Popular Liberian political commentator Henry Costa says he is returning to support President Joseph Boakai, citing what he described as the President’s strong performance. Costa, who supported the CDC and former President George Weah during the 2023 elections after previously criticizing Boakai, said his position has now changed. Speaking to followers on Facebook Live, Costa claimed Boakai is dismantling drug cartels he alleged were built under the Weah administration. β€œWho built the cartel? George Weah! Who is destroying the cartel? Joseph Boakai?” Costa exclaimed, signaling renewed support for the President. πŸ‡±πŸ‡·

Liberia’s Supreme Court has overturned the murder conviction and life sentence of Valington B. Kaiser, popularly known as β€œBishop,” and ordered his immediate release and restoration of his civil rights. Kaiser was convicted over the 2022 killing of 18-year-old Fatu Blasuwoah, who was found with multiple stab wounds in Gardnerville. A 12-member jury found him guilty in March 2023 after prosecutors presented CCTV footage, forensic evidence and witnesses. However, the Supreme Court, in a decision delivered Friday, cited serious inconsistencies in the CCTV evidence and forensic examination of the alleged murder weapon. Justice Yusuf D. Kaba said the contradictions created reasonable doubt requiring Kaiser's acquittal.

Liberia has moved from civil conflict to peaceful elections, but renowned human rights lawyer Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe says democracy must now deliver better living conditions for ordinary citizens. In a commentary, Gongloe argues that elections alone are insufficient when poverty, corruption and excessive government privileges persist. He points to Botswana, Mauritius, Cape Verde and Seychelles as examples of African nations turning democratic governance and resources into economic progress. Gongloe says Liberia’s abundant natural resourcesβ€”including gold, diamonds, iron ore, timber, rubber and forestsβ€”must generate shared prosperity. He particularly calls for improved healthcare infrastructure and diagnostic equipment to reduce costly overseas medical referrals. He also urges voters to reject vote-buying and choose leaders based on integrity, competence and credible development plans. β€œGovernment is a place to serve, not to steal,” he writes.
