Supreme Court Says CDC Can Only Buy Headquarters Land at Owner’s Price

The Supreme Court has ended a long-running fight over who owns the land where the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) headquarters sits.

The court ruled that the property legally belongs to the late Martha Stubblefield Bernard, not the CDC, and her estate is now asking the party to pay US$4.2 million in cash if it wants to stay.

The decision means the CDC has lost its claim that it should be allowed to buy the land at the old price it negotiated years ago, before members of the Bernard family began fighting over the property in court.

The court explained that while Archibald Bernard’s mother has rights to some other family properties, this particular piece of land belonged to his late father's wife at the time of his death, Martha Stubblefield Bernard.

She later bought the land, making her the legal owner.

The court ruling gave her estate, led by Ebrima Varney Dempster, full control over the sale.

Before the final judgment was even announced, the estate’s lawyers, J. Johnny Momoh & Associates, wrote to CDC Acting Chairman Janga Kowo on August 8, 2024.

In the letter, they said the estate is giving the CDC the first chance to buy the land, but only if it pays US$4.2 million in cash.

The lawyers warned that there are two other interested buyers, both church groups.

One of them has already agreed to buy the property for US$2.5 million if the CDC turns down the offer.

The lawyers also told the CDC to leave the property while talks continue, reminding the party that the Supreme Court ruling allows them to be evicted if the sale is not completed.

They stressed that “time is of the essence” and that the CDC must respond quickly.

Religious Institutions Expressed Interest In CDC Headquarters as Eviction Looms — One Offers US$2.5M

Monrovia – Two separate church institutions have expressed interest in acquiring the headquarters of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) should the party be forced to vacate its current premises in Congo Town.

In a letter dated August 8, 2025, addressed to the CDC, lawyers representing the Intestate Estate of the late Martha Stubblefield Bernard confirmed that negotiations have been held with both religious institutions. While the communication withheld the names of the churches, it revealed that one had already reached a conditional purchase agreement with the property owner.

The arrangement reportedly sets the price at US$2.5 million, contingent upon the CDC failing to exercise its first right of refusal. This means the party will have the priority opportunity to purchase the land before any sale to another party.

However, the estate has set a significantly higher asking price for the CDC — US$4.2 million — for the 4.23 acres of prime real estate currently housing the party’s national headquarters.

The revelation comes amid ongoing legal proceedings over the property, raising questions about the party’s ability to meet the financial demand and maintain ownership of its political home base.

The potential involvement of church institutions adds a new twist to the high-profile dispute, which has attracted public attention due to the CDC’s history and its prominence as the country’s largest opposition party.

If the party fails to secure the property, the sale could mark the end of an era for the CDC in Congo Town, where it has operated for years as a rallying point for its members and political activities.

UP Youth Congress Demands Names of Alleged Drug Traffickers in Government

The Unity Party National Youth Congress (UPNYC) has taken serious note of the grave and alarming allegations made by the Deputy Director General of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Mr. Gwee Forkpa, during the Ministry of Information’s August 12, 2025 press briefing, wherein he accused members of all three branches of the Liberian Government of being involved in the illicit drug trafficking.

The UPNYC finds these claims to be of the highest national security concern. If true, this suggests that the fight against drugs and narcotics in Liberia is being actively sabotaged from within the very institutions mandated to protect our people. This is unacceptable, intolerable, and constitutes a betrayal of the Liberian people.

We therefore, in the strongest and most unequivocal terms, call on Mr. Forkpa to immediately and publicly name the individuals, whether in the Executive, Legislative, or Judicial branches, whom he knows to be involved in drug trafficking or obstructing the national fight against narcotics. The Liberian people deserve to know the truth. The youth of this country will not stand by while shadowy figures in high offices destroy our future with drugs and impunity.

Should Mr. Forkpa fail to disclose these names within 72 hours, the Unity Party National Youth Congress will consider his statement as reckless, irresponsible, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public. In such a case, we will demand his resignation or dismissal for gross dereliction of duty and for undermining public trust in the national security apparatus.

The drug epidemic is ravaging our communities, destroying the minds of our young people, and threatening the very foundation of our nation. Anyone, no matter their position or influence, found aiding, abetting, or profiting from this scourge must face the full weight of the law.
The UPNYC stands ready to mobilize the youth of Liberia in the defense of our country’s future. The time for half-measures is over. The time for truth, justice, and accountability is now.

Police forwards Bishop’s Wife to Court for Assaulting Law enforcement Officer..

Liberia National Police – Official Statement

(Monrovia, Liberia – August 13, 2025) The Liberia National Police has formally charged Mrs. Klady A. Paul, a 67-year-old classroom teacher, for assaulting a police officer while he was performing his national duty.

On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at approximately 7:15 A.M., Mrs. Paul approached Patrolman Koilous N. Larmin at the 12th Street, Sinkor intersection in a hostile and disruptive manner. She verbally attacked the officer and other personnel on duty, then escalated her behavior into physical aggression, assaulting Patrolman Larmin and damaging a government-issued police communication radio.

Following a full investigation, Mrs. Paul has been charged with the following offenses under the Penal Code of the Republic of Liberia:
Simple Assault – Chapter 14, Section 14.21(A)
Criminal Mischief – Chapter 15, Section 15.5
Disorderly Conduct – Chapter 17, Section 17.3

She has been forwarded to court for prosecution.

The Liberia National Police has always upheld the principle of accountability, taking swift action when officers fall short of their duties or violate public trust. But just as we hold our officers accountable, we are equally bound to protect them when they are unjustly attacked while serving the nation.

We commend Patrolman Larmin for his resilience, professionalism, and restraint during the incident. His ability to maintain composure under pressure reflects the values and discipline expected of every officer in uniform, and is a clear indication of improvement in law-enforcement service delivery.

This case sends a clear message: there is zero tolerance for any form of assault, disrespect, or obstruction directed at officers in uniform. The law will be enforced without fear or favor.

LDEA Deputy Director says top Government officials are also involved in Drug Trade.

Deputy Director General of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Gwee Forkpa, has alleged that individuals within all three branches of the Liberian government are involved in the illicit drug trade.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, Forkpa said the country’s current anti-drug system is “so bad” compared to previous years. “From the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary—if you go into the sectors, you will find somebody involved with drugs,” he stated.

Forkpa recalled that during the administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the LDEA had stronger systems in place to combat narcotics. He stressed that fighting drugs in Liberia means “fighting people everywhere.”

Janga Augustus Kowo
Acting National Chairman at Congress for
Democratic Change (CDC)
Congo Town, Monrovia, Liberia

Ref: Letter Resignation

Dear Mr. Kowo,

I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign as a member of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), effective immediately. This decision has not been taken lightly, and I appreciate the opportunities I've had to serve our nation through the CDC.

As a grassroots Party founded in 2005 , the CDC has played a pivotal role in Liberian politics, growth and development.
However, I have come to realize that my vision for Liberia's future and my personal values are no longer aligned with the party's direction.

I want to express my gratitude to the leadership, members, and supporters of the CDC for their dedication and hard work. I have been honored to serve alongside such a talented and committed group of individuals.

As I move forward, I am committed to continuing my service to the people of Montserrado County and Liberia. I will always cherish the experiences and lessons learned during my time with the CDC.

Thank you for your understanding, and I wish the party continued success in its endeavors.

Sincerely,

Sign: Senator Saah H. Joseph
