IAEA Director General Makes Historic Visit to Liberia, Announces Support for Health and Development

By: P. Vangerline Kpotoe

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – July 3, 2025 — In a historic first, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, has arrived in Liberia to strengthen cooperation in peaceful nuclear applications. This visit marks the first time an IAEA chief has officially visited the country since Liberia joined the agency in 1962.

Speaking during an interview, Director General Grossi expressed delight at being in Liberia and emphasized the significance of the visit. “This is long overdue,” he said, “but I’m happy to be here. We’re going to be working on a number of critical areas—mainly cancer treatment, nuclear medicine, agriculture, and water resource management.”

Grossi outlined the IAEA’s commitment to advancing development in Liberia through peaceful nuclear technology. Unlike nuclear energy, which involves power generation, the focus of this visit is on nuclear applications that improve health and agriculture.

One of the key initiatives is the establishment of a new radiotherapy unit at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital. The IAEA will support the project with advanced medical equipment and professional training for Liberian healthcare workers. “The impact of cancer in Liberia is quite high,” Grossi noted. “We want to improve that by making technology available and empowering Liberian professionals to better serve their communities.”

The Director General also hinted at the potential for Liberia to explore nuclear energy solutions in the future. “Nuclear energy is clean and should not be reserved for a handful of countries,” he said. “We’re seeing growing interest across Africa—in Ghana, Senegal, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and others. Why not Liberia as well?”

During his visit, Grossi is expected to meet with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Energy, and other key officials to discuss ongoing and future IAEA-supported projects.

This landmark visit signals a renewed partnership between Liberia and the IAEA, with promising prospects for the country’s healthcare system, agricultural productivity, and possibly, long-term energy development.

President Boakai Returns from Successful Regional Engagements in Nigeria

Monrovia, June 23, 2025 President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has returned to Liberia following his participation in the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held in Lagos, Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists upon his arrival at Roberts International Airport, President Boakai described the commemorative event as a significant milestone for the region. He praised ECOWAS for its ongoing contributions to peace, democracy, economic development, and the facilitation of free movement of people and goods across West Africa.

“ECOWAS has remained a pillar of stability and progress in our region,” President Boakai said. “Liberia stands firmly committed to its mission and values.”

The President reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to strengthening regional integration and fostering deeper economic partnerships. He particularly emphasized the importance of boosting intra-regional trade as a critical pathway toward shared prosperity and a more united West Africa.

President Boakai’s participation in the high-level gathering underscores Liberia’s active engagement in regional affairs and its determination to contribute to a more cohesive and resilient West African community.

Neglected building turned fresh just for funeral service.

Ahead of the Reburial and the Burial of late president Doe and his wife which set for June 27, 2025.

Grandgedians give a good facelift to late, former president Doe abandoned, building just for the occasion.

With what I have observed, our leaders often build structures whether homes, monuments, or public buildings as symbols of their power or achievements during their lifetime. But these are usually built with short-term political goals in mind, not necessarily long-term sustainability or usefulness. After they pass, if there's no clear plan for upkeep or if the family lacks resources or interest, those structures naturally fall into neglect.

Former president Weah Writes

STATEMENT ON LIBERIA’S ELECTION AS A NON-PERMANENT MEMBER OF THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL

June 3 2025

Today marks a proud moment for our beloved country.

Liberia has secured a seat at the global table as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

I extend heartfelt appreciation to the Government of Liberia, led by President Joseph Boakai, for ensuring that this monumental national aspiration came to a successful conclusion.

My sincere thanks also go to ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), and all local and international stakeholders who supported Liberia from the onset and followed through today with a resounding vote.

When we began this journey, the goal was clear: to claim Liberia’s rightful place on the world stage and advance global peace and security. Now, with this opportunity, we reaffirm our commitment to championing these ideals while advocating tirelessly for Liberia.

I call on all Liberians to use this landmark achievement to work in the collective interest of our common patrimony, Liberia.

God Bless Liberia!
