Sheikh said he took Jewel to the meeting with the Cartel.

Sheikh said he was the only person with Jewel at the meeting.

Sheikh said he was the only person present when the Cartel boss introduced himself to Jewel as the kingpin of the biggest co***ne-manufacturing company in the world.

Sheikh said he was the only person present when Jewel asked the co***ne kingpin for US$100 million for the 2023 election.

Sheikh said he was the only person present when the co***ne kingpin promised to give Jewel US$250 million instead of the US$100 million she requested.

Sheikh said he was the only person present when Jewel told the co***ne kingpin that, after George Weah won the presidency, she would kill him after three years.

Sheikh said that, after the meeting, the Cartel boss gave Jewel US$45,000 in cash.

Sheikh said he drove Jewel from the meeting back to the H Hotel and walked her to her room.

Sheikh said that the next day, he picked Jewel up and took her for a ride on the Cartel kingpin’s yacht.

Sheikh said that, recently, in August 2026, the Cartel gave him US$15,000, which he then gave to Jewel as portion of the US$250 million the Cartel promised Jewel when she visited them in Dubai in 2021.

Sheikh said he recorded a conversation with Jewel and voluntarily turned the recording over to the police.

MONROVIA — A senior investigator with the Liberia National Police has testified that an alleged transnational co***ne trafficking network sought political protection from former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor and allegedly discussed a plot to assassinate former President George Manneh Weah.

Repheal Wilson, Acting Commissioner of the Liberia National Police Crime Services Division, made the allegations on Friday while testifying as the prosecution's first witness during Howard-Taylor's preliminary examination at the Monrovia City Court.

However, the allegations presented in Wilson's testimony have not yet been tested through cross-examination, and prosecutors have not publicly produced all of the underlying evidence in court. No court has made a finding establishing the truth of the allegations, while Howard-Taylor and her co-defendants have denied wrongdoing.

Wilson told the court that investigators documented meetings involving Howard-Taylor during her time as Vice President between 2018 and 2024. According to his testimony, members of the alleged criminal organization sought access to her because of the influential position she held in government.

The senior police investigator further testified that investigators uncovered discussions concerning an alleged plot to assassinate then-President George Weah. Prosecutors, however, have not yet presented evidence supporting that particular allegation before the court.

Wilson said he supervised investigations into what prosecutors describe as an international trafficking organization operating across Liberia, Dubai, Nigeria and other jurisdictions between 2021 and 2024.

According to him, investigators established connections between Liberian and foreign nationals who allegedly met in Dubai before traveling to Liberia to establish operations that investigators say extended beyond legitimate business activities.

The alleged organization, Wilson testified, sought access to senior government officials who could provide protection and shield its activities from law enforcement.

Investigators reportedly deployed covert recording equipment during several meetings and obtained videos that prosecutors say captured discussions involving co***ne trafficking, financial transactions and attempts to secure official protection.

Wilson told the court that one of the foreign nationals, identified as Nicholas, allegedly informed Liberian contacts that the organization was involved in co***ne trafficking and wanted Liberia included in its international drug distribution network.

According to Wilson, members of the alleged organization again sought political protection to facilitate those activities.

The investigator also referred to approximately US$250 million allegedly connected to the broader operation. However, he did not explain in court how investigators arrived at that figure or present evidence directly linking the money to any of the defendants.

Wilson said the investigation continued following the change of government, during which investigators allegedly identified additional individuals connected to the organization.

The prosecution's position is that the case involves a long-running international criminal enterprise rather than a single co***ne shipment.

Defense lawyers are expected to challenge both the credibility of the investigation and the prosecution's interpretation of the evidence.

The preliminary examination continues before Stipendiary Magistrate L. Ben Barco, who will determine whether prosecutors have established sufficient probable cause to forward the case to the Criminal Court for trial.

Probable cause represents a significantly lower legal standard than proof beyond a reasonable doubt, which prosecutors would be required to meet during a full trial. At that stage, the state would have to establish the existence of the alleged criminal network, prove that recordings and other evidence are authentic and legally admissible, and demonstrate that each defendant knowingly participated in the offenses charged.

MINISTRY OF PUBLIC WORKS CLARIFIES OWNERSHIP OF THE JAPAN FREEWAY EXTENSION PROJECT AND CONDEMNS HARASSMENT OF FREELANCE CONTENT CREATOR

Monrovia, Liberia

The Ministry of Public Works has taken note of a disturbing incident that occurred at the construction site of the Japan Freeway extension project spanning Freeport to Gabriel Tucker Bridge, which is powered by a grant from the people and Government of Japan to the people and Government of Liberia.

The Ministry has been reliably informed that some construction workers allegedly harassed a freelance content creator who had gone to the project site to livestream the ongoing road works for public viewing. The Ministry considers the conduct reported in this incident a matter of serious concern, particularly the alleged attempt to prevent a citizen from documenting and sharing information about a public infrastructure project.

