OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM END R**E CAMPAIGN- LIBERIA
Date: May 8, 2026
The End R**e Campaign strongly condemns the disturbing incident that occurred yesterday in Red Light, where a group of men publicly assaulted and humiliated a young woman by forcibly removing her clothes due to claims that her dress was half worn.
We categorically state that this act is cruel and degrading, and a gross violation of the woman’s fundamental human rights and dignity. No individual or group has the legal or moral authority to attack, strip, shame, or violently punish another person based on their appearance or mode of dressing.
The actions of these men violate several provisions under Liberian and international human rights laws, including:
1) The right to dignity and personal security guaranteed under the Constitution of Liberia.
2) The right to freedom from cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.
3) The right to bodily integrity and protection against sexual and gender-based violence.
4) The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which protect the dignity and safety of every individual.
We therefore call on the Liberia National Police and all relevant authorities to immediately launch a full investigation into this incident, identify all perpetrators involved, and ensure they are brought to justice in accordance with the laws of Liberia.
We also urge community leaders, religious institutions, youth groups, and civil society organizations to speak out against mob violence, harassment, and the abuse of women in public spaces.
As a campaign committed to ending r**e, sexual violence, and all forms of abuse against women and girls, we stand in solidarity with the victim and reaffirm that no woman deserves violence, humiliation, or assault under any circumstance.
Justice must prevail.
Signed:
