Things to Consider with a Cheap Mic in Cubase 14 Pro
1. Recording Environment

Cheap mics pick up room noise & reflections easily.

Record in a treated space (blankets, curtains, mattress behind mic).

Use a pop filter and mic shield if possible.

2. Mic Position & Distance

Don’t record too close (causes plosives and muddiness).

Don’t record too far (causes thin, weak sound).
πŸ‘‰ Sweet spot: 6–8 inches away with a pop filter.

3. Input Gain (Preamp Level)

Cheap mics can distort quickly.

Set input gain so vocals peak at -12dB to -6dB in Cubase MixConsole.

Avoid recording too hot β€” you can boost later without adding noise.

4. High-Pass Filtering

Cheap mics often capture unwanted rumble.

Use a high-pass filter (80–100Hz) to remove low-frequency mud.

5. EQ Fixing

Some cheap mics sound harsh (around 3–6kHz) or boxy (200–400Hz).

Use Frequency 2 EQ (dynamic mode) to tame these areas.

Boost a little around 10–12kHz for β€œair.”

6. Noise Reduction

Use Gate/Expander in the Channel Strip to cut background noise.

If the mic adds hiss β†’ try SpectralLayers One (built into Cubase) to clean noise.

7. Compression

Cheap mics can sound thin β†’ compression helps add body.

Try Tube Comp or Vintage Compressor in Cubase for warmth.

8. Saturation & Enhancers

Add Magneto II (tape saturation) or a bit of Tube saturation to thicken sound.

This makes cheap mics feel more expensive.

9. Reverb & Delay

Keep reverb subtle β€” cheap mics already exaggerate room tone.

Use short plates/rooms instead of big halls.

10. Double Tracking / Layering

Record doubles (especially for hooks).

Pan slightly left/right β†’ makes the vocal sound fuller and masks mic weaknesses.

Pro Trick for Cheap Mics in Cubase:
Route your vocal through a Group Channel β†’ add EQ, comp, and saturation there. This β€œglues” the sound and makes it more consistent. Follow Cashbeatz the Heavenboi

πŸ”₯ PRO VOCAL PROCESSING CHAIN: FROM RAW TO RADIO READY πŸ”₯

1️⃣ CLEAN UP
● High pass filter 80-100Hz (remove rumble)
● Cut 200-400Hz to reduce muddiness

2️⃣ COMPRESSION
● Use an LA-2A style compressor for smooth leveling
● Control dynamics & keep vocals upfront

3️⃣ DE-ESS
● Tame harsh β€œS” and β€œT” sounds don’t overdo it!

4️⃣ SATURATION
● Add warmth & character (tape/tube emulation)

5️⃣ CLARITY & AIR
● Boost 10kHz+ with tools like Slate Digital’s Fresh Air

6️⃣ DEPTH & SPACE
● Use delay/reverb (e.g., Soundtoys EchoBoy) subtly for width

🎀 REMEMBER: Every voice is different use this as a starting point and trust your ears!

Struggling with noisy vocals from your recording environment?
Here’s a quick fix:

πŸ‘‰ On one channel, load Rvox and NS1.

πŸ”Ή Rvox settings:

Threshold: around -12 dB to -18 dB (adjust to taste)

Gain: +2 dB to +5 dB

Output Gain: keep at 0 dB unless you need a boost

πŸ”Ή NS1 settings:

Keep it subtle, around 20–30% (β‰ˆ -3 dB to -6 dB reduction)
⚠️ Don’t push the k**b too far, or you’ll lose vocal quality.

Try this chain and hear the magic β€” clean, professional vocals even in a noisy space.
