Since his inauguration in January 2024, President Joseph Boakai’s administration has faced growing criticism over governance and political decisions that threaten to plunge Liberia back into instability. Recent actions, including the controversial arrest of elected officials, have raised concerns about democratic backsliding, political vendettas, and a return to the oppressive tactics that once defined Liberia’s darkest days. Without urgent corrective measures or international intervention, the country risks descending into chaos, reversing the fragile progress made since the end of its civil wars.
One of the most alarming trends under President Boakai’s leadership is the targeting of political opponents through arrests and prosecutions. The detention of elected officials particularly those linked to the previous government suggests a troubling pattern of using state institutions to settle political scores. While accountability for corruption is necessary, selective justice undermines the rule of law and fuels division. If unchecked, this trend could lead to widespread repression, as seen during past authoritarian regimes.
Liberia’s history is marred by dictatorship, civil conflict, and political persecution. The current government’s heavy handed tactics such as arresting opposition figures risk reviving these dangerous precedents. If political repression intensifies, Liberia could see a resurgence of the kind of authoritarianism that once destabilized the nation, with dire consequences for peace and development.
The international community, including the United Nations, African Union, Ecowas - Cedeao, and key partners like the U.S. and EU must closely monitor Liberia’s situation. Diplomatic pressure, conditional aid, and support for independent judicial processes are essential to prevent democratic erosion. Civil society and media must also be protected to ensure checks on government excesses.
President Boakai’s government is at a crossroads: it can either uphold democratic principles or continue down a path that risks Liberia’s hard-won stability. The arrest of elected officials, economic struggles, and growing authoritarian tendencies are warning signs that must not be ignored. Without urgent reforms and international engagement, Liberia could relapse into the chaos of its past a fate its people cannot afford.
The time to act is now…..
