–25 UEFA Champions League final at Munich's Allianz Arena, securing their first-ever European Cup and completing a historic continental treble.

Under the guidance of manager Luis Enrique, PSG showcased their dominance throughout the match, with standout performances from Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The victory adds to their Ligue 1 and Coupe de France titles, marking the most successful season in the club's history.

Inter Milan, managed by Simone Inzaghi, struggled to contain PSG's relentless attack. Despite a strong campaign that included victories over Bayern Munich and Barcelona, the Italian side was unable to replicate their previous successes in the final.

The match was officiated by Romanian referee István Kovács, who managed the game effectively, allowing for a free-flowing contest.

PSG's triumph not only signifies their rise in European football but also marks them as the first French club since Marseille in 1993 to win the Champions League. The comprehensive victory underscores the team's evolution and resilience following the departure of key players in previous seasons.

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada says he won’t dwell on his one-month suspension for recreational drug use during the SA20 — and he won’t be “Mr I-Apologise-Too-Much” either.

The pace ace, who returned to training this week, admitted to the misstep but emphasized growth over guilt. “Life moves on,” Rabada told reporters, as he eyes a strong comeback and shifts focus to future tournaments.

Chelsea Clinches Historic UEFA Conference League Title
By: TPA Sports Desk | www.thepointafrica.com/sports

Chelsea FC secured a commanding 4–1 victory over Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final held in Wrocław, Poland, on May 28, 2025. This triumph marks Chelsea as the first club to win all five major UEFA men's competitions: the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup, and the now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup .

Despite an early setback with Abde Ezzalzouli giving Betis a 1–0 lead in the 9th minute, Chelsea's second-half resurgence was spearheaded by Cole Palmer. Palmer provided two assists within five minutes, setting up goals for Enzo Fernández and Nicolas Jackson. Jadon Sancho and Moisés Caicedo added late goals to seal the victory .

This win not only adds to Chelsea's European accolades but also ends a long-standing streak of Spanish dominance in European finals, with Chelsea becoming the first non-Spanish team to defeat a Spanish club in a European final since 2001 .

Barcelona's Lamine Yamal Signs Landmark Contract Extension Through 2031 | By: TPA Sports Desk | www.thepointafricanews.com/sports

FC Barcelona has officially announced the contract extension of their prodigious talent, Lamine Yamal, securing his services until June 30, 2031. The new agreement, set to commence upon his 18th birthday on July 13, 2025, underscores the club's commitment to nurturing homegrown talent and fortifying their future.

Yamal's journey with Barcelona began at the esteemed La Masia academy, where his exceptional skills quickly set him apart. He made history on April 29, 2023, by debuting for the senior team at just 15 years, 9 months, and 16 days old, becoming the youngest player to feature for Barcelona in a La Liga match.

In the 2024–25 season, Yamal's impact was profound. He played a pivotal role in Barcelona's domestic treble, contributing 18 goals and 25 assists across 55 matches. His stellar performances have positioned him as a strong contender for the Ballon d'Or.

The new contract reflects Yamal's rising prominence. Reports indicate a significant salary increase, with figures suggesting a base annual salary of €15 million, potentially rising to €20 million with performance-related bonuses. This positions him among the highest earners at the club, alongside seasoned players like Robert Lewandowski.

To deter potential suitors and emphasize his value, the contract includes a staggering €1 billion release clause. This move mirrors the club's strategy to retain top talent and build a team around key players.

Internationally, Yamal has already made waves. He debuted for Spain's senior national team on September 8, 2023, scoring in a 7–1 victory over Georgia. At 16 years and 57 days old, he became the youngest player to score for Spain, breaking previous records.

African Football Legends Play Historic Match in Mogadishu to Promote Peace | By: TPA News Desk | www.thepointafricanews.com/sports | Mogadishu, Somalia

In support of Somali football and peacebuilding efforts, three of Africa’s most iconic football stars—Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon, Nigeria’s Jay-Jay Okocha, and Togo’s Emmanuel Adebayor—touched down in Mogadishu for a historic visit culminating in an exhibition match at Mogadishu Stadium.

Their arrival marked the start of a FIFA- and CAF-endorsed “Legendary Peace Tour,” aimed at assessing Somalia’s readiness to host international football competitions for the first time in over three decades. The delegation also included senior officials from the Confederation of African Football and FIFA, who toured key infrastructure and engaged local football stakeholders.

The highlight of the visit was a symbolic match held Tuesday afternoon at Mogadishu Stadium, where the legends joined Somali national team players and officials in front of a jubilant crowd. For many, it was the first time witnessing an international-style match within the country since the early days of civil conflict.

“This is more than a football game—it’s a message of hope and unity,” said Somalia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Barre, who called the event a “pivotal step in Somalia’s sports diplomacy and peace process.”

The stadium, recently refurbished under government and international partnerships, is central to Somalia’s ambition to be reinstated as a host for FIFA-sanctioned fixtures between 2026 and 2030. The African Development Bank and other stakeholders have backed parallel reconstruction efforts in youth development and public sports infrastructure.

CAF and FIFA officials praised the Somali government’s commitment to restoring football as a tool for reconciliation and development. They noted the importance of leveraging sport to rebuild national pride and promote peace in post-conflict states.

For the thousands who attended—and the millions watching online—the presence of Eto’o, Okocha, and Adebayor was not just nostalgic; it was inspirational.

“Somalia is ready,” said Eto’o in a post-match address. “This country deserves to see its youth shine on the global stage—and we are here to help make that happen.”
