Opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) member and attorney Garmondeh Clinton has called for an impartial approach to Liberia’s ongoing fight against illicit drugs, while accusing the Unity Party-led government of selectively pursuing political opponents.
Clinton made the remarks during an appearance on the Prime FM Morning Drive Show, according to a statement posted following the interview.
He said Liberia’s fight against drugs deserves the support of every citizen because of the threat the crisis poses to the country’s reputation and people.
However, Clinton criticized what he described as an attempt by the government to shield individuals close to the administration while targeting political opponents.
“I was also emphatic about the UP’s government attempt to shield culprits close to the government, while going after political opponents,” Clinton said.
The CDC member also criticized the government’s handling of former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor, particularly over what he described as violations of her civil liberties amid the ongoing narcotics investigation.
Clinton cautioned authorities against using the drug crisis as a justification for targeting political opponents, stressing that the investigation must be conducted fairly and within the confines of Liberia’s laws.
“This fight must be impartial! We cannot trample on our Constitution and laws with an end-justifies-the-means approach,” he said.
He further emphasized that government officials are also subject to the law, declaring: “Even the government is bound by the laws.”
Clinton’s comments come amid heightened political debate over the government’s handling of the country’s major narcotics investigation, particularly following charges against Howard-Taylor and calls from opposition figures for greater transparency and due process.
While supporting the broader fight against drug trafficking, Clinton maintained that the campaign must not compromise constitutional rights or become a tool for political persecution.