Construction workers have the singular responsibility to work in accordance with their contractual obligations and not determine, by any measure whatsoever, the eligibility of who should document ongoing public projects.

The Ministry further stresses that employees or representatives of contractors working on government-funded or government-led infrastructure projects are expected to conduct themselves professionally and respectfully, particularly when interacting with members of the public.

The Ministry of Public Works wishes to make its position unequivocally clear that it will neither participate in, endorse, nor support any action that seeks to violate the rights of ordinary Liberian citizens, as it recognizes the legitimate interest of citizens, journalists, media practitioners, and freelance content creators in observing and reporting on public infrastructure projects, subject to applicable laws, legitimate safety requirements, and reasonable site-access protocols.

While the Ministry expects everyone entering an active construction site to respect safety instructions and the operational requirements of contractors, such considerations must not become a pretext for intimidation, harassment, threats, or the unlawful suppression of citizens' rights.

The Ministry therefore urges all contractors and their employees working on public projects to exercise restraint, professionalism, and respect in their engagements with members of the public.

Toward this end, the Ministry of Public Works remains committed to transparency, accountability, public access to information, and respect for the rights and dignity of every Liberian citizen.

Hence, any disagreement arising from activities at a project site should be handled through appropriate professional and institutional channels, not through intimidation or hostility toward members of the public as was seen in the supra referencd content.

The Ministry will continue to work with its contractors to ensure that public infrastructure projects are implemented efficiently while upholding the principles of responsible public service and respect for citizens' rights.

Former Unity Party Chairman Chelle Noring Dismisses Sam Jackson’s Claims, Says Party Was Never Sold to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

MONROVIA, Liberia — Former Unity Party National Chairman Chelle Noring has strongly rejected claims allegedly made by economist Sam Jackson that former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and others bought the Unity Party.

Speaking during a podcast interview, Noring described the allegation as a “blatant lie,” insisting that the Unity Party was never sold to anyone and that its original members voluntarily supported and brought Ellen Johnson Sirleaf into the party because they believed she had the popularity and political support needed to strengthen the institution.

Noring who is one of the founding fathers of the Unity Party since its establishment in 1984, recalled his long history with the party and his involvement in efforts that eventually led to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf becoming its presidential candidate.

“I was 28 years old when the Unity Party was founded in 1984, and I am still with my party,” Noring said.

According to him, the Unity Party participated in political alliance discussions at a time when several other political parties had already presented candidates. However, he said the Unity Party was among the parties that did not initially take a candidate into the alliance convention.

Noring explained that several individuals had expressed interest in leading the party, but the party’s leadership eventually agreed to support Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

He said the decision was influenced by the large number of supporters Ellen Johnson Sirleaf had at the time.
“We saw the multitude behind this woman,” Noring explained. “We said, ‘Let this lady lead our party and our party will become great.’”
Noring rejected perceptions that money changed hands in exchange for control of the Unity Party.

He recalled hearing allegations after arriving in the United States in 2001 that Johnson Sirleaf had allegedly paid him and other party members millions of dollars to purchase the party.

“People told me that they heard Ellen gave me US$3.5 million because we sold the party to her,” Noring said. “I laughed because that was a lie.”
He maintained that the original members supported Johnson Sirleaf because they wanted to ensure the survival and growth of the Unity Party, particularly following a period when several members had left the organization.

Noring also questioned Sam Jackson’s alleged assertion that he was present when the Unity Party was purchased, asking who exactly the supposed sellers were.

“Sam Jackson is lying,” Noring declared. “We never sold the Unity Party to anybody.”
The former chairman further argued that several members and supporters made significant personal sacrifices to sustain the party and support its political activities.

He specifically recalled that some party members contributed their personal resources, including spending money to accommodate and support party activities during difficult periods.
According to Noring, these sacrifices demonstrated that the party was being preserved and developed by committed members rather than being sold to any individual.

Responding directly to Jackson's comments, Noring accused Jackson of spreading misinformation and described his statements about the Unity Party as inaccurate.
“To cut the long matter short, Sam Jackson is lying,” Noring said, maintaining that there was never any transaction in which Ellen Johnson Sirleaf bought the Unity Party.

Noring also expressed disappointment over what he described as the treatment of some original Unity Party members who played significant roles in building the party and supporting Johnson Sirleaf's political rise.
He said many of the individuals who fought to establish and sustain the Unity Party during its early years have since been overlooked.

The former chairman concluded by reiterating that the Unity Party's decision to embrace Johnson Sirleaf was based on political calculations and the belief that her popularity would help strengthen the party—not because she purchased it.

The claims and counterclaims surrounding the history of the Unity Party reflect continuing disagreements among some former and current political actors over the party's past leadership and political evolution.
