Sand Beach Community Raises Alarm Over Unsafe Mining Activities in Upper Caldwell
Residents of the Sand Beach Community in Upper Caldwell have expressed growing concerns over ongoing sand mining operations being carried out by Malikee Mining Company, a Chinese-owned firm operating near Major Taylor Compound.
Speaking to Blozee TV on Tuesday, several residents voiced fears about the long-term impact of the mining, citing environmental risks, road damage, and increasing threats to their safety and livelihoods. They are urgently calling on the Government of Liberia to intervene before the situation worsens.
A worker at the mining site, who requested anonymity, revealed that the community leadership has allegedly received annual payments from the company, a situation residents believe is preventing the leaders from speaking out on behalf of the community.
“Many people have raised concerns about the dangers, but nothing is done,” the source said. “Because of the money being received from the company, our leaders are silent.”
The source further explained that heavy trucks transporting sand from the site have severely damaged local roads, leaving them nearly impassable in certain areas. “The trucks are too heavy for our roads. Every day, it gets worse,” he added.
Of greater concern is the environmental threat. According to residents, the mining has caused parts of the land to begin splitting, and the community is now facing early signs of erosion. “If this continues, water erosion could destroy homes and land in the coming years,” the worker warned.
The local river, once used for fishing and other daily activities, has also been affected. Residents say it has become dangerously deep due to continuous sand removal, making it unsafe for fishing and posing a threat to children who often play nearby.
In light of these developments, community members are appealing to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ministry of Mines and Energy to urgently investigate the matter and put safety measures in place to protect residents and preserve the environment.
Blozee TV will continue to monitor this developing story and provide further updates.
