LPRA Begins Assessment After Reports of Oily Substance in Grand Bassa

The Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Authority (LPRA) says it has launched an investigation following reports of an oily substance discovered in Beon’s Town, Grand Bassa County.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Authority said it is aware of recent public discussions surrounding the suspected substance and reminded the public that Liberia’s Petroleum Exploration and Production Law of 2016 outlines a strict procedure for reporting and communicating any potential hydrocarbon findings.

According to the LPRA, the process exists to prevent premature speculation and to ensure that all information shared with the public has undergone proper technical review.

The Authority disclosed that it began field assessments on December 3 and has already provided preliminary updates to relevant stakeholders, including the Office of the President. The LPRA said it will issue a comprehensive technical report and a formal public statement once its evaluation is complete.

In the meantime, the LPRA is advising the public to avoid drawing conclusions and to refrain from contacting the substance until scientific analysis is finalized. It also urged residents in the area to stay clear of the material as a safety precaution.

The institution emphasized the need for responsible, evidence-based communication consistent with established protocols and best practices in the oil and gas sector.

The LPRA thanked the public for its patience as the investigation continues.

Liberia Secures Place in EU’s €12M SCOPE Africa Port Security Initiative

The National Port Authority (NPA) of Liberia has earned a major milestone on the international maritime stage, following its admission into SCOPE Africa, a €12 million European Union–sponsored program dedicated to strengthening port security and governance across West and Central Africa.

The initiative, unveiled recently in Lomé and jointly implemented by Expertise France and Enabel, targets ten ports across nine countries. Its goal is to build safer, more resilient, and professionally managed maritime corridors capable of meeting rising global security and trade demands.

Liberia’s selection comes as a direct result of its increased engagement and reform efforts within the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA).

NPA Deputy Managing Director for Administration, Hon. James R. Benard, welcomed the development, calling it “a strong vote of confidence in the ambitious transformation we have begun at the Freeport of Monrovia and our outstation ports.” He noted that participation in SCOPE Africa will provide Liberia with critical technical support, modern security tools, and broader alignment with international maritime standards.

The program specifically aims to address a range of growing threats—terrorism, organized criminal activities, industrial hazards, and climate-related vulnerabilities. To confront these challenges, SCOPE Africa will deliver key upgrades in:
• Port safety and security compliance
• Crisis preparedness and risk mitigation
• Workforce development with emphasis on youth and women
• Strengthened cooperation between ports and national institutions
• Support to regional bodies, including PMAWCA

For Liberia, the partnership means access to high-level training, security assessments, improved governance mechanisms, and structured technical missions that will improve overall port readiness.

Liberia’s entry into the program is expected to enhance the country’s ability to participate effectively in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Improved security and operational efficiency will position the NPA to handle increased trade volumes and withstand emerging maritime risks.

The initiative also aligns with broader continental security collaborations such as SEACOP, GoGIN, SAFE SEAS, and EnMAR, all geared toward protecting African waters and improving port operations.

PMAWCA has commended Liberia for taking significant steps to strengthen port governance and for demonstrating renewed commitment to professionalism and safety.

Over the next three years, Liberia will work closely with partner ports on audits, joint training sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities—measures expected to accelerate the NPA’s journey toward becoming a competitive and secure maritime hub in the region.

PUBLIC STATEMENT BY MASHAMIE SHERIFF
Valedictorian, Class of 2025 — A. M. E. University

I wish to address a recent and malicious claim published by the “Yekeh Kolubah Blog” on Facebook, alleging that my valedictory speech at A. M. E. University was intended to discuss “religious intolerance” in Liberia. This allegation is entirely false, fabricated, and deliberately misleading.

Let me state this clearly: my prepared speech contained no reference whatsoever to religion or religious matters. It focused solely on academic excellence, service, and the shared experiences of the graduating class. Nothing more.
Moreover, I did not deliver my speech at the ceremony due to time constraints, a fact the University publicly explained following the event. It is therefore dishonest and impossible for anyone to claim knowledge of content that was never presented.

The deliberate spread of lies about “religious intolerance” is not only an attack on my integrity—it is a reckless attempt to stir tension in a country where peace and coexistence are fragile and precious. These kinds of fabrications can fuel unnecessary division, and they must be condemned.

Accordingly, I am calling on the “Yekeh Kolubah Blog” to immediately retract this false statement, delete the misleading post, and issue a public apology for the damage caused.Your fabricated lies have led to a barrage of online harassment, bullying and abuse against me.

I, therefore, encourage the public to disregard this misinformation by the “Yekeh Kolubah blog” and to remain committed to truth, unity, and responsible dialogue.

Signed,
Mashamie Sheriff

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Paynesville, Liberia – November 13, 2025

AREPT Condemns Attack on Staff; Calls It an Assault on the Institution and the Fight Against Corruption

The Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Taskforce (AREPT) strongly condemns the brutal assault on one of its staff members by Mr. Marwolo Jallah, whose company, Zest Group of Business Inc., is currently under active investigation by the Taskforce.

The incident occurred when the staff member went out to officially serve a letter to Mr. Jallah, requesting his appearance as a person of interest in connection with the ongoing investigation. During this process, Mr. Jallah forcibly held the staff member against his will and flogged him, inflicting physical harm in a blatant act of aggression.

The matter has since been reported to the Liberia National Police (LNP), and the suspect is currently in custody of the police at Zone 8 Police Station.

AREPT considers this barbaric act not only a criminal assault on its employee but also a direct attack on the institution and Liberia’s collective fight against corruption. Such conduct represents an attempt to intimidate and obstruct justice, and will not be tolerated under any circumstance.

The Taskforce warns that any individual or entity that seeks to interfere with or obstruct AREPT’s lawful operations will be met with decisive legal action. It further assures the public that it remains resolute, strong, and unwavering in its mission to trace, identify, and recover stolen and suspicious public assets.

AREPT extends its appreciation to the LNP for its prompt response and calls on the public to continue supporting the Taskforce as it upholds the principles of accountability, transparency, and the rule of law in Liberia.

Regional updates….

Guinea's top court has cleared junta leader Mamady Doumbouya to contest the December 28 presidential election, alongside eight lesser-known candidates, AFP reports. Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 coup promising initially to return the country to civilian rule, has now officially entered the race. Out of 51 hopefuls, only nine were approved by the Supreme Court. The election excludes exiled opposition leader and former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo. Doumbouya’s best-known challenger is Faya Lansana Milimono, a vocal critic of the junta.
