On Saturday, March 7, 2026, several armed robbers attacked some residents of the Paynesville, Peace Community on the outskirts of Monrovia, killing a man and injuring his fiancée.

Matina Tokpa, a victim who was shot twice in the left arm by the assailants, explained that she was recently involved in an accident and has been sick, adding, “on the night of the attack, at 3am, the armed robbers’ temple with their Liberia Electricity connection”.

“The lights kept going off and on, and my fiancé said we should get out before the room catches fire,” she said. According to Martina, the moment both of them stepped out, the robbers attacked her fiancé and began shooting.

Martina asserted that she got hit twice by bullets from the assailants and later rolled into nearby drainage, pointing out, ‘the attackers shot and killed her fiancé”.

‎“Some people personally texted me in my inbox and threatened that I cannot come to Nimba because of my critical stance against the government. I saw that as a political joke. I saw that as child’s play. I was not deterred by that. Liberia belongs to all of us.

‎I am not coming to the county in hiding; I came here in broad daylight. I just held a meeting in broad daylight. I am here and on my way to Yekepa. So, nobody can stop me from coming to Nimba County. Absolutely nobody.”
