FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
"Let's Build Facilities Here for Our People"
...President Boakai Urges Liberians As He Officially Launches Rotary Club’s “Ear and Hearing Project" At JFK
Thursday, April 2, 2026
JFK Medical Center, Sinkor, Monrovia: With support from the Rotary Club of Monrovia, the United for Good Rotary and Church Aid Incorporated, His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has officially launched the Rotary Club’s "Ear and Hearing Care Project" at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center.
During the launch, the Rotary Club, through President Boakai, donated over US$ 60,000 worth of hearing aid equipment to the JFK Medical Center to facilitate the treatment of those with hearing deficiency.
The Liberian Leader and Past President of the Rotary Club urged Liberians to emulate the Rotary by contributing to development through building facilities that would make Liberia better for Liberians.
"All efforts should be to build a facility here to improve the Health Sector for the majority of the people,” he averred.
President Boakai asserted that too often in Liberia, when people fall ill, the first instinct is to seek treatment abroad. He noted however that, realistically, not everyone can leave the country. He therefore, stressed that focus must be placed on strengthening Liberia's healthcare system and building facilities that serve the majority of the people. He said this is the reason why his Administration remains committed to the progress of John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center (JFK).
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that, hearing impairment affects about 20% of the global population, roughly 1.5 billion people - making it a significant public health concern.
If urgent action is not taken, projections show that by 2050, one in every four people could be living with hearing loss.
As part of implementing the ARREST Agenda, the Government is taking concrete steps to strengthen specialized healthcare services at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFK), where a full Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) unit once operated uninterrupted from 1972 to 1989.
These renewed interventions are already yielding results, with at least 3,000 patients treated since late 2022. Notably, around 60 percent of these cases involve ear and hearing-related conditions.
The initiative further enhances Government plans to expand screening services from a single room to multiple specialized units, prioritize early detection especially among children whose hearing loss is often acquired—and integrate ear and hearing care into national health policy to ensure sustainable and uninterrupted services.
Meanwhile, President Boakai has expressed his Administration’s pride in the progress being made at the medical facilities across the country, mainly the JFK Medical Center, while at the same time acknowledging the challenges at the hospital.
"I am particularly proud of the improvements at JFK as I recall two individuals once telling me it was their first visit to the hospital, and they were impressed by the level of service they received.
“As we acknowledge that challenges remain, we must continue rebuilding and improving, noting that development does not happen overnight, but through commitment and consistency,” the President implored.
He lauded the Rotary Club for its contribution, describing it as a significant intervention that directly impacts the welfare of our people..
"As a Rotarian myself,”
the President intimated, “I understand the depth of the Club’s impact, especially here in Liberia—even during times of crisis.”
In more Rotary Club news, the Organization has disclosed that it has secured one hundred and two thousand dollars project for the construction of safe water facilities in rural Montserrado county.
