Headline: Former Liberian Defense Minister Samukai, receives jail sentence mercy from President George Weah.

Former Liberian Defense Minister and Senator Elect for Lofa County,J Browne Samukai, has received a jail mercy from President George M Weah.
On Tuesday afternoon in Monrovia, to the surprise and dismay of Liberians, particularly Lofaians, President Weah announced the suspension of Browne Samukai 2years jail sentence.
In 2019, the Ex_Defense Minister, along with some Liberians, was convicted for corruption by the Supreme Court of Liberia, something which prevented Samukai certification by the National Elections Commission, since 2020, December Midterm senatorial elections.
Article of the 1986 constitution grants a seated president the authority to pardon any citizen through Presidential clemency for the conviction of a crime.
The Liberian leader decision came with provision that he Samukai works with the Ministry of Justice to enter stipulation for the full settlement of the Armed Forces of Liberia money.
President Weah has at the same time directed the Minister of Finance and Development Planning to make full payment of the outstanding balance of the Armed Forces of Liberia while Mr Samukai goes through the stipulated payment agreement.
However, it unclear wether the president latest action will allow the Unity Party steward, to constitutionally take seat at the Honorable House of the Liberian Senate, barely few days after the leadership of that house wrote a communication to the National Elections Commission informing them about the existence of vacancy for the Senate seat in Lofa County.
But, in a latest development and amid huge criticisms by some Senators on Capitol Hill, the Senate Pro Tempore, Albert Chie, has clarified that his recent communication to NEC was intended to notify that body about the vacancy, but didn't in any other way call on NEC to conduct re election in Lofa.
