The former Secretary General of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) has slammed the Liberia Football Coaches Association (LIFOCA) for its decision to indefinitely suspend Coach Nathaniel S. Sherman, describing the move as procedurally flawed, unprofessional, and lacking due process.

Coach Sherman, who was recently appointed Deputy Technical Director of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), was suspended by LIFOCA following comments he made on social media in response to a Facebook post. In his remarks, Sherman questioned the competency and qualifications of coaches holding License A and B, asserting that none surpassed him in suitability for the position despite his License C status.

Although Sherman later issued a public apology, stating that his comments were not intended to disrespect fellow coaches, LIFOCA rejected the apology and announced a series of sanctions following an Executive Committee meeting held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. The association declared that it would no longer work with Sherman in his role as Deputy Technical Director, would boycott any coaching activity involving him, and suspended his membership indefinitely.

Reacting to the decision, a FIFA-trained journalist and former Secretary General of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL), D. Webster Cassell, faulted LIFOCA for what he described as a failure to follow basic disciplinary and governance standards. According to him, no professional association should impose sanctions without first referring the matter to a disciplinary or Grievance and Ethics Committee for investigation and recommendation.

โ€œHow do you suspend a member indefinitely without due process?โ€ the journalist questioned. โ€œStandard procedure requires that alleged misconduct be investigated by a disciplinary body, after which recommendations are forwarded to the executive or general body for action. None of these fundamental steps were clearly demonstrated.โ€

He further rebuked LIFOCA for failing to cite any specific statutory, or regulatory provision that Shermanโ€™s remarks allegedly violated, noting that branding a statement as โ€œrecklessโ€ or โ€œunprofessionalโ€ without reference to written rules weakens the legitimacy of the decision.

The journalist also raised concerns about transparency, pointing out that LIFOCA did not clearly inform the public whether the decision was reached through a vote, executive action, or a properly constituted disciplinary process. This lack of clarity, he argued, fuels perceptions that the action was sentimental or politically driven, rather than grounded in established governance procedures.

While acknowledging that Shermanโ€™s comments were controversial, the SWAL former SG maintained that the coachโ€™s apology should have been considered a good-faith effort at reconciliation, not grounds for escalation. He warned that rejecting apologies outrightly discourages accountability and dialogue within a professional environment.

The suspension has also raised new criticism of LIFOCAโ€™s leadership, with observers accusing the association of acting prematurely against its members while remaining inconsistent in defending coaches against external pressure, harassment, and professional marginalization.

According to the FIFA-trained journalist, the procedural gaps surrounding the decision could expose LIFOCA to legal challenges should Sherman seek redress under the laws of Liberia. โ€œAuthority without due process is not leadership,โ€ he said. โ€œIt is arbitrariness.โ€

As the debate continues within Liberiaโ€™s football circle, calls are growing for LIFOCA to revisit the decision, clarify its disciplinary framework, and recommit to transparent, rule-based governance that protects both professional standards and the rights of its members.

Information alleging that the LFA boss โ€œevaded justiceโ€ was also dismissed as unfounded and misleading.

Legal analysts further note that under Liberiaโ€™s criminal justice system, an accused person remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. In this matter, the Stateโ€™s decision to discontinue the case underscores the absence of evidentiary grounds required to sustain prosecution. As such, any public portrayal of Mr. Raji as having committed a criminal offense runs contrary to both the law and established principles of fair justice.

While some reports suggested that court sheriffs were unable to execute the writ on Mr. Raji on January 27, 2026, legal luminaries clarified that the inability or delay in executing a writ does not amount to โ€œevasion of justice,โ€ particularly in the absence of any evidence of resistance, obstruction, or deliberate defiance of lawful authority by the accused. Significantly, the matter never advanced to trial.

Contrary to prevailing mischaracterizations, the State subsequently entered a nolle prosequi, a recognized legal instrument under Liberian criminal procedure through which the prosecution formally discontinues a case. Once entered, the action effectively terminates the proceedings unless the State elects to refile, which has not occurred in this instance.

The allegation stemmed from a complaint filed by Bishop Klayee Jubilee FC President James Nimene, who accused Mr. Raji of simple assault and disorderly conduct following an exchange at the LFA headquarters in the Swankamore community. Acting on the complaint, Stipendiary Magistrate William G. Saygah issued a writ of arrest.

Legal minds further indicate that a nolle prosequi does not imply guilt, nor does it substantiate allegations made in a private complaint. Rather, it reflects the Stateโ€™s determination that there was insufficient legal basis or public interest to warrant continued prosecution.

Dr. George Williams Congratulates SWAL on 39th Anniversary,
---Urges Clubs' Presidents

(Monrovia, Liberia), Former Secretary General of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), Dr. George Wah Williams, has extended warmest congratulations to the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) on the occasion of its 39th anniversary, while also urging reforms aimed at strengthening sports development in the country.

In his congratulatory message, Dr. Williams praised successive leaderships of SWAL for their resilience and commitment to sports journalism despite challenges over the years. He described the association as a โ€œcornerstone of the sporting publicโ€™s engagementโ€ in Liberia.

โ€œYour dedication to sports journalism in Liberia has been the cornerstone of the sporting publicโ€™s engagement. With invaluable lessons learned from past turbulence, the future for SWAL looks more promising than ever, as opportunities for greater productivity and impact abound,โ€ Dr. Williams said.

Williams, who worked closely with SWAL during his tenure at the LFA, emphasized that sports writers must not only report news but also play a leading role in educating the public and galvanizing national support for sports undertakings across the country.

As part of his message, Williams also advanced what he termed progressive thoughts for Liberiaโ€™s sporting future*, including changes to the National County Sports Meet (NCSM).

He called for the annual event to be staged biennially instead of yearly, arguing that a two-year gap would allow athletes especially school-going participants, sufficient time to grow and improve, while giving the Ministry of Youth and Sports room to erect or upgrade key sporting facilities in hosting areas.

Williams further recommended that the NSM be restricted strictly to high school athletes**, excluding Division One players in order to prioritize grassroots and school-based talent development.

On football governance, he urged stakeholders of the LFA to encourage club presidents to remain focused on their roles rather than taking on multiple responsibilities, while allowing โ€œinfluential, committed, and objectiveโ€ sports leaders to serve in broader national capacities.

As SWAL marks 39 years of existence, Williams urged the association to remain steadfast in upholding professionalism, fairness, and integrity in sports reporting.

โ€œYour role in shaping the national sports narrative is invaluable, and I look forward to more rewarding collaborations in the future,โ€ he concluded.
