"L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato is a pastoral ode that explores the dichotomy of pensiveness and joy.
It is a stunning work with much of Handel's most beautiful music, and the idea it represents is timeless. In our society, we are frequently encouraged to focus on just one thing, but how Handel's "L'Allegro" remains relevant is that it shucks that notion to the side in favor of moderation, which is somewhere between reflective and joyful. It encourages the idea that one does not need just one or the other but a mix of both. Audiences will love this idea's intellectual exploration through heart-wrenching and exceedingly joyful music.
Handel's music moves me daily because he, like no other composer, can convey such specific emotion through sparse and richly orchestrated arias. His coloratura passages can be exciting or daunting, and his slow-moving arias are ethereal. It is a joy for Curtis to present two Handel operas in two years!"
