LIBERIA – The Liberian Police are investigating the mysterious killing of one of its officers. The remains of officer James Gargu, of the police elite Unit-Emergency Response Unit (ERU), was discovered in mid-November near a train track on the outskirts of Buchanan City, in the southern seaport county of Grand Bassa.

Eyewitnesses say officer Gargu was allegedly found dead with all his personal belongings in tact-pistol strapped to his side and money found in his pocket.

Liberia National Police announced it has arrested and is investigating Seven suspects for their alleged complicity in the case.

A Police Statement alleged shooting took place on November 14, 2022, at 8: 30 PM when victim Gargu and Two Community Watch Forum (CWF) members allegedly went to effect an arrest in Block-C, New Buchanan Community.

The Police statement did not indicate who did the shooting or whether the ERU officer died of bullet sounds.

The LNP only said it is investigating the seven suspects to establish circumstances under which its officer died gruesomely. The statement alleged their officer dies at the hands of mobbed actors, most of whom were said to be drug consumers.

The death of the officer has increased fear in the county which has a history of mysterious killings. Some residents told our Buchanan to correspond that a armed elite officer can be killed, which simply amplifies fear of insecurity in the county.

Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to Manchester United's first-team after drawing a line under his spat with manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo had been training alone since being banished from the first-team squad after refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last week.

The Portuguese striker rejected a request to go on with five minutes to go and stormed down the tunnel at Old Trafford before the full-time whistle during their 2-0 win over Antonio Conte's side on Wednesday.

Ten Hag and Ronaldo held clear-the-air talks today with the outcome a positive one. As a result, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is now in contention to play at home to Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday night.

South Africa's Jacob Zuma set free after prison term ends
AfricanewsOct 7, 2022Read original

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been set free following the expiry of his prison sentence for contempt of court, a government department said on Friday.
Zuma received a 15-month sentence last year after he ignored instructions to participate in a corruption inquiry.

He handed himself in on July 7 last year to begin his sentence, triggering the worst violence South Africa had seen in years as his angry supporters took to the streets.

In a statement, Zuma said he felt relieved to be a free man and thanked his supporters.

"The... messages of support on social media and other platforms kept me strong and focused on ensuring that those who wanted to break my spirit and resolve do not succeed," he said.

Zuma was released on medical parole in September 2021. But in December, the high court set aside the parole decision and ordered him to return to jail. Zuma appealed the ruling and remained on parole pending the appeal outcome.

Qatar World Cup will be my last – Messi
VanguardngrOct 6, 2022Read original

By Efosa Taiwo
Argentine star, Lionel Messi has said that the FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be his last appearance at the apex competition.

“This will be my last World Cup — for sure. The decision has been made,” the 35-year-old was quoted as saying.

“I’m counting down the days until the World Cup. “The truth is, there’s a little anxiety, saying: ‘Well, we’re here, what’s going to happen? It’s my last one, how’s it going to go?’. On one hand, I can’t wait for it to arrive but I’m also desperate for it to go well,” he added.

“We’re at a very good moment, with a very strong group, but anything can happen at a World Cup. All the matches are difficult, that is what makes a World Cup so special because the favourites are not always the ones who end up winning or even doing as well as you expect.

“I don’t know if we are the favourites, but Argentina in itself is always a candidate for history, for what it means. We are not the favourites, I think there are other teams that are above us.”

The former Barcelona forward is set to play in his fifth World Cup in Qatar – he has scored six goals in the previous four editions of the tournament.

In 2014, the PSG star came close to clinching the crown as he led Argentina to the final where they were beaten 1-0 by Germany after extra-time.

Messi will, however, have his eyes set on bowing out on a high by winning the World Cup in Qatar when the tournament begins in November.

Though his club future is still under speculation, the Argentine is expected to make a final call on it after the World Cup.

African Union condemns latest coup in Burkina Faso calling it ‘unconstitutional’
MaravipostOct 1, 2022Read original

The African Union has condemned what it called the “unconstitutional change of government” in Burkina Faso.

On Friday, Junior officers overthrew Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba who, in January, installed himself as leader of the country of 16 million after accusing elected president Roch Marc Christian Kabore of failing to beat back the jihadists.

As soldiers took over state TV on Friday evening they said 34-year-old Captain Ibrahim Traore was in charge.

In the capital Ouagadougou people have been reacting to the latest political development to hit Burkina Faso.

Local resident, Francois Kaboré, said: “He could no longer manage the security issue. Many people died and more and more criminals approached the big cities. So, many people were not happy with that.”

Another citizen, Alidou Pitroipa, felt it was not the way to resolve disagreements with political leaders.

“If there was a problem between the soldiers, discuss it between you, to find the right solution.,” he said “It’s not the right solution to overthrow the power. That means, with this kind of situation, you don’t know when it’s going to end.”

Head of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said he was deeply concerned about the resurgence of unconstitutional ousters in Burkina Faso and he demanded the restoration of the constitutional order by July 2024.

Burkina Faso’s former colonial ruler France told its citizens in Ouagadougou, believed to number between 4,000 and 5,000, to stay home, while the European Union expressed “concern” at the unfolding events.

The United States called “for a return to calm and restraint by all actors”.

Over 3,000 vehicles queue as thousands of Russian men flee to Georgia to escape being mobilized by Putin in the war against Ukraine (video)
LindaikejisblogSep 27, 2022

Russian men are fleeing into neighbouring Georgia to avoid being called-up to fight in a war they do not believe in, following Russian President Vladimir Putin's order to mobilise hundreds of thousands of reservists for the conflict in Ukraine.

According to Russia's own government statistics released by state media reported, on Sunday, September 25 the estimated wait to enter Georgia hit 48 hours, with more than 3,000 vehicles queuing to cross the frontier.

"When we found out about the mobilisation, we dropped everything at home and jumped in the car," Dmitry Kuriliyunok told Reuters in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital.

Dmitry, his wife Irina and young daughter first drove across southern Russia from Krasnodar to Mineralnye Vody in the North Caucasus, a staging post for many crossing into Georgia. There, they hired a local driver to take them through the border checkpoints and after 24 hours they arrived in Tbilisi.

"We are completely against this war. For us, like for others, it's scary. To die and to kill others, and for what? We don't understand. Therefore, we decided to flee," he said.

The exact number of people who have left Russia since Putin announced what he called a "partial mobilisation" last Wednesday is unclear. But new video footage released Monday show a chaotic scene at the border.

Russians have also gone to Kazakhstan, Finland and Mongolia, which have all reported heavy queues. Russia has not closed its borders yet but reports indicated that Putin could order a border closure.

Gunman opens fire at recruitment office and wounds recruitment officer as he protests against Russian enlistment
LindaikejisblogSep 26, 2022Read original

A gunman opened fire at a conscription office in Russia today, September 26, to protest against enlistment in the Russia-Ukraine war, amid Vladimir Putin’s mobilisation.

He critically wounded a recruitment officer at the enlistment centre in Siberia, the local governor confirmed.

The incident occurred in the town of Ust-Ilimsk in Irkutsk.

This comes as Russians across the country voiced their disapproval at being conscripted, with countless people fleeing across borders.

Governor Igor Kobzev said in a message on Telegram: "In Ust-Ilimsk, a young man fired at the military registration and enlistment office."

Mr Kobzev said a military commissar had been wounded in the shooting and was in a critical condition in hospital.

Video published on social media shows a man identifying himself to police officers as 25-year-old Ruslan Zinin.

A separate video of the shooting shows a man firing at least one shot inside the draft office and people fleeing for their lives.

Others inside the building immediately ran away as the shooting took place.

Reports suggest the local man shouted "no-one’s going to fight" before firing the shot gun.

"We’re all going home now," he is said to have added.

A number of draft offices have been attacked since the Russian President declared a partial mobilisation last Wednesday.
